Aim: Abnormal thyroid function tests (TFTs) are found in a wide range of settings in hospitalised infants. This retrospective descriptive study reviewed management decisions and outcomes of these infants, identifying factors influencing clinicians' decision to treat with thyroxine.
Methods: Data were collected for all infants referred to the on-call endocrinology service at a tertiary Australian centre for thyroid dysfunction between 1 July 2019 and 30 June 2021.

Background: In Ethiopia, Maternal Death Surveillance and Response (MDSR) was integrated into the existing Integrated Disease Surveillance and Response (IDSR) system in 2014. Despite providing valuable evidence to inform policies and actions, system implementation has not been evaluated. Thus, a national-level evaluation was conducted to assess the level and status of system implementation.

Background Several studies have investigated the role of neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) in diagnosing and predicting the severity of acute appendicitis; however, few studies have analyzed its usefulness in pediatric appendicitis patients particularly in predicting postoperative complications. We investigated the role of NLR and assessed its clinical utility as a predictor of postoperative infectious complications in children with acute appendicitis. Methodology We performed a prospective cross-sectional study from July 2023 to July 2024 on 135 pediatric patients aged five to 12 years undergoing emergency appendectomy and having operative findings or histopathological confirmation of appendicitis.

Background: Acute diarrhoea among children mainly due to infection must be treated prophylactically to reduce mortality. The objective of this study was to compare the outcome of using bacterial probiotics (Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus) versus fungal probiotics (Saccharomyces) for acute diarrhoea among children aged 6 months to 5 years.
Methods: A non-randomized control trial was conducted at diarrhoea ward, the Children's Hospital, Lahore from 1st March 2022 to 1st March 2024.

Background: Children and young people with intellectual disability have poor healthcare and are at risk of patient safety events due to lack of staff training and consensus on competencies for safe and quality care. For the adoption of reasonable adjustments in mainstream paediatric healthcare clinical competencies needed to be adapted to an existing patient safety education framework.
Methods: Thirteen experts in intellectual disability health and patient safety participated in an eDelphi survey aimed at reaching consensus on core competencies required of the paediatric healthcare workforce.

Adeno-associated virus (AAV) is a widely used vehicle for gene delivery, lending interest to developing methods for enhancing AAV transduction and transgene expression. Here, we profile the function of several topoisomerase poisons, which are small molecules that stabilize topoisomerase enzymatic intermediates, where topoisomerase enzymes are covalently bound at chromosomal DNA breaks. As previously observed, we found that the topoisomerase poisons camptothecin (CPT), doxorubicin (DOX), and etoposide (ETO) increased AAV transduction in cultured cell models.

Background: Current literature informs us that bivalent vaccines will generate a broader serum neutralizing antibody response to multiple SARS-CoV-2 variants, but studies on how this breadth relates to the memory B cell (MBC) and T cell responses are sparse. This study compared breadth of neutralising antibody, and memory B and T cell responses to monovalent or a bivalent ancestral/Omicron BA.1 COVID-19 booster vaccine.

Aim: To explore parents' experiences of early screening for cerebral palsy (CP) in three Australian states.
Method: This is a qualitative description study using semi-structured interviews. Participants were parents of children who had CP (n = 5), or high risk of CP (n = 10), or no CP (n = 11) at 2 years, and had completed early screening for CP.

Background: BK polyomavirus-associated nephropathy (BKPyVAN) occurs when BK polyomavirus (BKPyV) affects a transplanted kidney, leading to an initial injury characterised by cytopathic damage, inflammation, and fibrosis. BKPyVAN may cause permanent loss of graft function and premature graft loss. Early detection gives clinicians an opportunity to intervene by timely reduction in immunosuppression to reduce adverse graft outcomes.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFInfant mortality (IM), or death prior to the first birthday, is a key public health metric that increases with neighborhood structural inequities. However, neighborhood exposures shift as communities undergo gentrification, a pattern of neighborhood change defined by increasing affluence (in wealth, education, and housing costs). Gentrification has inconsistent associations with infant health outcomes like IM, which may be due to differing relationships between its composite measures and such outcomes.

To assess the longitudinal associations of genomic and exposomic liabilities for schizophrenia, both independently and jointly, with distressing psychotic experiences (PEs) and their persistence in early adolescence. The Adolescent Brain and Cognitive Development Study data from children with European ancestry were used (n=5,122). The primary outcome was past-month distressing PEs at 3-year follow-up.
