We use non-resonant Raman scattering to demonstrate a large enhancement of the effective refractive index experienced by Raman photons in a scattering medium comprising spatially-correlated photonic structures of core-shell TiO@Silica scatterers mixed with silica nanoparticles and suspended in ethanol. We show that the high refractive index extends outside the physical boundary of the medium, which is attributed to the evanescent contributions of electromagnetic modes that are strongly localized within the medium. Notably, the effective enhancement can be observed even at very low intensities of Raman emission.

Significance: Extending the photoacoustic microscopy (PAM) into the mid-infrared (MIR) molecular fingerprint region constitutes a promising route toward label-free imaging of biological molecular structures. Realizing this objective requires a high-energy nanosecond MIR laser source. However, existing MIR laser technologies are limited to either low pulse energy or free-space structure that is sensitive to environmental conditions.

The synthesis of multiple narrow optical spectral lines, precisely and independently tuned across the near- to mid-infrared region, is a pivotal research area that enables selective and real-time detection of trace gas species within complex gas mixtures. However, existing methods for developing such light sources suffer from limited flexibility and very low pulse energy, particularly in the mid-infrared domain. Here, we introduce a concept that is based on the combination of an appropriate design of near-infrared fiber laser pump and cascaded configuration of gas-filled anti-resonant hollow-core fiber technology.

More than half of pharmaceutical drugs in use are chiral, necessitating accurate techniques for their characterization. Enantiomers, molecules with mirrored symmetry, often exhibit similar physical traits but possess distinct chemical and biological implications. This study harnesses the strong light-matter interaction induced by "superchiral" light to perform Surface-Enhanced Infrared Absorption (SEIRA) induced vibrational circular dichroism measurements in the mid-infrared spectral region.

Neurotransmitters are crucial for the proper functioning of neural systems, with dopamine playing a pivotal role in cognition, emotions, and motor control. Dysregulated dopamine levels are linked to various disorders, underscoring the need for accurate detection in research and diagnostics. Single-stranded DNA (ssDNA) aptamers are promising bioreceptors for dopamine detection due to their selectivity, improved stability, and synthesis feasibility.

Monitoring chemical levels is crucial for safeguarding both the environment and public health. Elevated levels of ammonia, for instance, can harm both humans and aquatic ecosystems, often indicating contamination from agriculture, industry, or sewage. Developing portable, high-resolution, and affordable methods for in situ monitoring of ammonia is thus imperative.

The miniaturization of photonic technologies calls for a deliberate integration of diverse materials to enable novel functionalities in chip-scale devices. Topological photonic systems are a promising platform to couple structured light with solid-state matter excitations and establish robust forms of 1D polaritonic transport. Here, we demonstrate a mechanism to efficiently trap mid-IR structured phonon-polaritons in topological defects of a metasurface integrated with hexagonal boron nitride (hBN).

Stable laser resonators support three fundamental families of transverse modes: the Hermite, Laguerre, and Ince Gaussian modes. These modes are crucial for understanding complex resonators, beam propagation, and structured light. We experimentally observe a new family of fundamental laser modes in stable resonators: Boyer-Wolf Gaussian modes.

Modern lens designs are capable of resolving greater than 10 gigapixels, while advances in camera frame-rate and hyperspectral imaging have made data acquisition rates of Terapixel/second a real possibility. The main bottlenecks preventing such high data-rate systems are power consumption and data storage. In this work, we show that analog photonic encoders could address this challenge, enabling high-speed image compression using orders-of-magnitude lower power than digital electronics.

Metasurfaces have recently risen to prominence in optical research, providing unique functionalities that can be used for imaging, beam forming, holography, polarimetry, and many more, while keeping device dimensions small. Despite the fact that a vast range of basic metasurface designs has already been thoroughly studied in the literature, the number of metasurface-related papers is still growing at a rapid pace, as metasurface research is now spreading to adjacent fields, including computational imaging, augmented and virtual reality, automotive, display, biosensing, nonlinear, quantum and topological optics, optical computing, and more. At the same time, the ability of metasurfaces to perform optical functions in much more compact optical systems has triggered strong and constantly growing interest from various industries that greatly benefit from the availability of miniaturized, highly functional, and efficient optical components that can be integrated in optoelectronic systems at low cost.

Exploiting the size and shape of nanoparticles is critical for engineering the optical and mechanical properties of nanoparticle systems that are ubiquitous in everyday life. However, accurate determination of nanoparticle morphology usually requires elaborated methods such as XRD or TEM, which are not suitable for non-invasive and rapid control. Dynamic light scattering on the other hand, relies on the motion of nanoparticles and mixes different rotational and translational diffusion coefficients to infer synthetic information about the shape in terms of effective hydrodynamic characteristics.

In this paper, we address the challenge of detecting small moving targets in dynamic environments characterized by the concurrent movement of both platform and sensor. In such cases, simple image-based frame registration and optical flow analysis cannot be used to detect moving targets. To tackle this, it is necessary to use sensor and platform meta-data in addition to image analysis for temporal and spatial anomaly detection.

A variety of topological Hamiltonians have been demonstrated in photonic platforms, leading to fundamental discoveries and enhanced robustness in applications such as lasing, sensing, and quantum technologies. To date, each topological photonic platform implements a specific type of Hamiltonian with inexistent or limited reconfigurability. Here, we propose and demonstrate different topological models by using the same reprogrammable integrated photonics platform, consisting of a hexagonal mesh of silicon Mach-Zehnder interferometers with phase shifters.

The theory of optical thermodynamics provides a comprehensive framework that enables a self-consistent description of the intricate dynamics of nonlinear multimoded photonic systems. This theory, among others, predicts a pressurelike intensive quantity (p[over ^]) that is conjugate to the system's total number of modes (M)-its corresponding extensive variable. Yet at this point, the nature of this intensive quantity is still nebulous.

Bandwidth and noise are fundamental considerations in all communication and signal processing systems. The group-velocity dispersion of optical fibers creates nulls in their frequency response, limiting the bandwidth and hence the temporal response of communication and signal processing systems. Intensity noise is often the dominant optical noise source for semiconductor lasers in data communication.

A light-trapping transparent electrode design based on sub-surface binary dielectric gratings is introduced and demonstrated experimentally. The structure consists of metallic wires patterned with an array of silicon nanobeams. Optimization of the grating geometry achieves selective suppression of zero-order diffraction, while enabling redirection of incident light to an angle that exceeds critical angle of the local environment.
