Polymer heart valves are a promising alternative to bioprostheses, the use of which is limited by the risks of calcific deterioration of devitalized preserved animal tissues. This is especially relevant in connection with the increasingly widespread use of transcatheter valves. Advances in modern organic chemistry provide a wide range of polymers that can replace biological material in the production of valve prostheses.

Dynamic changes in genomic DNA methylation patterns govern the epigenetic developmental programs and accompany the organism's aging. Epigenetic clock (eAge) algorithms utilize DNA methylation to estimate the age and risk factors for diseases as well as analyze the impact of various interventions. High-throughput bisulfite sequencing methods, such as reduced-representation bisulfite sequencing (RRBS) or whole genome bisulfite sequencing (WGBS), provide an opportunity to identify the genomic regions of disordered or heterogeneous DNA methylation, which might be associated with cell-type heterogeneity, DNA methylation erosion, and allele-specific methylation.

Among the vascular prostheses used for aortic replacement, 95% are woven or knitted grafts from polyester fibers. Such grafts require sealing, for which gelatin (Gel) is most often used. Sometimes antibiotics are added to the sealant.

to study the association of relative leukocyte DNA telomere length with death from natural causes during a 15-year follow-up in a middle-aged and elderly Siberian population. Study of the association of the relative length of leukocyte telomeres (LTL) with fatal outcomes during a 15-year follow-up of a random population sample formed in 2003-2005 (n=9 360, 45-69 years old, Novosibirsk, HAPIEE project). The main group included the persons died from natural causes (except external) without a previous history of CVD and cancer (n=609); controls were stratified by sex and age (n=799).

The evolution of gonochorism from hermaphroditism is linked with the formation of sex chromosomes, as well as the evolution of sex-biased and sex-specific gene expression to allow both sexes to reach their fitness optimum. There is evidence that sexual selection drives the evolution of male-biased gene expression in particular. However, previous research in this area in animals comes from either theoretical models or comparative studies of already old sex chromosomes.

Background: Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of late-onset blindness in elderly. The occurrence and development of AMD is a multifactorial complex process where autophagy plays an important role. The first-line drugs for neovascular AMD (nAMD) are inhibitors of VEGF, with up to 30% of patients having an incomplete response to treatment.

Whole genome duplication (WGD) is an evolutionary event resulting in a redundancy of genetic material. Different mechanisms of WGD, allo- or autopolyploidization, lead to distinct evolutionary trajectories of newly formed polyploids. Genome studies on such species are important for understanding the early stages of genome evolution.

The content and quality of gluten in wheat grain is a distinctive characteristic that determines the final properties of wheat flour. In this study, a genome-wide association study (GWAS) was performed on a wheat panel consisting of bread wheat varieties and the introgression lines (ILs) obtained via hybridization with tetraploid wheat relatives. A total of 17 stable quantitative trait nucleotides (QTNs) located on chromosomes 1D, 2A, 2B, 3D, 5A, 6A, 7B, and 7D that explained up to 21% of the phenotypic variation were identified.

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of irreversible visual impairment worldwide. The development of AMD is associated with inflammation, oxidative stress, and progressive proteostasis imbalance, in the regulation of which c-Jun N-terminal kinases (JNK) play a crucial role. JNK inhibition is discussed as an alternative way for prevention and treatment of AMD and other neurodegenerative diseases.

Dietary composition substantially determines human health and affects complex diseases, including obesity, inflammation and cancer. Thus, food supplements have been widely used to accommodate dietary composition to the needs of individuals. Among the promising supplements are dietary phospholipids (PLs) that are commonly found as natural food ingredients and as emulsifier additives.

Titanium oxide (TiO) and oxynitride (N-TiO) coatings can increase nitinol stents' cytocompatibility with endothelial cells. Methods of TiO and N-TiO sputtering and cytocompatibility assessments vary significantly among different research groups, making it difficult to compare results. The aim of this work was to develop an integral cytocompatibility index (ICI) and a decision tree algorithm (DTA) using the "EA.

Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) are chronic and relapsing inflammatory disorders of the gastrointestinal tract with complex etiology and no strategies for complete cure. IBD are often complicated by mental disorders like anxiety and depression, indicating substantial shifts in the microbiota gut-brain axis. However, the mechanisms connecting IBD to mental diseases are still under debate.

We studied the relationship between the leucocyte telomere length (LTL) and the copy number of mitochondrial DNA (CNmtDNA) and the development of acute coronary syndrome during 15 years of follow-up. A random population sample was examined at baseline in 2003-2005 (n=9 360, men and women 45-69 years old, Novosibirsk, the HAPIEE project) and followed-up for 15 years. In the frame of nested case-control design, we selected cases - incident myocardial infarction/acute coronary syndrome (MI/ACS) among those free from baseline CVD (n=256) and sex- and age-stratified control among those free from baseline CVD and cancer and alive by the end of follow-up (n=799).

Neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD) is the leading cause of vision loss in the elderly. The gold standard of nAMD treatment is intravitreal injections of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) inhibitors. Genetic factors may influence the response to anti-VEGF therapy and result in a high degree of response variability.

Copy number variants (CNVs) are genomic structural variations that contribute to many adaptive and economically important traits in livestock. In this study, we detected CNVs in 354 animals from 16 Russian indigenous sheep breeds and analysed their possible functional roles. Our analysis of the entire sample set resulted in 4527 CNVs forming 1450 CNV regions (CNVRs).

CD95/Fas/APO-1 can trigger apoptotic as well as nonapoptotic pathways in immune cells. CD95 signaling in humans can be inhibited by several mechanisms, including mutations in the gene encoding CD95. CD95 mutations lead to autoimmune disorders, such as autoimmune lymphoproliferative syndrome (ALPS).

Stable free radicals are widely used as molecular probes and labels in various biophysical and biomedical research applications of magnetic resonance spectroscopy and imaging. Among these radicals, sterically shielded nitroxides of pyrrolidine series demonstrate the highest stability in biological systems. Here, we suggest new convenient procedure for preparation of 3-carboxy-2,2,5,5-tetraethylpyrrolidine-1-oxyl, a reduction-resistant analog of widely used carboxy-Proxyl, from cheap commercially available reagents with the yield exceeding the most optimistic literature data.
