Background: In diabetic wounds, M2 polarization of macrophages regulates the transition from an inflammatory phase to a proliferative phase. Prior investigations have demonstrated the potential of deferoxamine (DFO) in creating a localized hypoxic microenvironment, which could stimulate angiogenesis by promoting vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) secretion in diabetic wound healing. Nevertheless, there is still no clear information on whether this chemically induced hypoxic microenvironment modulates macrophage polarization to promote diabetic wound healing.

Neonatal respiratory distress syndrome (NRDS) is a common complication of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and late preterm births. Research suggests that SIRT1 was involved in LPS-induced acute respiratory distress syndrome, but its mechanism remains to be further explored. Here, pregnant rats were intraperitoneally injected with 45 mg/Kg streptozotocin at day 0 of gestation to induce GDM and injected with LPS at day 17 of gestation to induce late preterm birth.

Research progress on hydrogel-based drug therapy in melanoma immunotherapy.

BMB Rep

February 2024

State Key Laboratory of Cancer Biology, Biotechnology Center, School of Pharmacy, The Fourth Military Medical University, Xi'an 710032, China.

Melanoma is one of the most aggressive skin tumors, and conventional treatment modalities are not effective in treating advanced melanoma. Although immunotherapy is an effective treatment for melanoma, it has disadvantages, such as a poor response rate and serious systemic immune-related toxic side effects. The main solution to this problem is the use of biological materials such as hydrogels to reduce these side effects and amplify the immune killing effect against tumor cells.

The physiological phenomenon and regulation of macrophage polarization in diabetic wound.

Mol Biol Rep

November 2023

Department of Burns and Plastic Surgery & Wound Repair Surgery, the Lanzhou University Second Hospital, Lanzhou, Gansu, China.

Macrophages play a crucial role in regulating wound healing, as they undergo a transition from the proinflammatory M1 phenotype to the proliferative M2 phenotype, ultimately contributing to a favorable outcome. However, in hyperglycemic and hyper-reactive oxygen species environments, the polarization of macrophages becomes dysregulated, hindering the transition from the inflammatory to proliferative phase and consequently delaying the wound healing process. Consequently, regulating macrophage polarization is often regarded as a potential target for the treatment of diabetic wounds.
