Stem cells, specifically embryonic stem cells (ESCs), mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), induced pluripotent stem cells (IPSCs), and neural progenitor stem cells (NSCs), are a possible treatment for stroke, Parkinson's disease (PD), and Huntington's disease (HD). Current preclinical data suggest stem cell transplantation is a potential treatment for these chronic conditions that lack effective long-term treatment options. Finding treatments with a wider therapeutic window and harnessing a disease-modifying approach will likely improve clinical outcomes.

Percutaneous retrieval of a Mobin-Uddin inferior vena cava filter 42 years following implantation.

Diagn Interv Radiol

November 2021

Department of Radiology, Division of Interventional Radiology, Northwestern Memorial Hospital, Chicago, Illinois, US.

Inferior vena cava filters (IVCFs) are an established alternative for protection from thromboembolism when anticoagulation fails or is contraindicated. Before the creation of retrievable IVCFs, patients received filters that were permanent or designed without standardized retrieval options. Although these filters were implanted for prolonged protection, chronic vena caval occlusion and post-thrombotic syndrome are potential sequelae.

Adult Bado type I Monteggia fracture dislocation: A case report.

Trauma Case Rep

December 2021

Emergency Medicine, Chicago Medical School at Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science, Emergency Medicine, Holy Cross Hospital, Chicago, IL, United States of America.

Introduction: Fractures of the proximal ulnar shaft accompanied by dislocation of the radial head have been described as "Monteggia fracture-dislocations," since the early nineteenth century. In 1967 Bado further classified these Monteggia fractures into four subtypes, based largely on the direction of the radial head dislocation (Bado, 1967). Despite being frequently discussed in the literature, Monteggia fracture dislocations are rare and represent only 0.

Splenic artery aneurysms (SAAs) are among the most common visceral aneurysms behind aortic and iliac arteries. Certain factors like aneurysm size (especially giant SAAs), hypertension (HTN), symptomatology, pregnancy, portal hypertension (pHTN), and liver transplantation increase the risk of rupture. Most often found incidentally, but when symptomatic, can present with nonspecific symptoms like nausea, vomiting, anorexia, and epigastric/left upper quadrant pain.

Tacrolimus has received considerable attention as a treatment approach for infertility associated with maternal-foetal immune abnormalities, such as repeated implantation failure (RIF) and recurrent pregnancy loss (RPL). This study examined the changes in T-helper (Th) 1 and 2 cell populations during pregnancy in peripheral blood of tacrolimus-treated RIF patients who delivered a liveborn infant from August 2012 to February 2020 at the National Centre for Child Health and Development. A total of 58 eligible study subjects were divided into two groups according to the presence of a history of RPL: (i) RIF-alone group ( = 31); and (ii) RIF-plus-RPL group ( = 27).

Erectile Dysfunction (ED) is defined as the inability to achieve and maintain an erection sufficient for sexual intercourse. Available treatments for ED provide only symptomatic relief, which is for the most part temporary. Regenerative therapies such as Low Intensity Shockwave, Platelet-Rich Plasma, and Stem Cell therapy can potentially provide a "cure" for ED by reversing the underlying pathology of ED rather than just treating the symptoms.

Electronic address:

Many studies have demonstrated that negative allosteric modulators (NAM) of metabotropic glutamate receptor 5 (mGlu5) reduce cocaine and methamphetamine seeking in extinction-reinstatement animal models of addiction. Less is known about effects of mGlu5 NAMs in abstinence models, particularly for methamphetamine. We used the incubation of drug craving model, in which cue-induced craving progressively intensifies after withdrawal from drug self-administration, to conduct the first studies of the following aspects of mGlu5 function in the rat nucleus accumbens (NAc) core during abstinence from methamphetamine self-administration: 1) functionality of the major form of synaptic depression in NAc medium spiny neurons, which is induced postsynaptically via mGlu5 and expressed presynaptically via cannabinoid type 1 receptors (CB1Rs), 2) mGlu5 surface expression and physical associations between mGlu5, Homer proteins, and diacylglycerol lipase-α, and 3) the effect of systemic and intra-NAc core administration of the mGlu5 NAM 3-((2-methyl-4-)ethynyl)pyridine (MTEP) on expression of incubated methamphetamine craving.
