Appropriate mechanical support and excellent osteogenic capability are two essential prerequisites of customized implants for regenerating large-sized cranial bone defect. Although porous bone scaffolds have been widely proven to promote bone regeneration, their weak mechanical properties limit the clinical applications in cranioplasty. Herein, we applied two previously developed mineralized collagen-based bone scaffolds (MC), porous MC (MC) and compact MC (MC) to construct a biphasic MC composite bone scaffold (MC) to repair the large-sized cranial bone defect in developing sheep.

Large-sized cranial bone defect repair presents a great challenge in the clinic. The ideal cranioplasty materials to realize the functional and cosmetic recovery of the defect must have sufficient mechanical support, excellent biocompatibility, good osseointegration and biodegradability as well. In this study, a high-strength mineralized collagen (MC) bone scaffold was developed with biomimetic composition, microstructure and mechanical properties for the repair of sheep large-sized cranial bone defects in comparison with two traditional cranioplasty materials, polymethyl methacrylate and titanium mesh.

Cranial bone defects remain a great challenging problem in clinical settings, the influences of which are serious because of the intricate complications and related social problems, especially for young children with rapidly growing skulls. Currently, an increasing number of bone materials are being developed for cranial bone defects repair. In this study, two different biodegradable composite bone materials based on mineralized collagen (MC), with compact/porous structure, were constructed to promote bone regeneration for large cranial bone defect repair of one-month-old baby sheep.

We aimed to assess the correlation between docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) dietary intake and the plasma, erythrocyte and breast milk DHA concentrations in lactating women residing in the coastland, lakeland and inland areas of China. A total of 408 healthy lactating women (42 ± 7 days postpartum) were recruited from four hospitals located in Weihai (coastland), Yueyang (lakeland) and Baotou (inland) city. The categories of food containing DHA, the average amount consumed per time and the frequency of consumption in the past month were assessed by a tailored DHA food frequency questionnaire, the DHA Intake Evaluation Tool (DIET).

Few studies have examined docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) in pregnant and lactating women in developing countries like China, where DHA-enriched supplements are increasingly popular. We aimed to assess the DHA status among Chinese pregnant and lactating women residing areas differing in the availability of aquatic products. In total, 1211 women in mid-pregnancy (17 ± 2 weeks), late pregnancy (39 ± 2 weeks), or lactation (42 ± 7 days) were enrolled from Weihai (coastland), Yueyang (lakeland), and Baotou (inland) city, with approximately 135 women in each participant group by region.

Aim: To evaluate use of a titanium mesh to fill cranial defects in growing animals, as a model for juvenile humans.
Material And Methods: Thirty two-month-old Seghers pigs were evenly assigned to one of three groups: controls, a defect group (unrepaired 5 x 5 cm lesion), and a repair group (repaired 5 x 5 cm lesions). Histological evaluations and morphological measurements were conducted to compare the groups.
