Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) represents a lethal cancer, and most HCC cases occur in the fibrotic or cirrhotic livers. Hepatic stellate cells (HSCs), the main effector cells of liver fibrosis, could secret biological contents to maintain liver inflammation. Herein, we aimed to identify the key transcription factor secreted by extracellular vesicles (EVs) derived from HSCs and explored its oncogenic mechanism.

Article Synopsis
  • HORMAD1 is a cancer/testis antigen that has been found to be significantly upregulated in gastric cancer, correlating with poor prognosis.
  • Research showed that HORMAD1 influences cancer cell growth and invasion by affecting the NF-κB signaling pathway and promoting the epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT).
  • HORMAD1 may serve as a valuable prognostic biomarker and potential therapeutic target for gastric cancer treatment.

Lateral Osteotomy for the Surgical Treatment of the Asian Wide Nose.

J Craniofac Surg

November 2023

Department of Plastic Surgery, the Ninth Hospital of Shanghai Jiaotong, University School of Medicine, Shanghai, China.

Objective: Narrowing of the nasal dorsum allows for a more pleasing moderate width. We here introduce a lateral osteotomy technique that is less traumatic and easier to perform than commonly used procedures in Asian and share our experiences in the application.

Methods: After a blunt dissection of the periosteum at the mucosal side of the nasal bone, all patients who underwent treatment using nasal osteotomy at the level of the maxillary nasal process were retrospectively analyzed.

Motor signs accompanying seizures have been considered to result in overexertion of muscles and have the ability to cause elevated levels of serum creatine kinase (CK). There were no previous studies on the treatment of seizure-induced elevated CK. We summarized the characteristics and treatments of six patients with significant elevation of CK after seizure onset.

Resistance to HER2-targeted therapy narrows the efficacy of cancer immunotherapy. Although 4-1BB/CD137 is a promising drug target as a costimulatory molecule of immune cells, no therapeutic drug has been approved in the clinic because of systemic toxicity or limited efficacy. Previously, we developed a humanized anti-HER2 monoclonal antibody (mAb) HuA21 and anti-4-1BB mAb HuB6 with distinct antigen epitopes for cancer therapy.

There is significant variability with respect to the prognosis of nonmetastatic clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) patients with venous tumor thrombus (VTT). By applying multiregion whole-exome sequencing on normal-tumor-thrombus-metastasis quadruples from 33 ccRCC patients, we showed that metastases were mainly seeded by VTT (81.8%) rather than primary tumors (PTs).

Highly efficient endocytosis and multi-approach integrated therapeutic tactics are important factors in oncotherapy. With the aid of thermally reversible furan-maleimide dynamic covalent bonds and the "polyprodrug amphiphiles" concept, thermo- and reduction-responsive PEG(-COOH)Fu/MI(-SS-)CPT copolymers were fabricated by the Diels-Alder (D-A) coupling of hydrophilic Fu(-COOH)-PEG and hydrophobic MI(-SS-)-CPT building blocks. The copolymers could self-assemble to form composite nanoparticles with a photothermal conversion reagent (IR780) and maintain excellent stability.

Article Synopsis
  • Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a common but challenging cancer, with most patients not suitable for surgery.
  • Traditional treatment options are limited, but this case involved a 69-year-old patient receiving an aggressive combination of conversion therapies to improve his condition.
  • The strategy combined transcatheter arterial embolization, chemotherapy, and targeted therapies, leading to a successful surgery and no recurrence observed after six months.

Elderly patients with gastric cancer (GC) exhibit unique physiological conditions and population characteristics. However, no efficient predictive tools have been developed for this patient subgroup. We extracted data on elderly patients diagnosed with stage I-III GC between 2010 and 2015 from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database, and applied Cox regression analysis to examine factors associated with cancer-specific survival (CSS).

Objective: This study aimed to compare the ability of three frailty assessments to predict adverse outcomes after elective gastrointestinal surgery and analyze how frailty assessments impact the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) risk prediction model.

Methods: Frailty was measured using the FRAIL scale, Fried Phenotype (FP), and Clinical Frailty Scale (CFS), alongside ASA assessments before surgery. Univariate and logistic regression analyses were used to determine the predictive value of each method.

Am J Cancer Res

May 2023

Inflammation and Immune Mediated Diseases Laboratory of Anhui Province, Anhui Institute of Innovative Drugs, School of Pharmacy, Anhui Medical University Hefei, China.

Since the discovery of the first miRNA in 1993, numerous studies have focused on their biogenesis, their functions on regulating a diversity of cellular processes, and the molecular mechanisms underlying their regulatory activity. The critical roles they play during pathogenesis have also been explored. With the advancement on next-generation sequencing, new classes of small RNA with distinct functions have been discovered.

Background: As a substrate for cell growth, elastin can promote the regeneration and remodeling of the epidermis, which plays an important role in delaying skin aging. However, elastin proteins are more than 700 amino acids long and cannot be absorbed through the skin, which prevents the direct utilization of elastin in the prevention and treatment of aging skin.

Methods: We designed an elastin-like recombinant polypeptide (ELR) which could be absorbed through the skin based on the property of hexapeptide VGVAPG.

E26 transcription factor-1 (ETS1) is involved in extracellular matrix remodeling, migratory infiltration and angiogenesis in tumors and known to play an important role in tumor progression. However, the mechanism by which ETS1 promotes tumor progression remains elusive. In this report, we show that ETS1 is highly expressed in breast tumor tissues and specifically associated with the tumor metastasis and poor survival in triple negative breast cancer (TNBC) tumors, upon analysis by immunohistochemical (IHC) staining of tumor samples from 240 breast cancer cases.

Objective: We aim to improve the decision-making process of nursing evaluation, and the purpose of this paper was to introduce nursing outcome classifications based on standardized nursing language, as well as build a comprehensive nursing evaluation decision-making system model based on an artificial neural network and fuzzy comprehensive evaluations.

Methods: Based on the principle and method of the decision support system (DSS), this paper proposed a framework of DSS and developed an intelligent nursing decision support system which integrates expert systems, data, models and knowledge.

Results: Taking cancer patients as examples, based on the analysis and comparison of cancer stressors and their frequency of occurrence, this paper found that the 5 major factors for cancer patients' stress events were lack of privacy, attitude of the medical workers, unfamiliar medical workers and uncomfortable temperature in wards.
