Objective: Magnetic anastomosis is an innovative technique for establishing esophageal continuity in infants born with esophageal atresia. Few case series featuring this technology have been published, with even fewer reports on complications. We present the entire Canadian experience with this approach.

Background: Selective dorsal rhizotomy (SDR) is commonly used to reduce spasticity in children with cerebral palsy (CP). Children with CP have an increased risk of spinal deformities that increase with age and Gross Motor Function Classification System (GMFCS) level. Few studies have considered the risk of spinal deformity post-SDR by GMFCS level.

Introduction: Over 90% of pediatric trauma deaths occur in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), yet pediatric trauma-focused training remains unstandardized and inaccessible, especially in LMICs. In Brazil, where trauma is the leading cause of death for children over age 1, we piloted the first global adaptation of the Trauma Resuscitation in Kids (TRIK) course and assessed its feasibility.
Methods: A 2-day simulation-based global TRIK course was hosted in Belo Horizonte in October 2022, led by one Brazilian and four Canadian instructors.

Importance: There is a need to understand the long-term outcomes among children infected with SARS-CoV-2.
Objective: To quantify the prevalence of post-COVID-19 condition (PCC) among children tested for SARS-CoV-2 infection in pediatric emergency departments (EDs).
Design, Setting, And Participants: Multicenter, prospective cohort study at 14 Canadian tertiary pediatric EDs that are members of the Pediatric Emergency Research Canada network with 90-day, 6-month, and 12-month follow-up.

Background: Ingestion and aspiration of caustic substances is a common problem in pediatrics and carries the risk of associated aspiration pneumonitis, laryngeal injury, and esophageal injury. Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) has been used to support adults with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) from aspiration of cement dust, however, literature outlining pediatric management in cases of alkali lung and airway injuries is lacking.
Case Summary: A 6-year-old boy presented with ARDS from cement aspiration requiring high-pressure ventilation.

Purpose: We sought to describe the processes undertaken for the systematic selection and consensus determination of the common data elements for inclusion in a national pediatric critical care database in Canada.
Methods: We conducted a multicentre Delphi consensus study of Canadian pediatric intensive care units (PICUs) participating in the creation of a national database. Participants were PICU health care professionals, allied health professionals, caregivers, and other stakeholders.

Introduction: The high burden of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infection in young children disproportionately occurs in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). The PROUD (Preventing RespiratOry syncytial virUs in unDerdeveloped countries) Taskforce of 24 RSV worldwide experts assessed key needs for RSV prevention in LMICs, including vaccine and newer preventive measures.
Methods: A global, survey-based study was undertaken in 2021.

Purpose: Radiation oncologists need to have more than sound clinical and technical competencies. To optimize care for patients and advance all aspects of radiation oncology (RO), radiation oncologists must also be effective leaders. Embedding systematic leadership education into RO training programs is challenging.

Background: Physical activity (PA) patterns in children with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) over time are not well described. The aim of this study was to describe associations of physical activity (PA) with disease activity, function, pain, and psychosocial stress in the 2 years following diagnosis in an inception cohort of children with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA).
Methods: In 82 children with newly diagnosed JIA, PA levels, prospectively determined at enrollment, 12 and 24 months using the Physical Activity Questionnaire for Children (PAQ-C) and Adolescents (PAQ-A) raw scores, were evaluated in relation to disease activity as reflected by arthritis activity (Juvenile Arthritis Disease Activity Score (JADAS-71)), function, pain, and psychosocial stresses using a linear mixed model approach.

Background: Up to 30 % of children with acute asthma are refractory to initial therapy, and 84 % of this subpopulation needs hospitalization. Finding safe, noninvasive, and effective strategies to treat this high-risk group would substantially decrease hospitalizations, healthcare costs, and the psycho-social burden of the disease. Whereas intravenous magnesium (Mg) is effective in severe refractory asthma, its use is sporadic due to safety concerns, with the main treatment goal being to prevent intensive care unit admission.

Background And Objectives: Autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) is a progressive inflammatory liver disease of unknown etiology, with limited population-based estimates of pediatric incidence. We reported the incidence of pediatric AIH in Canada and described its clinical characteristics.
Methods: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of patients aged <18 years diagnosed with AIH between 2000-2009 at all pediatric centers in Canada.
Over the course of the summer of 2006, four adolescent patients were hospitalized because of intentional Datura stramonium (Angel's Trumpet) ingestion. Their records were reviewed for the presence of signs and symptoms of toxicity, clinical course, treatment and outcome. All four patients had a decreased level of consciousness measured by the Glasgow Coma Scale, visual hallucinations, dilated pupils and agitation.
