Breast Cancer stem cells (BCSCs) have been extensively studied and have been used directly as a therapeutic target, but how the BCSCs themselves are regulated remain unclear. Here we reported identification of miR-205 that may act as a tumor suppressor and negatively-regulate BCSCs stemness and tumor malignance. By qRT-PCR analysis, we have shown that miR-205 was decreased in CD44/CD24 BCSCs compared with non-BCSCs.

Runx2, a master regulator of osteogenesis, is abnormally expressed in advanced breast cancer. Here we addressed Runx2 contribution to breast cancer cell growth and metastasis. We found that CD44 and Runx2 were both elevated in breast cancer tissues compared with the adjacent normal tissues in breast cancer patients.

Age-related cataract patients regularly have hypertension, hyperglycemia, and hyperlipidemia. In oxidative conditions, increased reactive oxygen species can oxidize natural low-density lipoprotein into oxidative low-density lipoprotein (oxLDL). However, the relationship between oxLDL and the occurrence of cataracts is still unclear.

The purpose of the present study was to enhance understanding of the molecular mechanisms underpinning head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). Microarray datasets were obtained from the gene expression omnibus database. By a bioinformatics method, 109 differentially expressed genes were identified between the two mRNA datasets, and these genes were classified primarily into biological process, molecular function, or cellular component.

Background Previous studies reported that early-life exposure to undernutrition is associated with the risk of diabetes mellitus and metabolic syndrome in adulthood, but the association with risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) later in life remains unclear. The current study aimed to investigate whether exposure to Chinese famine in early life is associated with risk of CVD. Methods and Results We used data from REACTION (Risk Evaluation of Cancers in Chinese Diabetic Individuals: A Longitudinal Study), which recruited a total of 259 657 community-dwelling adults aged 40 years or older from 25 centers across mainland China between 2011 and 2012.

To investigate the association between plasma omentin-1 levels and the risk of colorectal cancer (CRC) and the pathological changes of CRC, a total of 358 colorectal adenocarcinoma patients were included in the experience group, and 286 people were included in the control group. Their levels of omentin-1, adiponectin, visfatin, leptin, and their anthropometric and metabolic parameters were determined, and we analyzed the tertile distributions in the control group, according to the different levels: low, medium, and high. The results showed that the omentin-1 levels in patients with CRC were higher than the levels in the controls [(67.

To investigate the chemotherapy-induced emotion regulation impairment and its neural correlates in breast cancer (BC) patients by event-related potentials (ERP), seventeen BC patients were investigated on emotion regulation paradigms while undergoing the recording of an event-related potential (ERP) both before and after chemotherapy. The performance of behavioral and ERP was compared for the data collected before and after chemotherapy (BCB and BCA, respectively). The correlation of the difference between the peak and the latency of each component before and after chemotherapy were compared with the difference in behavior (RT and AR).

The aim of this study was to investigate the associations between HSP90B1 gene polymorphisms and the efficacy of glucocorticoids (GCs) and the improvement of health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in Anhui patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). A total of 305 patients with SLE were recruited to the study. These patients were treated with GCs for 12 weeks and classified into two groups (sensitivity and insensitivity) according to the response to GCs measured by the scores on SLE disease activity index (SLEDAI).

Laryngeal carcinoma is a serious, life-threatening disease. Tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α), a proinflammatory cytokine, has complex effects on the proliferation and growth of cancer cells. Previously, we treated a laryngeal cancer cell line (HEp-2) with TNF-α and demonstrated that this treatment suppressed polycystin-2, a transient receptor potential cation channel expression and ATP-induced Ca release but increased HEp-2 cell proliferation and growth.

Background: The human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) and transcription factor forkhead box protein M1 (FOXM1) are proto-oncogenes and have expressed in various kinds of human solid malignancies. However, the clinical significance of HER2 and FOXM1 in colorectal cancer (CRC) remains controversial, and there is no related report of the connection between HER2 and FOXM1 in colorectal cancer. This study aims to investigate the clinical values based on the connection of HER2 with FOXM1 in colorectal cancer.

This study was aimed to assess serum microRNA-30d-5p (miR-30d-5p) expression in patients with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma before and after operation, exploring its associations with clinical pathological parameters. A total of 30 esophageal cancer patients who underwent radical resection and were pathologically confirmed with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma in the First Affiliated Hospital of Anhui Medical University, from April to May in 2013, were enrolled, alongside 19 healthy controls. The expression levels of miRNA in serum from patients with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma before and after operation were assessed by microarrays and real-time PCR (RT-PCR).

In this study, we aimed to compare the volume and density of the cerebellar gray matter (GM) in patients with MDD and in healthy controls (HCs) and explore the association between these cerebellar parameters and measurements of emotional memory and clinical severity.
Method: Voxel-based morphometry (VBM) and Individual Brain Atlases using Statistical Parametric Mapping (IBASPM) were used to assess GM density and volume in the cerebellum, respectively, in patients with MDD and the HCs.

Background: Ferritin light chain (FTL) is a functionally distinct composition of ferritin, which is over-expressed and play an important role in multiple human malignancies.
Methods: Matched normal and cancerous tissues in 60 gastric cancer (GC) patients were detected for FTL expression using immunohistochemistry staining. The relationship betweent FTL expression and clinicopathological features was analyzed by chi-square test, and the Kaplan-Meier curves and Cox regression analyses were used to calculate the overall survival (OS) characteristics and recurrence-free survival (RFS).

Paired related homeobox1 (PRRX1) was a newly identified Epithelial mesenchymal transition (EMT) inducer. It was found that the decreased expression of PRRX1 in breast cancer and liver cancer could enable tumor cells to obtain tumor stem cell characteristics in vitro studies. However, the role of PRRX1 in lung cancer was still unknown.

The present study aimed to investigate the effect of genetic polymorphisms of catechol-O-methyl transferase (COMT), apolipoprotein E (APOE), and brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) on the modulation of the chemotherapy-induced cognitive impairment (CICI) in breast cancer patients. Eighty triple negative breast cancer (TNBC) and 165 non-triple negative breast cancer (NTNBC) patients were selected, and subjected to a number of neuropsychological tests, including memory questionnaires, before and after chemotherapy. Six single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), including COMT (rs165599, rs4680, rs737865), APOE (rs429358, rs7412), and BDNF (rs6265), were evaluated.

Globus pallidus interna (GPi) is an effective deep brain stimulation site for the treatment of Tourette syndrome (TS), and plays a crucial role in the pathophysiology of TS. To investigate the functional network feature of GPi in TS patients, we retrospectively studied 24 boys with 'pure' TS and 32 age-/education-matched healthy boys by resting state functional magnetic resonance images. Amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (ALFF) and functional connectivity were used to estimate the local activity in GPi and its functional coordinate with the whole brain regions, respectively.
