Cellular senescence is an irreversible state of growth arrest, and induction of senescence is considered a potential therapeutic strategy against cancer. Indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase 1 (IDO1), an enzyme catabolizing L-tryptophan into kynurenine, plays a key role in tumor immune tolerance. However, the roles of IDO1 in cellular senescence and chemoresistance remain elusive.

Article Synopsis
  • This study explored how n-butanol extract of Pulsatilla Decoction (BEPD) can protect vaginal epithelial cells from damage caused by Candida glabrata through the EGFR/MAPK signaling pathway.
  • The research involved creating a vulvovaginal candidiasis (VVC) mouse model and analyzing gene expression differences using transcriptomics, comparing control, VVC model, and BEPD-treated groups.
  • Various in vitro experiments assessed the effects of BEPD-containing serum and fluconazole, measuring cell apoptosis and key protein expressions related to inflammation and cell survival to understand the protective mechanisms of BEPD.

Wound management remains a challenge in clinical practice. Nowadays, patients have an increasing demand for wound repair with enhanced speed and quality; therefore, there is a great need to seek therapeutic strategies that can promote rapid and effective wound healing. In this study, we developed a carboxymethyl cellulose hydrogel loaded with l-carnosine (CRN@hydrogel) for potential application as a wound dressing.

Article Synopsis
  • HORMAD1 is a cancer/testis antigen that has been found to be significantly upregulated in gastric cancer, correlating with poor prognosis.
  • Research showed that HORMAD1 influences cancer cell growth and invasion by affecting the NF-κB signaling pathway and promoting the epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT).
  • HORMAD1 may serve as a valuable prognostic biomarker and potential therapeutic target for gastric cancer treatment.

Background: Tracheotomy decannulation is critical for patients in the intensive care unit (ICU) to recover. In this study, we developed and validated an intuitive nomogram to predict the success rate of tracheotomy decannulation.

Methods: We collected the data of 627 ICU patients before open tracheotomy decannulation from two medical institutions, including 466 patients (135 success and 331 failure) from the First Affiliated Hospital of Anhui Medical University as a training cohort, and 161 patients (57 success and 104 failure) from the Second Affiliated Hospital of Anhui Medical University as an external validation cohort.

Objective: We aim to improve the decision-making process of nursing evaluation, and the purpose of this paper was to introduce nursing outcome classifications based on standardized nursing language, as well as build a comprehensive nursing evaluation decision-making system model based on an artificial neural network and fuzzy comprehensive evaluations.

Methods: Based on the principle and method of the decision support system (DSS), this paper proposed a framework of DSS and developed an intelligent nursing decision support system which integrates expert systems, data, models and knowledge.

Results: Taking cancer patients as examples, based on the analysis and comparison of cancer stressors and their frequency of occurrence, this paper found that the 5 major factors for cancer patients' stress events were lack of privacy, attitude of the medical workers, unfamiliar medical workers and uncomfortable temperature in wards.

Background: Chronic HBV infection is a serious worldwide health problem that mainly causes liver cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Few studies have explored how T cell exhaustion helps HBV avoid immune system attack and how to reverse that exhaustion. Recently, T cell immunoglobulin and immune receptor tyrosine-based inhibitory motif (ITIM) domain (TIGIT) have been identified as coinhibitory receptors, similar to PD-1.

Background: Astaxanthin (ATX) is a carotenoid pigment with effective antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antitumor and immunomodulatory actions. ATX has been proposed to exert neuroprotective effects and attenuate oxidative stress in mice after traumatic brain injury (TBI). The nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2)-heme oxygenase 1 (HO-1) signaling pathway is stimulated after TBI and activates a compensatory mechanism against TBI.
