Cancer photo-immunotherapy: from bench to bedside.

Theranostics

August 2021

School of Biomedical Engineering, Hainan University, Haikou, 570228, China.

Targeted therapy and immunotherapy in combination is considered the ideal strategy for treating metastatic cancer, as it can eliminate the primary tumors and induce host immunity to control distant metastases. Phototherapy, a promising targeted therapy, eradicates primary tumors using an appropriate dosage of focal light irradiation, while initiating antitumor immune responses through induced immunogenic tumor cell death. Recently, phototherapy has been employed to improve the efficacy of immunotherapies such as chimeric antigen receptor T-cell therapy and immune checkpoint inhibitors.

Hypoxia-inducible factor 1α (HIF1α) activation is profoundly implicated in the initiation and progression of multiple malignant tumors. Prolyl 4-hydroxylase subunit alpha 1 (P4HA1) is the active catalytic component of prolyl 4-hydroxylase and has been reported to promote tumor progression in several cancers. In this study, we revealed that P4HA1 was highly expressed in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) and predicted a poor clinical outcome.

J Trauma Acute Care Surg

December 2018

From the Department of Burns and Plastic Surgery (D.L., Y.S., C.S., L.L., D.Z., L.M.), the First Affiliated Hospital of Chinese PLA General Hospital, Beijing, China; Anesthesia, Critical Care and Pain Medicine (L.M.), Massachusetts General Hospital and Shriners Burns Hospital-Boston; and Burn Unit, Department of Surgery (Y.Y.), Massachusetts General Hospital and Shriners Burns Hospital-Boston, Boston, Massachusetts.

Background: It has been established that glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP 1) inhibits pancreatic β-cell apoptosis, increases insulin secretion, and improves glucose tolerance in scald injury. However, the effects of Exendin-4, a long-acting incretin similar to GLP 1, remained unclear in severe scald injury. Hence, this study attempted to investigate whether Exendin-4 had similar effects by protecting the histology of pancreas in severely scalded rats.

Purpose: A shortage of human corneal endothelial cells (HCEC) for transplant and current methods of differentiation induction require chemical compounds, which might cast further influences after differentiation induction. Therefore, we developed a simple and straightforward approach to endothelial cell differentiation from human embryonic stem cells (hESC).

Methods: HESC are used to differentiate into HCEC by employing a two-stage method, which involves the application of two different types of conditioned culture medium, human corneal stromal cell-conditioned medium (HCSC-CM) and lens epithelial cell (LEC) plus HCSC-CM (LEC-CM+HCEC-CM).

Nicotine exposure impairs germ cell development in human fetal ovaries cultured .

Aging (Albany NY)

July 2018

College of Life Sciences, Institute of Reproductive Sciences, Qingdao Agricultural University, Qingdao 266109, China.

In the present paper, we found that human fetal ovaries (at ~16 weeks) express the transcripts for several subunits of the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (nAChR). Exposure to the drug resulted in the marked increase of apoptosis in the ovaries in a time and dose-dependent manner. Evidence that adverse nicotine effects are potentially due to an increased level of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and consequent DNA damage, both in the ovarian somatic cells and germ cells, are reported.
