When a body is discovered at a crime or murder scene, it is crucial to examine the body and estimate its postmortem interval (PMI). Accurate estimation of PMI is vital for identifying suspects and providing clues to resolve the case. MicroRNAs (miRNAs or miRs) are small non-coding RNAs that remain relatively stable in the cell nucleus even after death-related changes occur.

In the biosensor field, the accurate detection of contagious disease has become one of the most important research topics in the post-pandemic period. However, conventional contagious viral biosensors normally require chemical modifications to introduce the probe molecules to nucleic acids such as a redox indicator, fluorescent dye, or quencher for biosensing. To avoid this complex chemical modification, in this research, mismatched DNA with an intercalated metal ion complex (MIMIC) is employed as the probe sequence.

Introduction: Small cell lung cancer (SCLC) is known for its high proliferative rate and poor prognosis. Although Delta-like ligand 3 (DLL3) is specifically expressed on the surface of SCLC, the association of DLL3 with prognosis in SCLC remains uncertain. Hence, we aimed to evaluate prognostic role of DLL3 in extensive stage of SCLC treated with first-line chemotherapy.

Improved survival with second-line hepatic arterial infusion chemotherapy after atezolizumab-bevacizumab failure in hepatocellular carcinoma.

Front Oncol

December 2024

Division of Hepatology, Department of Internal Medicine, Seoul St. Mary's Hospital, College of Medicine, The Catholic University of Korea, Seoul, Republic of Korea.

Superimposed Wavefront Imaging of Diffraction-enhanced X-rays: sparsity-aware CT reconstruction from limited-view projections.

Int J Comput Assist Radiol Surg

December 2024

High Energy Accelerator Research Organization, Tsukuba, Ibaraki, 305-0801, Japan.

Purpose: In this paper, we describe an algebraic reconstruction algorithm with a total variation regularization (ART + TV) based on the Superimposed Wavefront Imaging of Diffraction-enhanced X-rays (SWIDeX) method to effectively reduce the number of projections required for differential phase-contrast CT reconstruction.

Methods: SWIDeX is a technique that uses a Laue-case Si analyzer with closely spaced scintillator to generate second derivative phase-contrast images with high contrast of a subject. When the projections obtained by this technique are reconstructed, a Laplacian phase-contrast tomographic image with higher sparsity than the original physical distribution of the subject can be obtained.

Department of Pediatrics (T.S., J.-R.M., Y.H.C., J.M.S., J. Kaplan, A.C., L.W., D.G., S.T., S.I., M.D., W.Y., A.L.M., M.R.).

Background: Computational modeling indicated that pathological high shear stress (HSS; 100 dyn/cm) is generated in pulmonary arteries (PAs; 100-500 µm) in congenital heart defects causing PA hypertension (PAH) and in idiopathic PAH with occlusive vascular remodeling. Endothelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EndMT) is a feature of PAH. We hypothesize that HSS induces EndMT, contributing to the initiation and progression of PAH.

The functional specialization of CD4 T lymphocytes into various subtypes, including T1 and T cells, is crucial for effective immune responses. T cells facilitate B cell differentiation within germinal centers, while T1 cells are vital for cell-mediated immunity against intracellular pathogens. Integrin α4, a cell surface adhesion molecule, plays significant roles in cell migration and co-stimulatory signaling.

Laryngeal disease classification using voice data: Octave-band vs. mel-frequency filters.

Heliyon

December 2024

Department of Industrial and Data Engineering, Hongik University, Seoul, South Korea.

Introduction: Laryngeal cancer diagnosis relies on specialist examinations, but non-invasive methods using voice data are emerging with artificial intelligence (AI) advancements. Mel Frequency Cepstral Coefficients (MFCCs) are widely used for voice analysis, but Octave Frequency Spectrum Energy (OFSE) may offer better accuracy in detecting subtle voice changes.

Problem Statement: Accurate early diagnosis of laryngeal cancer through voice data is challenging with current methods like MFCC.

Diagnostic efficacy of body roll test for lateral canal BPPV: A randomized controlled study.

Clin Exp Otorhinolaryngol

December 2024

Department of Otorhinolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, Incheon St. Mary's Hospital, College of medicine, The Catholic University of Korea, Seoul, Republic of Korea.

Background: Lateral semicircular canal BPPV (LC-BPPV) is diagnosed by the head roll test (HRT), in which the head is rotated to move particles in the lateral canal, causing nystagmus. The body roll test (BRT) is performed in a rolling position with the body and head together, which has the advantage of safely rotating the head at the correct angle in both directions. This study aims to assess the diagnostic utility of the body roll test (BRT).
