Weil's disease, an icterohemorrhagic infection, is the most severe and fatal form of leptospirosis and is characterized by jaundice, renal dysfunction, and hemorrhagic predisposition. Weil's disease with HIV infection has rarely been reported. A 68-year-old male with HIV infection presented to our hospital with fever and dyspnea that progressed to severe hemoptysis and systemic multiple organ failure, necessitating a tracheal intubation ventilator.

Objective: Flow diverters (FDs) have been used in unruptured intracranial vertebral artery dissecting aneurysms (IVADAs) with seemingly more favorable outcomes compared with stent-assisted coiling (SAC). However, the benefits of FDs over SAC in unruptured IVADAs need further evaluation.
Methods: This was a propensity score-matched, retrospective cohort study.

Background: Since diagnosis of mood disorder heavily depends on signs and symptoms, emerging researches have been studying biomarkers with the attempt to improve diagnostic accuracy, but none of the findings have been broadly accepted. The purpose of the present study was to construct a preliminary diagnostic model to distinguish major depressive disorder (MDD) and bipolar disorder (BD) using potential commonly tested blood biomarkers.
Methods: Information of 721 inpatients with an ICD-10 diagnosis of MDD or BD were collected from the electronic medical record system.

Neuropathic pain is a debilitating chronic pain condition and is refractory to the currently available treatments. Emerging evidence suggests that melatonin exerts analgesic effects in rodent models of neuropathic pain. Nevertheless, the exact underlying mechanisms of the analgesic effects of melatonin on neuropathic pain are largely unknown.

Background: The morbidity and mortality of community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) remain high among infectious diseases. It was reported that angiopoietin-like 4 (ANGPTL4) could be a diagnostic biomarker and a therapeutic target for pneumonia. This study aimed to develop a more objective, specific, accurate, and individualized scoring system to predict the severity of CAP.

Background: As a minimally invasive treatment for common bile duct (CBD) stones, ultrasound-guided percutaneous transhepatic cholangioscopic lithotripsy (PTCSL) is gaining attention and recognition from the medical community.
Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted on patients with CBD stones treated in our hospital from January 2016 to April 2022. Patients were divided into three groups: 77 treated with PTCSL, 93 with endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), and 103 with laparoscopic common bile duct exploration (LCBDE).

Background: Dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitors (DPP-4i) have become firmly established in treatment algorithms and national guidelines for improving glycemic control in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM).To report the findings from a multicenter, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled phase 3 clinical trial, which was designed to assess the efficacy and safety of a novel DPP-4 inhibitor fotagliptin in treatment-naive patients with T2DM.
Methods: Patients with T2DM were randomized to receive fotagliptin (n = 230), alogliptin (n = 113) or placebo (n = 115) at a 2:1:1 ratio for 24 weeks of double-blind treatment period, followed by an open-label treatment period, making up a total of 52 weeks.

Background: Despite improvements in prognosis due to advances in treatment, including surgery, genetic screening, and molecular targeted therapy, the outcomes of ovarian cancer (OC) remain unsatisfactory. Internal mRNA modifications are extremely common in eukaryotes; N6-methyladenosine (m6A) alteration has significant effects on mRNA stability and translation, and it is involved in the pathophysiology of numerous diseases related to cancer.
Methods: Bioinformatics analysis, quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction and Western blotting were used to detect the expression of vir-like m6A methyltransferase associated (KIAA1429) in OC tissues and cell lines.

Background: Clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) is closely associated with steroid hormones and their receptors affected by lipid metabolism. Recently, there has been growing interest in the carcinogenic role of NR3C1, the sole gene responsible for encoding glucocorticoid receptor. However, the specific role of NR3C1 in ccRCC remains unclear.

Background: Myocardial infarction (MI) leads to cardiomyocyte death, poor cardiac remodeling, and heart failure, making it a major cause of mortality and morbidity. To restore cardiac pumping function, induction of cardiomyocyte regeneration has become a focus of academic interest. The Hippo pathway is known to regulate cardiomyocyte proliferation and heart size, and its inactivation allows adult cardiomyocytes to re-enter the cell cycle.

Background: The ruminant gastrointestinal contains numerous microbiomes that serve a crucial role in sustaining the host's productivity and health. In recent times, numerous studies have revealed that variations in influencing factors, including the environment, diet, and host, contribute to the shaping of gastrointestinal microbial adaptation to specific states. Therefore, understanding how host and environmental factors affect gastrointestinal microbes will help to improve the sustainability of ruminant production systems.

ATPase family AAA domain-containing protein 1 (ATAD1) maintains mitochondrial homeostasis by removing mislocalized tail-anchored (TA) proteins from the mitochondrial outer membrane (MOM). Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection induces mitochondrial fragmentation, and viral NS5B protein is a TA protein. Here, we investigate whether ATAD1 plays a role in regulating HCV infection.

Incomplete radiofrequency ablation (IRFA) triggers mild protective autophagy in residual tumor cells and results in an immunosuppressive microenvironment. This accelerates the recurrence of residual tumors and causes resistance to anti-PD-1/PDL1 therapy, which bringing a great clinical challenge in residual tumors immunotherapy. Mild autophagy activation can promote cancer cell survival while further amplification of autophagy contributes to immunogenic cell death (ICD).

Objectives: To develop a radiomics model in contrast-enhanced cone-beam breast CT (CE-CBBCT) for preoperative prediction of axillary lymph node (ALN) status and metastatic burden of breast cancer.
Methods: Two hundred and seventy-four patients who underwent CE-CBBCT examination with two scanners between 2012 and 2021 from two institutions were enrolled. The primary tumor was annotated in each patient image, from which 1781 radiomics features were extracted with PyRadiomics.
Background: The severity assessment of lumbar disc herniation (LDH) on MR images is crucial for selecting suitable surgical candidates. However, the interpretation of MR images is time-consuming and requires repetitive work. This study aims to develop and evaluate a deep learning-based diagnostic model for automated LDH detection and classification on lumbar axial T2-weighted MR images.

Point mutations in the DEAD-box helicase DDX24 are associated with vascular malformations such as multi-organ venous and lymphatic defect (MOVLD) syndrome and Budd-Chiari syndrome, with the pathogenesis largely uncharacterized. DDX24 is mainly located in the nucleolus, where nucleophosmin (NPM1) regulates nucleolar homeostasis via liquid-liquid phase separation (LLPS). However, the connection between DDX24 and NPM1 in vascular malformation remains elusive.
