The interaction of reactive oxygen species with cell membrane lipids is usually considered in the context of lipid peroxidation in the nonpolar component of the membrane. In this work, for the first time, data were obtained indicating that damage to human cell membranes can occur in the polar part of lysophospholipids at the interface with the aqueous environment due to free radical fragmentation (FRF) processes. FRF products, namely 1-hexadecanoyloxyacetone (PAc) and 1-octadecanoyloxyacetone (SAc), were identified in human serum, and a GC-MS method was developed to quantify PAc and SAc.

Uncontrollable dendrite growth and corrosion induced by reactive water molecules and sulfate ions (SO) seriously hindered the practical application of aqueous zinc ion batteries (AZIBs). Here we construct artificial solid electrolyte interfaces (SEIs) realized by sodium and calcium bentonite with a layered structure anchored to anodes (NB@Zn and CB@Zn). This artificial SEI layer functioning as a protective coating to isolate activated water molecules, provides high-speed transport channels for Zn, and serves as an ionic sieve to repel negatively charged anions while attracting positively charged cations.

Nanoformulations for combining chemotherapy, chemodynamic therapy, and photothermal therapy have enormous potential in tumor treatment. Coating nanoformulations with cell membranes endows them with homologous cellular mimicry, enabling nanoformulations to acquire new functions and properties, including homologous targeting and long circulation in vivo, and can enhance internalization by homologous cancer cells. Herein, we fused multifunctional biomimetic nanoformulations based on Cu-doped zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8).

Human Wharton's jelly mesenchymal stem cells (hWJ-MSCs) are of great interest in tissue engineering. We obtained hWJ-MSCs from four patients, and then we stimulated their chondrogenic phenotype formation in vitro by adding resveratrol (during cell expansion) and a canonical Wnt pathway activator, LiCl, as well as a Rho-associated protein kinase inhibitor, Y27632 (during differentiation). The effects of the added reagents on the formation of hWJ-MSC sheets destined to repair osteochondral injuries were investigated.

In this study, ZnS capped Cu-In-S (ZCIS) quantum dots doped with Mn ions are synthesized by a thermal injection method, with luminescence covering almost the entire visible area. The large Stokes shift effectively inhibits the self-absorption effect under luminescence, and the quantum yield of ZCIS quantum dots increased from 38% to 50% after ZnS capping and further to 69% after doping with Mn. First, red-, yellow-, and blue-emitting quantum dots were synthesized and then, polychromatic ensembles were obtained by mixing the trichromatic quantum dots in a different ratio.

Here we discuss fluorescent properties of graphene quantum dots (GQDs) interacting with the membranes of red blood cells. We report the results of spectroscopic, microscopic, and photon-counting measurements of the GQDs in different surroundings for uncovering specific features of the GQD fluorescence, and describe two observed phenomena important for implementation of the GQDs as fluorescent labels and agents for drug delivery. Firstly, the GQDs can suffer from photodegradation but also can be stabilized in the presence of antioxidants (reduced glutathione, N-acetylcysteine, or 1,4-hydroquinone).

Smart thermoresponsive polymers have long attracted attention as materials of a great potential for biomedical applications, mainly for drug delivery, tissue engineering and wound dressing, with a special interest to injectable hydrogels. Poly-N-isopropylacrylamide (PNIPAM) is the most important synthetic thermoresponsive polymer due to its physiologically relevant transition temperature. However, the use of unmodified PNIPAM encounters such problems as low biodegradability, low drug loading capacity, slow response to thermal stimuli, and insufficient mechanical robustness.

The visible-light-induced cationic polymerization of isobutylene with a dimanganese decacarbonyl (Mn(CO))/diphenyl iodonium hexafluorophosphate (PhIPF) photoinitiating system in a CHCl/-hexane mixture at -30 °C was reported. It was shown that polymerization is initiated by chloromethylisobutyl carbocations generated by the oxidation of chloromethylisobutyl radicals by PhIPF. The latter are formed via chlorine abstraction from solvent (CHCl) by MnCO· radicals, which are generated by the photoinduced decomposition of Mn(CO), followed by single isobutylene addition.

A critical analysis of the known theories of functioning of H-selective electrodes (H-SEs) based on neutral amine-type carriers is given. A model of specific ion association is proposed, according to which, in membranes plasticized with 2-nitrophenyloctyl ether, the protonated ionophore and cation-exchanger form much stronger ion pairs with inorganic ions extracted from the sample solution than with each other, and simple equations that describe the lower and upper limit detection (pH and pH) are obtained. A feasible and reliable method for quantifying the p values of ionophores in the membrane phase from potentiometric data is substantiated.
