Study Design: Retrospective review.

Objective: To validate using patient-reported outcome measurement information system-pain interference (PROMIS-PI) to assess outcomes in patients undergoing lumbar decompression surgery compared with well-established pain and disability measures.

Summary Of Background Data: PROMIS outcomes provide valuable information, but the PROMIS-PI measure has not been validated in lumbar decompression.

Protein translation is essential for some forms of synaptic plasticity. Here we used fluorescent noncanonical amino acid tagging (FUNCAT) to examine whether dopamine modulates protein translation in cultured nucleus accumbens (NAc) medium spiny neurons (MSN). These neurons were co-cultured with cortical neurons to restore excitatory synapses.

Subjective Cognitive Complaints and Anecdotal Descriptions of Postoperative Cognitive Decline: Missing Pieces of the Postoperative Neurocognitive Disorder Puzzle.

Adv Anesth

December 2024

Department of Anesthesia & Perioperative Care, University of California, San Francisco, Campus Box 0648, 521 Parnassus Avenue, 4th Floor, San Francisco, CA 94143, USA. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • Postoperative cognitive recovery is vital for patients and clinicians, but there hasn't been enough research on subjective cognitive complaints (SCC) after modern surgeries and anesthesia.
  • The article describes how SCC anecdotes relate to the established research diagnosis of postoperative cognitive decline (POCD) and uses recent studies to provide context.
  • It aims to equip anesthesiologists with knowledge on what is currently known—and not known—about cognitive recovery following surgery and anesthesia.

Introduction: Cardiac intensive care providers require a comprehensive understanding of cardiac output and oxygen delivery. The estimation of cardiac output in clinical practice often relies on thermodilution and the Fick principle. Central venous saturation and lactate levels are commonly used indicators for cardiac output assessment.

Background: The Plastic Surgery In-Service Training Examination (PSITE) remains a critical milestone in residency training. Successful preparation requires extensive studying during an individual's residency. This study focuses on the capacity of Generative Pre-trained Transformer 4 (GPT-4) to generate PSITE practice questions.

Purpose: To evaluate the influence of preoperative VR-12 physical component scores (PCS) on outcomes following cervical disc replacement (CDR).

Methods: Patients undergoing elective CDR were retrospectively identified. Patient-reported outcomes (PROs) of interest included VR-12 PCS/VR-12 Mental Component Score (MCS)/9-Item Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9)/Short Form-12 (SF-12) PCS and MCS/Patient-Reported Outcome Measurement Information System-Physical Function (PROMIS-PF)/Visual Analog Scale-Neck Pain (VAS-NP)/VAS-Arm Pain (VAS-AP)/Neck Disability Index (NDI).

Purpose: To evaluate the effect of baseline back pain severity on PROMIS mental health outcomes following minimally invasive lumbar decompression (LD).

Methods: Patients undergoing elective, primary, single-level LD were retrospectively reviewed from a prospective single spine surgeon registry. Perioperative characteristics, demographics, and the following patient-reported outcomes (PROs) were extracted: Oswestry Disability Index (ODI)/Patient-Health Questionnaire-9 /PROMIS-Physical Function/Anxiety/Pain Interference/Sleep Disturbance (PROMIS-PF/A/PI/SD).

Neurosurgery Residency Programs on Twitter (X): Current Use and Future Potential.

World Neurosurg

October 2024

Division of Pediatric Neurosurgery, Ann and Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital, Chicago, Illinois, USA; Department of Neurosurgery, Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, Chicago, Illinois, USA. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • A study was conducted to analyze Twitter (X) usage among U.S. neurosurgery residency programs to improve engagement and rankings.
  • Out of 123 programs, 78.8% had Twitter accounts, with 68.3% actively posting in 2023, gathering a total of 167,068 followers.
  • The findings showed that tweets mainly focused on resident information and research, and a positive correlation was found between social media following and program rankings, highlighting Twitter's role in increasing program visibility and outreach.

Preoperative motor weakness and the impact on patient reported outcomes in lateral lumbar interbody fusion.

J Clin Neurosci

July 2024

Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Rush University Medical Center, 1611 W. Harrison St. Suite #300, Chicago, IL 60612, United States. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • This study focuses on how preoperative motor weakness (MW) influences Patient-Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs) in patients undergoing lateral lumbar interbody fusion (LLIF).
  • It includes data from 214 patients, with 149 experiencing MW, and analyzes various outcomes like physical function, pain levels, and quality of life before and after surgery.
  • The findings indicate that while there were some demographic and perioperative differences between patients with and without MW, MW did not have a significant impact on overall PROM outcomes or minimum clinically important differences, except for one measure related to disability scores.

Background And Objectives: Distal basilar artery aneurysms (DBAs) are high-risk lesions for which endovascular treatment is preferred because of their deep location, yet indications for open clipping nonetheless remain. The subtemporal approach allows for early proximal control and direct visualization of critical posterior perforating arteries, especially for posterior-projecting aneurysms. Our objective was to describe our clinical experience with the subtemporal approach for clipping DBAs in the evolving endovascular era.

Animals constantly integrate sensory information with prior experience to select behavioral responses appropriate to the current situation. Genetic factors supporting this behavioral flexibility are often disrupted in neuropsychiatric conditions, such as the autism-linked gene which supports acoustically evoked habituation learning. encodes an AP2 endocytosis adaptor complex subunit, although its behavioral mechanisms and importance have been unclear.

Background/aims: In this meta-analysis, we studied the safety and efficacy of endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) for colorectal dysplasia in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).

Methods: Multiple databases were searched, and studies were retrieved based on pre-specified criteria until October 2022. The outcomes assessed were resection rates, procedural complications, local recurrence, metachronous tumors, and the need for surgery after ESD in IBD.

Regadenoson (brand name Lexiscan) is a specific adenosine receptor agonist commonly used in pharmacologic stress testing due to its coronary vasodilatory effects. Despite it being generally well-tolerated, the American Society of Nuclear Cardiology established absolute and relative contraindications to the use of regadenoson in patients with certain co-morbidities such as uncontrolled hyper/hypotension, sinus node disease, and second-degree heart blocks. While cases of advanced heart block after the administration of regadenoson have been reported, they remain incidental.

Background COVID-19 is a prothrombotic disease that can cause thromboembolism and microthrombi, which could lead to multiorgan failure and death. Since COVID-19 is a relatively new disease, there are guidelines for anticoagulation dosing for COVID-19 patients without consensus on the dosing. We studied the effects of different doses of anticoagulation in hospitalized patients with COVID-19 pneumonia and hypoxemia on any differences in need for high-flow oxygen, mechanical ventilation, and mortality.

Morel-Lavallée lesions are post-traumatic, internal degloving injuries associated with substantial patient mortality that are frequently undetected due to often presenting days to weeks after initial injury. Delay of diagnosis can perpetuate complications such as expansion and infection (Mutluoglu et al., 2021 [1]).
