Background: The Abdominal Compartment Society (WSACS) established consensus definitions and recommendations for the management of intra-abdominal hypertension (IAH) and abdominal compartment syndrome (ACS) in 2006, and they were last updated in 2013. The WSACS conducted an international survey between 2022 and 2023 to seek the agreement of healthcare practitioners (HCPs) worldwide on current and new candidate statements that may be used for future guidelines.

Methods: A self-administered, online cross-sectional survey was conducted under the auspices of the WSACS to assess the level of agreement among HCPs over current and new candidate statements.

Objective: Common peroneal (fibular) neuropathy is the most common mononeuropathy of the lower extremity. Despite this, there are surprisingly few studies on the topic, and a knowledge gap remains in the literature. As one attempts to address this knowledge gap, a core outcome set (COS) is needed to guide the planning phases of future studies to allow synthesis and comparability of these studies.

Article Synopsis
  • The ACR TI-RADS risk stratification system helps evaluate thyroid nodules by aiming to reduce unnecessary biopsies while maintaining specificity, focusing on the relationship between ultrasound findings and malignancy risks.
  • This study analyzed data from 212 thyroid ultrasound-guided fine needle aspirations (FNABs) to correlate ultrasonographic findings with cytopathology results from The Bethesda System, specifically analyzing nodules with low and high risk of malignancy.
  • Key findings indicated that certain ultrasound characteristics, like solid composition and irregular margins, were more prevalent in nodules with a higher risk of malignancy, suggesting that these features could guide clinical decisions regarding further evaluation or intervention.

Article Synopsis
  • The SCMR Registry is a comprehensive database that collects clinical data from cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) exams, supporting research on treatment outcomes and advancing machine learning in cardiovascular health.
  • As of now, it contains data from over 154,000 CMR scans across 20 sites in the U.S., including a vast 100 terabytes of imaging data, revealing demographics such as an average patient age of 58 and a notable 8% mortality rate in the studied cohort.
  • Significant findings indicate a higher mortality risk associated with certain indicators, such as a left ventricular ejection fraction below 35% and specific wall motion abnormalities, showcasing the registry’s potential to enhance clinical insight and improve patient outcomes.

Dear Editor, We have read the article "The usefulness of the genetic panel in the classification and refinement of diagnostic accuracy of Mexican patients with Marfan syndrome and other connective tissue disorders", recently published in your esteemed journal. We are a team dedicated to diagnosing, approaching, and managing patients with connective tissue disorders, particularly hypermobile spectrum disorders (HSD) and Ehlers-Danlos syndromes (EDS). We appreciate the research group's effort to address the complexity of connective tissue disorders using a multi-panel genetic approach and their analysis of genotype-phenotype associations in a cohort of Mexican patients.

Purpose: There is a lack of evidence for treatment of some conditions including complication management, suboptimal initial weight loss, recurrent weight gain, or worsening of a significant obesity complication after one anastomosis gastric bypass (OAGB). This study was designed to respond to the existing lack of agreement and to provide a valuable resource for clinicians by employing an expert-modified Delphi consensus method.

Methods: Forty-eight recognized bariatric surgeons from 28 countries participated in the modified Delphi consensus to vote on 64 statements in two rounds.

Attempts at body contour modifications have led to the use of different alloplastic materials that can irreversibly damage health and risk patients' lives. These modeling substances can induce a general autoimmune inflammatory response, producing a very heterogeneous clinical spectrum ranging from mild and severe systemic to local symptoms that sometimes affect peripheral nerves. We report a unique case of a tumor-like sciatic nerve impairment produced months after the injection of a modeling substance into the buttocks for esthetic purposes.

Multisystem inflammatory syndrome in adults (MIS-A) is recognised as an infrequent complication of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). This syndrome occurs following COVID-19 infection in some individuals and is characterised by inflammation of multiple organ systems, such as the heart, liver, bowel, and lymph nodes. Cytomegalovirus (CMV) viraemia is associated primarily with immunosuppression.

Cat-scratch disease (CSD) is a self-limited zoonotic infection transmitted by felines caused by the Gram-negative bacillus . It usually presents with lymphadenopathy and constitutional symptoms that resolve within eight weeks, with, or without antibiotic treatment. The diagnosis is made by serology, molecular diagnosis in a biopsy, or a positive culture.

Objective: When considering traumatic brachial plexus and upper extremity nerve injuries, iatrogenic nerve injuries, and nontraumatic nerve injuries, brachial plexus and upper extremity nerve injuries are commonly encountered in clinical practice. Despite this, data synthesis and comparison of available studies are difficult. This is at least in part due to the lack of standardization in reporting and a lack of a core outcome set (COS).

Background: Metabolic and bariatric surgery (MBS) is the preferred method to achieve significant weight loss in patients with Obesity Class V (BMI > 60 kg/m). However, there is no consensus regarding the best procedure(s) for this population. Additionally, these patients will likely have a higher risk of complications and mortality.

Perception and Recognition of Clinical Medical Physicist Roles and Responsibilities by Specialist Physician Staff: The First Mexican Survey.

J Med Phys

December 2023

Facultad de Matemática, Física, Astronomía y Computación, Universidad Nacional de Córdoba, Cordoba, Argentina, Mexico.

Introduction: Although medical physics as a profession is recognized as part of the health-care professional workforce by the International Labor Organization, in the Mexican context, the figure of the medical physicist (MP) is often inappropriately associated solely with technical work, leading to perception, recognition, and salary implications. The aim of this study was to explore the perception of medical specialists regarding the role and responsibilities of MPs in clinical practice in Mexico.

Methods: A national survey was answered by medical personnel, ranging from residents to qualified specialists in November 2019.

Background And Objectives: Lumbosacral plexus schwannomas (LSPSs) are benign, slow-growing tumors that arise from the myelin sheath of the lumbar or sacral plexus nerves. Surgery is the treatment of choice for symptomatic LSPSs. Conventional retroperitoneal or transabdominal approaches provide wide exposure of the lesion but are often associated with complications in the abdominal wall, lumbar or sacral plexus, ureter, and intraperitoneal organs.

Reduced Levels of Selenium and Thioredoxin Reductase in the Thoracic Aorta Could Contribute to Aneurysm Formation in Patients with Marfan Syndrome.

Int J Mol Sci

June 2023

Department of Physiology, Instituto Nacional de Cardiología Ignacio Chávez, Juan Badiano 1, Sección XVI, Tlalpan, México City 14080, Mexico.

Marfan syndrome (MFS) is an autosomal dominant disorder caused by a heterozygous mutation of the FBN1 gene. MFS patients present oxidative stress that disturbs redox homeostasis. Redox homeostasis depends in part on the enzymatic antioxidant system, which includes thioredoxin reductase (TrxR) and glutathione peroxidases (GPx), both of which require an adequate concentration of selenium (Se).

  • MINOCA (Myocardial Infarction with Non Obstructive Coronary Arteries) occurs when patients show symptoms similar to a heart attack but have clear coronary arteries upon angiography.
  • Initially seen as less serious, MINOCA is now recognized to lead to significant health issues and higher death rates compared to the general population.
  • Cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (CMR) is crucial for diagnosing MINOCA and distinguishing it from similar conditions, as highlighted in demographic and clinical evaluations in recent guidelines.
