Gastrointestinal colonization with carbapenem-resistant (CRE) is always a prerequisite for the development of translocated infections. Here, we sought to screen for fecal carriage of CRE and identify the risk factors for CRE colonization as well as subsequent translocated pneumonia in critically ill patients admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) of a university hospital in China. We further focused on the intestinal flora composition and fecal metabolic profiles in CRE rectal colonization and translocated infection patients.

Purpose: Abdominal hernia (AH) is one of the most common clinical diseases. A large number of observational studies have found that obesity is an important risk factor for AH. However, the causal relationship between obesity and AH cannot be determined because of the clinical studies on AH induced by obesity are relatively few and only have some small- or medium-scale observational studies.

Aging results in progressive decline of renal function as well as histological alterations including glomerulosclerosis and interstitial fibrosis. The objective of current study was to test the benefits of moderate swimming exercise in aged rats on renal function and structure and investigate its molecular mechanisms. Aged rats of 21-months old were given moderate swimming exercise for 12 weeks.

Keratitis-ichthyosis-deafness (KID) syndrome has genetic heterogeneity, and the clinical manifestations of some patients may overlap with Clouston syndrome. A 34-year-old female patient came to our department with a complain of "sparse hair, rough skin, photophobia and deafness for more than 30 years." We found that the proband and two other family members (57-year-old mother and 4-year-old daughter) had similar clinical manifestations: systemic hair loss, generalized skin hyperkeratosis, especially in the metacarpophalangeal area.

Background: Sarcopenia is defined as an age-related progressive loss of muscle mass and/or strength. Although different factors can contribute to this disease, the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. We assessed transcriptional heterogeneity in skeletal muscles from sarcopenic and control mice at single-cell resolution.

Autophagy is an evolutionally conserved degradation mechanism for maintaining cell homeostasis whereby cytoplasmic components are wrapped in autophagosomes and subsequently delivered to lysosomes for degradation. This process requires the concerted actions of multiple autophagy-related proteins and accessory regulators. In neurons, autophagy is dynamically regulated in different compartments including soma, axons, and dendrites.

Background: College freshmen tend to have more psychological and behavioral problems compared with other populations, especially depressive symptoms. Perceived parental control has been proved to play a significant role in mental health among children and adolescents. Based on the theoretical and empirical research of chronotype and sleep quality, this study constructed a chain mediating model to examine whether they mediated the relationship between parental control and depressive symptoms among Chinese college freshmen.

Transcatheter arterial embolization (TAE) is a widely used technique in treating hepatic carcinoma but may cause liver injury in some cases. This study investigated the hepatoprotective effect of the preprocessed peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-α (PPAR-α) agonist-WY-14643 following TAE. A total of 60 rabbit liver cancer models were developed and divided into a combined treatment (WY-14643 and TAE), TAE, and control groups.

To investigate the expression levels and clinical significance of collagen typeⅠ α1 chain (COL1A1) and collagen type Ⅰ α2 chain (COL1A2) in malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) tissues. In January 2020, MPM tissues and adjacent normal pleural tissues were collected from 26 MPM patients, and the expression levels of COL1A1 and COL1A2 genes in the tissues were determined by quantitative reverse transcription PCR, and the efficacy of both levels in diagnosing MPM was assessed using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves. The relationship between COL1A1 and COL1A2 gene expression and clinicopathological features was analyzed by the Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) database, and the relationship between the expression levels of both and overall survival (OS) and disease-free progression survival (DFS) of MPM patients was dynamically analyzed by gene expression profiling, and the factors affecting the prognosis of MPM patients were explored by Cox proportional risk regression model.

Department of Spine Surgery, The First Affiliated Hospital of Dali University, China.
An injury to the spinal cord results in a crucial central nervous system event that further causes irreversible impairment or loss of motor, autonomic, and sensory functions. A progressive pathophysiological cascade following spinal cord injury (SCI) includes ischemia/reperfusion injury, oxidative stress, proapoptotic signaling, peripheral inflammatory cell infiltration, and glutamate-mediated excitotoxicity, and regulated cell death. These complex pathological and physiological changes continue to cause cell injury over the long-term and severely limit the efficacy of clinical treatment strategies in restoring the injured nervous system.

Solitary fibrous tumors/hemangiopericytomas (SFTs/HPCs) are intracranial spindle cell tumors that originate from interstitial tissue. SFTs/HPCs that are primary malignant intracranial tumors are exceedingly uncommon. A case of intracranial malignant SFT/HPC that originated intracranially and spread to the pulmonary region is described herein.

Background: Porphyria cutanea tarda (PCT) is a kind of porphyria, which is a rare metabolic disorder with skin damage as a manifestation. The disease is mainly caused by an inherited or acquired deficiency of uroporphyrinogen decarboxylase, the fifth enzyme in heme synthesis. It is manifested primarily in patients with elevated skin fragility and greater sensitivity to sunlight.

Intervertebral disc degeneration (IDD) is widely accepted as a cause of low back pain and related degenerative musculoskeletal disorders. Nucleus pulposus (NP) cell loss is closely related to IDD progression. Thus, investigating the specifically targeted therapeutic agents against NP cell loss depends on understanding the molecular mechanisms.
