Electronic address:

Canonically, the transcription factor interferon regulatory factor 5 (IRF5) is a key mediator of innate and adaptive immunity downstream of pathogen recognition receptors such as Toll-like receptors (TLRs). Hence, dysregulation of IRF5 function has been widely implicated in inflammatory and autoimmune diseases. Over the last few decades, dysregulation of IRF5 expression has been also reported in hematologic malignancies and solid cancers that support a role for IRF5 in malignant transformation, tumor immune regulation, clinical prognosis, and treatment response.

Diabetes and bacterial co-infection are two independent risk factors for respiratory syncytial virus disease severity.

Front Med (Lausanne)

November 2023

Department of Applied Mathematics and Statistics, Stony Brook University, Stony Brook, NY, United States.

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is common among older adults hospitalized with lower respiratory tract infection, yet information on the impact of DM on disease severity is limited. This study retrospectively analyzed 46 Turkish patients infected with respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), with information on their comorbidities, co-infection status, and symptoms. Patients are grouped into four severity levels from mild to severe, according to lung parenchymal infiltration status and oxygen level.

  • Choline acetyltransferase (ChAT) helps make a chemical called acetylcholine that can reduce inflammation in the body, especially through the vagus nerve.
  • Scientists tested if ChAT in the blood changes during inflammation and if it can help control the release of chemicals that cause inflammation.
  • They found that ChAT levels in mice increased after inflammation and that giving ChAT could lower inflammation, suggesting it might be useful as a treatment for inflammatory diseases in humans.

Background: The noradrenergic innervation of the spleen is implicated in the autonomic control of inflammation and has been the target of neurostimulation therapies for inflammatory diseases. However, there is no real-time marker of its successful activation, which hinders the development of anti-inflammatory neurostimulation therapies and mechanistic studies in anti-inflammatory neural circuits.

Methods: In mice, we performed fast-scan cyclic voltammetry (FSCV) in the spleen during intravenous injections of norepinephrine (NE), and during stimulation of the vagus, splanchnic, or splenic nerves.

Dysregulated apoptosis and proliferation are fundamental properties of cancer, and microRNAs (miRNA) are critical regulators of these processes. Loss of miR-15a/16-1 at chromosome 13q14 is the most common genomic aberration in chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL). Correspondingly, the deletion of either murine miR-15a/16-1 or miR-15b/16-2 locus in mice is linked to B cell lymphoproliferative malignancies.

Understanding how to design engaging unguided digital health interventions is key in our ability to utilize digital tools to improve access to care. Therapeutic persuasiveness (TP) is a design concept that relates to how the digital intervention features as a whole should be designed to encourage users to make positive changes in their lives, while reducing the experienced effort required from them to engage in these activities. In our previous work, we examined the user traffic of publicly available programs, finding programs' TP quality to be a reliable, robust, and stable predictor of real-world usage; however, these findings have not been subject to experimental manipulation in a controlled trial.

Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) clones contain subpopulations differing in time since the last cell division ("age"): recently born, proliferative (PF; CXCR4CD5), intermediate (IF; CXCR4CD5), and resting (RF; CXCR4CD5) fractions. Herein, we used deuterium (H) incorporation into newly synthesized DNA in patients to refine the kinetics of CLL subpopulations by characterizing two additional CXCR4/CD5 fractions, i.e.

The Effect of Emotion Regulation on Executive Function.

J Cogn Psychol (Hove)

February 2023

Ferkauf Graduate School of Psychology, Yeshiva University, Bronx, New York.

Emotion regulation and executive function are associated: adaptive regulatory strategies are linked to better executive functioning while maladaptive strategies correspond with worse executive functioning. However, if - and how - these two processes affect one another has not previously been explored; most studies have employed a correlational approach, leaving the direction of influence unknown. We aim to address this gap by using an experimental design to explore the impact of emotion regulation on executive functioning.
