Previous studies have demonstrated a correlation between dietary salt intake and stroke; however, there was a lack of conclusive evidence regarding a causal connection between them. We undertook a two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) study to examine their potential association. The genome-wide data for dietary salt intake was sourced from genome-wide association study that involved 462,630 samples.

Introduction: Diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN), a prevalent complication among individuals diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, has a significant impact on both the well-being of patients and their financial situation. Acupuncture has been employed for thousands of years within China and is regarded as one of the primary characteristic therapies of traditional Chinese medicine. Research has indicated that acupuncture has the potential to enhance microcirculation, decrease the generation of free radicals, and augment nerve conduction velocity.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to explore how Naochuxue prescription (NCXP) protects the brain in rats that experienced intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH).
  • Researchers injected rats with collagenase to create an ICH model and treated them with different doses of NCXP while assessing their neurological function and inflammation levels.
  • Results indicated that NCXP improved neurological outcomes and reduced inflammation by lowering certain protein expressions, though more research is needed to fully understand the mechanisms involved.

Article Synopsis
  • The research investigates the connection between sleep duration and the onset of arthritis in middle-aged and older adults, focusing on a 7-year study using data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study.
  • It found that individuals who developed new-onset arthritis reported significantly shorter median sleep durations compared to those without arthritis, highlighting a negative correlation where longer sleep was associated with reduced risk of arthritis.
  • The study also identified BMI as a potential modifier in this relationship, suggesting that improving sleep duration could be beneficial for reducing susceptibility to arthritis.

This study retrospectively analyzed the clinical efficacy of Uncut Roux-en-Y and Billroth II anastomoses in gastrointestinal reconstruction following laparoscopic D2 radical gastrectomy for distal gastric cancer. The primary objective was to compare the postoperative outcomes, including quality of life and complication rates, between the 2 surgical techniques. One hundred patients diagnosed with distal gastric cancer were enrolled between June 2020 and May 2023.

Background: Epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) plays a key role in tubulointerstitial fibrosis, which is a hallmark of diabetic kidney disease (DKD). Our previous studies showed that CRTC2 can simultaneously regulate glucose metabolism and lipid metabolism. However, it is still unclear whether CRTC2 participates in the EMT process in DKD.

Timely treatment of viral myocarditis (VMC), a form of cardiac inflammation caused by viral infections, can reduce the occurrence of dilated cardiomyopathy and sudden death. Our previous study demonstrated the anti-inflammatory and anti-fibrotic effects of KX, a combination of alkaloids and saponins, on an autoimmune myocarditis model . The present study explored the effects of KX on coxsackievirus B3 (CVB3)-induced acute VMC in mice.

Ferroptosis is characterized by the accumulation of iron and lipid peroxidation products, which regulates physiological and pathological processes in numerous organs and tissues. A growing body of research suggests that ferroptosis is a key causative factor in a variety of skeletal muscle diseases, including sarcopenia, rhabdomyolysis, rhabdomyosarcoma, and exhaustive exercise-induced fatigue. However, the relationship between ferroptosis and various skeletal muscle diseases has not been investigated systematically.

Gut Microbiota: Therapeutic Targets of Ginseng Against Multiple Disorders and Ginsenoside Transformation.

Front Cell Infect Microbiol

May 2022

Jilin Ginseng Academy, Key Laboratory of Active Substances and Biological Mechanisms of Ginseng Efficacy, Ministry of Education, Jilin Provincial Key Laboratory of Bio-Macromolecules of Chinese Medicine, Changchun University of Chinese Medicine, Changchun, China.

Panax ginseng, as the king of Chinese herb, has significant therapeutic effects on obesity, type 2 diabetes mellitus, fatty liver disease, colitis, diarrhea, and many other diseases. This review systematically summarized recent findings, which show that ginseng plays its role by regulating gut microbiota diversity, and gut microbiota could also regulate the transformation of ginsenosides. We conclude the characteristics of ginseng in regulating gut microbiota, as the potential targets to prevent and treat metabolic diseases, colitis, neurological diseases, cancer, and other diseases.

Nutrition intervention has become a potential strategy to improve healthspan and prolong lifespan. Ginseng has been used for thousands of years and developed as a functional food to provide various protective effects to humans. An extract of total ginsenosides (TGS), a mixture of the main active ginsenosides from ginseng, has wide biological activities and health benefits for age-related diseases, including antioxidation and improvements in mitochondrial function.

Department of Medicinal Chemistry, School of Pharmaceutical Engineering and Life Science, Changzhou University, Changzhou, Jiangsu 213164, China. Electronic address:

The natural calcitonin (CT) receptor and its peptide agonists are considered validated targets for drug discovery. A small molecule agonist, SUN-B8155, has previously been shown to efficiently activate cellular CTR. Herein, we report the synthesis of a series of compounds (S8155 1-9) derived from SUN-B8155, and investigate the structural-functional relationship, bias properties and their cellular activity profile.

The increased worldwide mortality rate due to liver cancer may be attributed to the aggressive nature of the disease. Signal transduction through G-protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) can affect a number of aspects of cancer biology, including invasion, migration and vascular remodelling. JTC-801, a novel GPCR antagonist, has demonstrated promising anticancer effects in adenocarcinoma and osteosarcoma cells.

The present study was designed to investigate the effects of pilose antler peptide (PAP) on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced lung injury. BalB/c mice intraperitoneally received PAP (10 and 20 mg/kg) or dexamethasone (2 mg/kg) 1 h prior to intratracheal instillation of LPS. PAP significantly decreased lung wet-to-dry weight (W/D) ratio and lung myeloperoxidase (MPO) activity and restored LPS-induced lung histopathological changes.

Epidermal growth factor (EGF)/EFG receptor (EGFR) signaling plays an important role in the osteoblastogenesis. The potential effects of pilose antler peptide (PAP) on osteoblast cell damages was investigated in our present study through EGF/EGFR signaling. In MC3T3-E1 osteoblastic cells, PAP treatment significantly inhibited the production of inflammatory cytokines by decreasing the levels of serum proinflammatory cytokines interleukin-1β (IL-1β), interleukin-6 (IL-6) and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α).
