Low molecular-weight heparin for thromboprophylaxis in patients undergoing gastric cancer surgery: an experience from one Korean institute.

Purpose: This study evaluated the efficacy for preventing venous thromboembolism (VTE) and adverse effects of low-molecular-weight heparin (LMWH) in order to launch a prospective clinical trial in Korea.

Methods: We reviewed the medical records of 108 consecutive patients who underwent gastric cancer surgery. These patients were divided into 2 groups according to the type of thromboprophylaxis: group A, LMWH combined with intermittent pneumatic compression (IPC); group B, IPC alone.

Clinical characteristics and outcomes of acute hepatitis a in Korea: a nationwide multicenter study.

The aim of this study was to investigate the clinical characteristics of acute hepatitis A during a recent outbreak in Korea. Data of patients diagnosed with acute hepatitis A from 2007 to 2009 were collected from 21 tertiary hospitals retrospectively. Their demographic, clinical, and serological characteristics and their clinical outcomes were analyzed.

Osteogenic potential of adult stem cells from human maxillary sinus membrane by Simvastatin in vitro: preliminary report.

Objectives: The objective of this study is to determine the adequate concentration and to evaluate the osteogenic potential of simvastatin in human maxillary sinus membrane-derived stem cells (hSMSC).

Materials And Methods: Mesenchymal stem cells derived from the human maxillary sinus membrane were treated with various concentrations of simvastatin. The adequate concentration of simvastatin for osteogenic induction was determined using bone morphogenetic protein (BMP-2).

Effect of gum chewing on the recovery from laparoscopic colorectal cancer surgery.

Purpose: We aimed to examine the effect of gum chewing after laparoscopic colorectal cancer surgery.

Methods: We reviewed the medical records of patients who underwent laparoscopic colorectal cancer surgery in Incheon St. Mary's Hospital, The Catholic University of Korea School of Medicine.

Correction of anemia with continuous erythropoietin receptor activator in Korean patients on long-term hemodialysis.

Continuous erythropoietin receptor activator (CERA) is an erythropoietin with a long-half life. This study investigated the efficacy of CERA for correcting anemia in Korean patients on dialysis. Patients (≥ 18 yr) who were not receiving any ESAs for more than 8 weeks were randomly assigned to either intravenous CERA once every 2 weeks (n=39) or epoetin beta thrice-weekly (n=41) during a 24-week correction phase.

Role of endoplasmic reticulum stress in rheumatoid arthritis pathogenesis.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic inflammatory disease characterized by abnormal proliferation of synoviocytes, leukocyte infiltration, and angiogenesis. The endoplasmic reticulum (ER) is the site of biosynthesis for all secreted and membrane proteins. The accumulation of unfolded proteins in the ER leads to a condition known as ER stress.

Efficacy and safety of 120-W GreenLight High-Performance System laser photo vaporization of the prostate: 3-year results with specific considerations.

Purpose: High-Performance System (HPS) laser photo vaporization of the prostate (PVP) is a widely used procedure nowadays. The safety and efficacy of the procedure has been affirmed in general patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), but data on the safety and efficacy in specific situations, such as in patients with a large prostate, patients taking anticoagulant or 5-alpha reductase inhibitor (5-ARI) medication, and patients with a history of acute urinary retention (AUR) or previous transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP), is lacking. We investigated the safety and efficacy of HPS laser PVP in these unique patient groups.

Affective state-dependent changes in the brain functional network in major depressive disorder.

In major depressive disorder (MDD), as a network-level disease, the pathophysiology would be displayed to a wide extent over the brain. Moreover, the network-wide changes could be dependent on the context of affective processing. In this study, we sought affective state-dependent changes of the brain functional network by applying a graph-theoretical approach to functional magnetic resonance imaging data acquired in 13 patients with MDD and 12 healthy controls who were exposed to video clips inducing the negative, neutral or positive affective state.

Patients with Crohn's disease on anti-tumor necrosis factor therapy are at significant risk of inadequate response to the 23-valent pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine.

Background/aims: The effect of immunosuppressants on the efficacy of a variety of vaccines is a controversial issue in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). In this study we determined whether specific immunosuppressants impair the serological response to the standard 23-valent pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine (PPSV23) in a large cohort of patients with Crohn's disease (CD).

Methods: This was a multi-center, prospective observational study of adult patients with CD at 15 academic teaching hospitals in Korea.

Regulation of ROS-independent ERK signaling rescues replicative cellular senescence in ex vivo expanded human c-kit-positive cardiac progenitor cells.

Backgrounds: Although the rescue of cellular senescence during ex vivo expansion of human-derived cardiac progenitor cells (hCPC) is critical for the application of autologous stem cell therapy in cardiovascular disease, the underlying molecular pathways during replicative senescence in hCPC have not been fully defined. Thus, we examined whether the regulation of mitogen-activated protein kinases activation could facilitate the recovery of human c-kit-positive hCPCs (hCPC(c-kit+)) and whether senescence is reactive oxygen species (ROS)-dependent or -independent.

Methods And Results: To investigate the molecular pathways of replicative cellular senescence, we first evaluated cellular senescence in ex vivo-expanded hCPC(c-kit+) by using senescence-associated β-galactosidase (SA-β-gal) activity with enlarged cytoplasm and observed increased expression of cell senescence-related pivotal molecules, including TP53, cleavage Mdm2 (cMdm2), and Mdm2.

Interstitial lung diseases: respiratory review of 2013.

Interstitial lung diseases are heterogeneous entities with diverse clinical presentations. Among them, idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis and connective tissue disease-associated interstitial lung disease are specific categories that pulmonologists are most likely to encounter in the clinical field. Despite the accumulated data from extensive clinical trial and observations, we continue to have many issues which need to be resolved in this field.

Factors affecting the satisfaction of electronic health records (EHRs) from a physicians' perspectives in implementation.

The Purpose of this study is to investigate factors affecting satisfaction of the Electronic Health Records (EHRs) in Seoul National University of Korea, from a physicians' perspectives. Administration of a survey instrument containing 6 items to cover characteristics of the user's population in hospital. A sample of 327 users was selected including medical sectors for the study.

High glucose-induced oxidative stress promotes autophagy through mitochondrial damage in rat notochordal cells.

Purpose: Diabetes mellitus is associated with an increased risk of intervertebral disc degeneration (IDD). Reactive oxygen species (ROS), oxidative stressors, play a key role in autophagy of diabetes-associated diseases. Mitochondria are known to be the main source of endogenous ROS in most mammalian cell types.

[A case of pneumatosis intestinalis associated with sunitinib treatment for renal cell carcinoma].

Sunitinib as a multitarget tyrosine kinase inhibitor is one of the anti-tumor agents, approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration to use treat gastrointestinal stromal tumor and metastatic renal cell carcinoma. The agent is known to commonly induce adverse reactions such as fatigue, nausea, diarrhea, stomatitis, esophagitis, hypertension, skin toxicity, reduciton in cardiac output of left ventricle, and hypothyroidism. However, it has been reported to rarely induce adverse reactions such as nephrotic syndrome and irreversible reduction in renal functions, and cases of intestinal perforation or pneumatosis interstinalis as such reactions have been consistently reported.

Dose- and time-dependent effect of high glucose concentration on viability of notochordal cells and expression of matrix degrading and fibrotic enzymes.

Purpose: Diabetes mellitus is an important aetiological factor in intervertebral disc degeneration. The disappearance of notochordal cells in the nucleus pulposus is thought to be the starting point for intervertebral disc degeneration. A cellular effect of diabetes mellitus on apoptosis of notochordal cells and intervertebral disc degeneration has been recently reported.

What kind of mentoring do we need? A review of mentoring program studies for medical students.

Nearly every medical school in Korea has a student advisory program, regardless of its form or method, but it is plagued by efficiency. To examine efficient means of delivering student advisory programs, we chose 'mentoring' as one solution and reviewed the concepts of a mentor and mentoring, the qualities and roles of a mentor, and examples of national and international cases of mentoring. The concept of mentoring is diverse, but it connotes and stresses aspects, such as individual guidance, tutoring, life coaching, and role modeling.

Hybrid surgery of multilevel cervical degenerative disc disease : review of literature and clinical results.

Objective: In the present study, we evaluated the effect, safety and radiological outcomes of cervical hybrid surgery (cervical disc prosthesis replacement at one level, and interbody fusion at the other level) on the multilevel cervical degenerative disc disease (DDD).

Methods: Fifty-one patients (mean age 46.7 years) with symptomatic multilevel cervical spondylosis were treated using hybrid surgery (HS).

Prevention of diabetes: a strategic approach for individual patients.

The 'diabetes epidemic' is an important health and socioeconomic problem worldwide. Type 2 diabetes is a chronic disease with gradual deterioration in glucose metabolism which causes multiple systemic complications. Therefore, early intervention in the prediabetic stage is a valuable approach to reduce diabetes development and related complications.

International collaborative faculty development program on simulation-based healthcare education: a report on its successes and challenges.

Purpose: Countries that are less experienced with simulation-based healthcare education (SBHE) often import Western programs to initiate their efforts to deliver effective simulation training. Acknowledging cultural differences, we sought to determine whether faculty development program on SBHE in the United States could be transported successfully to train faculty members in Korea.

Methods: An international, collaborative, multi-professional program from a pre-existing Western model was adapted.
