HPV vaccination status and effectiveness in Korean women with HPV16/18 infection (2010-2021): a retrospective study.

Objective: To evaluate human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine effectiveness in a cohort of Korean women infected with HPV.

Methods: From 2010 to 2021, Korean women aged 20-60 years who diagnosed HPV-positive atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance or low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion were recruited from 6 hospitals. HPV vaccine effectiveness was estimated by observing the differences in pathological and clinical information and experimental results-prevalence, viral load (VL), physical state (PS), and HPV16/18 infection duration-between the vaccinated and unvaccinated groups.

Case report: A case of posterior reversible encephalopathy in postpartum preeclampsia.

Rationale: Posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome is a neurological condition characterized by headache, convulsions, altered consciousness, and visual disturbance with specific radiological features, which is characterized by contrast enhancement in the occipital lobe on T2-weighted image. We report a case of sudden visual impairment of both eyes 6 days after childbirth diagnosed as postpartum preeclampsia and posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome (PRES) through radiological examination.

Patient Concerns: A 31-year-old female patient with headache and visual disturbance visited the clinic.

Impact of Autoimmune Gastritis on Occurrence of Metachronous Gastric Neoplasms after Endoscopic Resection for Gastric Neoplasms.

Gastric cancer is the fifth most common cancer and the third leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide. Autoimmune gastritis (AIG) is characterized by antibody production against the gastric parietal cells, reducing the number of functional parietal cells. It is also associated with an increased susceptibility to gastric neuroendocrine tumors and gastric cancer.

Retinal artery/arteriole occlusion risks after endovascular treatment for unruptured intracranial aneurysm.

Background: To evaluate the association between retinal artery/arteriole occlusion (RAO) and unruptured intracranial aneurysm (UIA).

Methods: Incident UIA patients from a nationwide cohort (n=253 240) were categorised into three groups based on subsequent treatment: observation (n=208 993), microsurgical clipping (n=14 168) and endovascular treatment (EVT) groups (n=30 079). The incidence and the incident time of RAO were analysed.

Quantitative Comparison of Vertebral Structural Changes After Percutaneous Vertebroplasty Between Unilateral Extrapedicular Approach and Bilateral Transpedicular Approach Using Voxel-Based Morphometry.

Objective: To compare unilateral extrapedicular vertebroplasty (UEV) and bilateral transpedicular vertebroplasty (BTV) by quantitatively calculating the structural changes of fractured vertebral body after percutaneous vertebroplasty (PVP) using 3-dimensional voxel-based morphometry (VBM).

Methods: We calculated bone cement volume (BCV); vertebral body volume (VBV); leaked intradiscal BCV; and spatial, symmetric, and even bone cement distribution (BCD) in and out of 222 vertebral bodies treated with 2 different PVPs using VBM and evaluated the incidence of subsequent vertebral compression fracture (SVCF). Statistical analyses were conducted to compare values between the 2 different PVPs.

Backgroud/aims: Several bowel preparation scales have been developed, but they are variably validated to guide clinical practice. The aim of this study was to assess the interobserver reliability between internal and external endoscopists using the Harefield Cleaning Scale (HCS).

Methods: Data was collected from a study evaluating the efficacy of oral sulfate tablets in patients undergoing colonoscopy.

Unravelling interobserver variability in gastrointestinal glandular neoplasia: a contemporary study of US and Korean pathologists.

Aims: Interobserver variability in the assessment of gastric neoplasia biopsies between most Western and Eastern (predominantly represented by Japanese in the literature) pathologists has been documented. It is unknown if such variability exists between the US and Korean pathologists in the current era.

Methods: Ten gastrointestinal (GI) pathologists from the USA (n=5) and South Korea (n=5) evaluated 100 scanned images of gastric (n=50) and colorectal (n=50) neoplasia biopsies and answered multiple questionnaires.

Efficacy of hydroxyapatite-based skull base reconstruction for intraoperative high-flow cerebrospinal fluid leakage performed by less-experienced surgeons.

Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leakage after endoscopic skull base surgery remains a challenge despite multilayer reconstruction including nasoseptal flap (NSF) has become a standard technique. Injectable hydroxyapatite (HXA) has shown promising results to prevent CSF leakage. This study aimed to validate the efficacy of HXA-based skull base reconstruction performed by less-experienced neurosurgeons who had short-term clinical experiences as independent surgeons.

The Awareness and Experience About Endoscopic Adverse Events Among South Korean Endoscopists.

Background/aims: The number of endoscopic procedures and related adverse events is increasing. We investigated South Korean endoscopists' awareness and experience of endoscopic adverse events.

Materials And Methods: We used Google Forms to conduct an online questionnaire survey among South Korean endoscopists from December 11 to 29, 2020.

Different neuroprognostication thresholds of neuron-specific enolase in shockable and non-shockable out-of-hospital cardiac arrest: a prospective multicenter observational study in Korea (the KORHN-PRO registry).

Background: Serum neuron-specific enolase (NSE) is the only recommended biomarker for multimodal prognostication in postcardiac arrest patients, but low sensitivity of absolute NSE threshold limits its utility. This study aimed to evaluate the prognostic performance of serum NSE for poor neurologic outcome in out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) survivors based on their initial rhythm and to determine the NSE cutoff values with false positive rate (FPR) < 1% for each group.

Methods: This study included OHCA survivors who received targeted temperature management (TTM) and had serum NSE levels measured at 48 h after return of spontaneous circulation in the Korean Hypothermia Network, a prospective multicenter registry from 22 university-affiliated teaching hospitals in South Korea between October 2015 and December 2018.

Deep Learning-Based Computational Cytopathologic Diagnosis of Metastatic Breast Carcinoma in Pleural Fluid.

A Pleural effusion cytology is vital for treating metastatic breast cancer; however, concerns have arisen regarding the low accuracy and inter-observer variability in cytologic diagnosis. Although artificial intelligence-based image analysis has shown promise in cytopathology research, its application in diagnosing breast cancer in pleural fluid remains unexplored. To overcome these limitations, we evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of an artificial intelligence-based model using a large collection of cytopathological slides, to detect the malignant pleural effusion cytology associated with breast cancer.

Impact of radiation on immune cells in patients with low-grade brain tumor: Identifying critical factors affecting lymphopenia and neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio.

Purpose: Studies about the effect of radiation therapy (RT) on immune cells are usually limited to a high-grade glioma mostly exposed to chemotherapy and a high dose of steroid which also could affect immune cells. The purpose of this retrospective analysis of low-grade brain tumor patients treated by RT alone is to determine significant factors influencing neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), absolute neutrophil counts (ANC), and absolute lymphocyte counts (ALC).

Materials And Methods: A total of 41 patients who received RT between 2007 and 2020 were analyzed.

COVID-19 vaccine acceptance and related behavioral and psychological characteristics in individuals with mental disorders in Korea.

Objective: This study aimed to investigate COVID-19 vaccine acceptance and related factors in individuals with mental disorders in Korea.

Methods: We surveyed 572 individuals with mental disorders about their attitudes toward COVID-19 vaccination using a 7-item self-rating questionnaire on vaccine acceptance and hesitancy. We categorized the respondents into groups based on their level of vaccine acceptance using hierarchical clustering.

Physical distancing and emergency medical services utilization after self-harm in Korea during the early COVID-19 pandemic: A nationwide quantitative study.

Background: People experienced various stress and psychological responses to the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. This study aimed to examine the changes in emergency medical services (EMSs) utilization by self-harm patients in early pandemic and the impacts of physical distancing measures on the EMSs utilization by self-harm patients.

Methods: Data for all patients presenting to emergency departments (EDs) after self-harm injuries including self-poisoning were collected from the National ED Information System (NEDIS).

Precise evaluation of the feeders, fistulous points, and draining veins plays a key role for successful embolization of intracranial dural arteriovenous fistulas (DAVF). Digital subtraction angiography (DSA) is a gold standard diagnostic tool to assess the exact angioarchitecture of DAVFs. With the advent of new image postprocessing techniques, we lately have been able to apply image fusion techniques with two different image sets obtained with flat panel detector rotational angiography.

Postoperative rehabilitation using a digital healthcare system in patients with total knee arthroplasty: a randomized controlled trial.

Introduction: Digital healthcare systems based on augmented reality (AR) show promise for postoperative rehabilitation. We compared the effectiveness of AR-based rehabilitation and conventional rehabilitation after total knee arthroplasty (TKA).

Materials And Methods: We randomly allocated 56 participants to digital healthcare rehabilitation group (DR group) and conventional rehabilitation group (CR group).

Clinical and Radiological Outcomes of Vertebral Artery Dissecting Aneurysms Treated with Endovascular Treatments: A 12-year Single-Center Experience.

Objective: We aimed to compare the clinical and radiological outcomes of vertebral artery dissecting aneurysms (VADAs) stratified using different endovascular treatment methods.

Methods: We retrospectively reviewed 116 patients with VADAs treated at a single tertiary institute between September 2008 and December 2020. We analyzed and compared the clinical and radiological parameters according to different treatment methods.

The benefit of planned dialysis to early survival on hemodialysis versus peritoneal dialysis: a nationwide prospective multicenter study in Korea.

Optimal preparation is recommended for patients with advanced chronic kidney disease to minimize complications during dialysis initiation. This study evaluated the effects of planned dialysis initiation on survival in patients undergoing incident hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis. Patients newly diagnosed with end-stage kidney disease who started dialysis were enrolled in a multicenter prospective cohort study in Korea.

Molecular mechanisms of mitochondrial DNA release and activation of the cGAS-STING pathway.

In addition to constituting the genetic material of an organism, DNA is a tracer for the recognition of foreign pathogens and a trigger of the innate immune system. cGAS functions as a sensor of double-stranded DNA fragments and initiates an immune response via the adaptor protein STING. The cGAS-STING pathway not only defends cells against various DNA-containing pathogens but also modulates many pathological processes caused by the immune response to the ectopic localization of self-DNA, such as cytosolic mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) and extranuclear chromatin.

Blockade of Activin Receptor IIB Protects Arthritis Pathogenesis by Non-Amplification of Activin A-ACVR2B-NOX4 Axis Pathway.

Although activin receptor IIB (ACVR2B) is emerging as a novel pathogenic receptor, its ligand and assembled components (or assembly) are totally unknown in the context of osteoarthritis (OA) pathogenesis. The present results suggest that upregulation of ACVR2B and its assembly could affect osteoarthritic cartilage destruction. It is shown that the ACVR2B ligand, activin A, regulates catabolic factor expression through ACVR2B in OA development.
