Purpose: To investigate the expression of interleukin-6 (IL-6) and β-catenin in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) and its clinicopathological significance.

Methods: The serum IL-6 concentration in 110 OSCC patients and 109 healthy controls were determined by chemiluminescence analysis. IL-6 and β-catenin expression levels in 68 tumor specimens of OSCC patients undergoing surgical treatment and 6 normal mucosal tissues were determined by immunohistochemistry method.

Multifunctional nanoplatforms with diagnostic-imaging and targeted therapeutic functionality (theranostics) are of great interest in the field of precision nanomedicine. The emerging sonodynamic therapy (SDT) combined with sonosensitizers under the guidance of photoacoustic (PA) imaging is highly expected to accurately eliminate cancer cells/tissue. Unique core/shell-structured theranostic FA-HMME-MNPs-PLGA nanoparticles (FHMP NPs, FA: folate, HMME: hematoporphyrin monomethyl ether, MNPs: melanin nanoparticles, PLGA: poly (lactic-co-glycolic) acid) were constructed by the integration of MNPs (for PA imaging) in the core and HMME in the shell for enhanced PA imaging-guided SDT, which were further functionalized with a tumor-targeting ligand, FA.

Therapeutic nanocatalysis has emerged as an intriguing strategy for efficient cancer-specific therapy, but the traditional inorganic nanocatalysts suffer from low catalytic efficiency and difficulty in biodegradation, hindering their further clinical translation. Herein, a tumor microenvironment-triggered, biodegradable and biocompatible nanocatalyst employing 2D hydroxide nanosheet is presented, and is shown to have high catalytic capacity to efficiently produce abundant hydroxyl radicals under the tumor microenvironment and consequently kill tumor cells selectively. A polyethylene glycol (PEG)-conjugated Fe-containing hydroxide nanosheet is successfully constructed via a facile but efficient bottom-up approach that concurrently realizes nanosheet synthesis and PEGylation.

Phototherapy has emerged as a novel therapeutic modality for cancer treatment, but its low therapeutic efficacy severely hinders further extensive clinical translation and application. This study reports amplifying the phototherapeutic efficacy by constructing a near-infrared (NIR)-responsive multifunctional nanoplatform for synergistic cancer phototherapy by a single NIR irradiation, which can concurrently achieve mitochondria-targeting phototherapy, synergistic photothermal therapy (PTT)/photodynamic therapy (PDT), self-sufficient oxygen-augmented PDT, and multiple-imaging guidance/monitoring. Perfluorooctyl bromide based nanoliposomes are constructed for oxygen delivery into tumors, performing the functions of red blood cells (RBCs) for oxygen delivery ("Nano-RBC" nanosystem), which can alleviate the tumor hypoxia and enhance the PDT efficacy.
