Background And Importance: Dural arteriovenous fistulas (dAVFs) with cortical venous reflux (CVR) are associated with a higher incidence of intracranial hemorrhage (ICH). We report a rare case of a complex torcular dAVF with severe cortical veins (CV) varix leading to extensive bilateral cerebral hemorrhages. This discovery suggests a potential new subtype of dAVF.

Background: Ovarian cancer (OC), one of the most prevalent gynecological malignancies, is characterized by late detection and dismal prognosis. Recent studies show that long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) in competitive endogenous RNA (ceRNA) networks influence immune infiltration and cancer prognosis. However, the function of lncRNA in OC immune infiltration and prognosis remains unclear.

To determine the cortical mechanism that underlies the cognitive impairment and motor disability in hereditary spastic paraplegia (HSP), nine HSP patients from a Chinese family were examined using clinical evaluation, cognitive screening, and genetic testing. Controls were matched healthy subjects. White-matter fractional anisotropy (FA), mean diffusivity (MD), axial diffusivity (AD), and radial diffusivity (RD; tract-based spatial statistics), cortical thickness (FreeSurfer), and subcortical gray matter (FIRST) based on T1-weighted MRI and diffusion tensor imaging were analyzed.

Background: Phosphoribosylaminoimidazole carboxylase, phosphoribosylaminoimidazole succinocarboxamide synthetase (PAICS), an enzyme required for de novo purine biosynthesis, is associated with and involved in tumorigenesis. This study aimed to evaluate the role of PAICS in human breast cancer, which remains the most frequently diagnosed cancer and the leading cause of cancer-related death among women in less developed countries.

Results: Lentivirus-based short hairpin RNA targeting PAICS specifically depleted its endogenous expression in ZR-75-30 and MDA-MB-231 breast cancer cells.

The mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) and phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K) pathways are activated during pathogenesis of gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs). Forkhead box protein O1 (FOXO1) is a transcription factor regulated by the MAPK and PI3K pathways and is associated with multiple metabolic reactions. The present study aims to investigate the association of FOXO1 with cell proliferation and apoptosis in the cell line, GIST-T1.

Background: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by progressive cognitive and memory impairment. It is the most common neurological disease that causes dementia. Soluble amyloid-beta oligomers (AβO) in blood or cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) are the pathogenic biomarker correlated with AD.

Objective: To investigate the effect of Notch1 gene silencing by RNA interference on oncogenicity of multiple myeloma cells in NOD/SCID mice.

Methods: Targeting-silenced Notch1 gene was target-sotenced by transfection of Notch1-shRNA in multiple myeloma RPMI8226 cells of NOD/SCID mouse myeloma models, and the change of the volume and speed of oncogenicity in myeloma mouse models were evaluated after Notch1 gene silencing, and ELISA was used to detect the serum expression level of IL-6 and VEGF in the tumor-bearing mice.

Results: After Notch1 gene was silenced by Notch1-shRNA, the speed of tumor formation was significantly inhibited and the tumor volume was reduced in the tumor-bearing mice, as compared with the control group, and the difference was statistically significant (P<0.

Department of Biomaterials, College of Materials, Xiamen University, Xiamen 361005, China. Electronic address:

Conducting polymer polypyrrole (PPy) possesses good biocompatibility and conductivity and has been used as functional coatings in bone tissue regeneration. In this study, a cholic acid doped PPy nanowires (PPy NWs) coating was electrochemically polymerized on the surface of titanium (Ti). The porous intertwined PPy NWs coating exhibited excellent electrical conductivity and electrochemical activity, better hydrophilicity and higher surface energy.

Background: Structural and functional networks can be reorganized to adjust to environmental pressures and physiologic changes in the adult brain, but such processes remain unclear in prolonged adaptation to high-altitude (HA) hypoxia. This study aimed to characterize the interhemispheric functionally and structurally coupled modifications in the brains of adult HA immigrants.

Methods: We performed resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) in 16 adults who had immigrated to the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (2300-4400 m) for 2 years and in 16 age-matched sea-level (SL) controls.

Scaffolds made by biomaterials offer favorite environment for cell grow and show a wide potential application in tissue engineering. Novel biocompatibility materials polylatic acid (PLA) nanofiber membranes with favorable biocompatibility and good mechanical strength could serve as an innovative tissue engineering scaffold. Sodium alginate (SA) could be used in biomedical areas because of its anti-bacterial property, hydrophilicity and biocompatibility.

Plaque-reduction assays have been used to detect varicella-zoster virus (VZV)-neutralizing antibodies in sera for many decades. The current study characterized the mouse monoclonal antibody (MAb) 18A10, specific for VZV envelope glycoprotein K (gK), and applied this antibody to a new type of neutralization assay in the VZV field. The procedure is called the neutralization enzyme-linked immunosorbent spot (N-ELISPOT) assay and evolved from the VZV immunoperoxidase focus assay.

Aim: As the major atheroprotective particle in plasma, high-density lipoprotein(HDL) is oxidized during atherosclerotic processes. Oxidized HDL(ox-HDL) may lose its cardioprotective properties and develop a proinflammatory and proatherogenic phenotype. The proliferation and migration of vascular smooth muscle cells(VSMCs) play a crucial role in atherogenesis.

Type II interleukin-1 receptor (IL-1RII) is a non-signaling decoy receptor that blocks the activity of interleukin-1 (IL-1), a pro-inflammatory cytokine involved in experimental autoimmune myocarditis (EAM). The aim of this study was to examine the effects of hydrodynamics-based delivery of a recombinant plasmid encoding IL-1RII-Ig and to elucidate the role of IL-1RII in EAM rats. Rats were immunized on day 0 and injected with a recombinant plasmid encoding IL-1RII-Ig or pCAGGS-SP-Ig (control plasmid) on day 6.

Aim: To investigate the diverse characteristics of different pathological gradings of gastric adenocarcinoma (GA) using tumor-related genes.

Methods: GA tissues in different pathological gradings and normal tissues were subjected to tissue arrays. Expressions of 15 major tumor-related genes were detected by RNA in situ hybridization along with 3' terminal digoxin-labeled anti-sense single stranded oligonucleotide and locked nucleic acid modifying probe within the tissue array.
