This study aimed to quantify fundus microvascular alterations in patients requiring revascularization for coronary heart disease (CHD) using swept-source optical coherence tomography angiography (SS-OCTA) and to investigate the correlation between these alterations and the severity of coronary artery lesions. SS-OCTA was employed to assess the fundus neurovascular parameters of all participants, while the Gensini score was utilized to gauge the severity of coronary artery lesions in observation group. A total of 98 participants (49 CHD patients and 49 controls) were included.

Acetylation of E2F1 at K125 facilitates cell apoptosis under serum stress.

Transl Oncol

December 2024

Department of General Surgery, Sanmen People's Hospital, Sanmen 317100, China. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • E2F1 is a vital transcription factor involved in regulating the cell cycle and is often found at high levels in cancer cells.
  • Recent research indicates that E2F1 can also trigger apoptosis (cell death) under stress conditions, posing a dual role in cell survival and death.
  • This study reveals that acetylation of E2F1 at K125 during serum stress enhances its ability to promote the expression of Fas and BAX, leading to the activation of caspase-3 and apoptosis in liver cancer cells.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to examine changes in retinal and choroidal blood vessels in patients with coronary artery stenosis using optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA).
  • It involved 100 participants, split into an observation group (50 patients with angina diagnosed with coronary artery stenosis) and a control group (50 healthy adults), to assess vessel density parameters.
  • Results showed that the coronary artery stenosis group had lower densities in key retinal vessels and a higher FAZ perimeter, making the FAZ perimeter a significant predictor of coronary artery stenosis risk.

Varicose veins in the lower extremities significantly impairs patients' quality of life, highlighting the importance of targeted quality of life assessments for specific diseases. The Aberdeen Varicose Vein Questionnaire (AVVQ) was specifically designed to assess the impact of lower extremity varicose veins on quality of life. This study comprised two phases: in the first phase, the AVVQ was translated and culturally adapted, and the second phase was an evaluation of the psychometric characteristics of the Chinese version of AVVQ in 328 patients with varicose veins of lower extremities.

The causal effect of serum amino acids on the risk of prostate cancer: a two-sample mendelian randomization study.

Sci Rep

November 2024

Department of Urology, the Affiliated Xuzhou Municipal Hospital of Xuzhou Medical University, Xuzhou No. 1 People's Hospital, Xuzhou, 221004, PR China.

Prostate cancer (PCa) is the second most common malignancy affecting men globally. Recent advances in metabolomics have highlighted significant alterations in specific amino acid (AA) metabolism linked to PCa, indicating their potential utility in diagnosis and therapy. However, no direct causal association between serum AA levels and PCa risk has been established.

IL-6 Exacerbates Oxidative Damage of RPE Cells by Indirectly Destabilizing the mRNA of DNA Repair Genes.

Inflammation

November 2024

Xuzhou Key Laboratory of Ophthalmology, The Affiliated Xuzhou Municipal Hospital of Xuzhou Medical University, Xuzhou First People's Hospital, Eye Institute of Xuzhou, Xuzhou, 221100, China.

Chronic inflammation has been associated with the progression of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and diabetic retinopathy (DR), and the levels of various inflammatory factors are significantly increased in intraocular fluids of patients with AMD and DR. Therefore, elucidating the roles of inflammatory factors in the oxidative damage of RPE cells will help uncover the pathogenesis of AMD and DR. We have previously demonstrated that E2F1 plays an important role in the antioxidant capacity of RPE cells.

Transformation of epithelial to mesenchymal (EMT) is an important event in the process of tumor initiation, invasion and metastasis. Circulating tumor cells (CTCs) are one kind of important markers in the field of liquid tumor biopsy, whose number and phenotype represent the occurrence and progression of tumors. Therefore, it is our interest to investigate the epithelial mesenchymal transition process occurring on the surface of CTCs.

  • The study analyzed vision health among adolescents in the Western Pacific Region from 1990 to 2019 using Global Burden of Disease data.
  • Results indicated an overall increase in rates of blindness and vision loss during the study period, particularly notable in China, but a decline was observed starting in 2017.
  • The findings highlight a need for greater focus on adolescent eye health in the region, especially given the discrepancies in health trends between different countries.

Article Synopsis
  • Severe osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures (SOVCF) often lead to additional injuries, specifically endplatedisc complex (EDC) injuries, complicating treatment options like percutaneous kyphoplasty (PKP), which provides pain relief but may not effectively restore vertebral height.
  • This study compared the effectiveness of a newer treatment called percutaneous functional spinal unit cementoplasty (PFSUP) against PKP in treating SOVCF complicated by EDC injury by evaluating pain relief and quality of life through patient surveys, alongside imaging studies to assess any complications like cement leakage.
  • Results showed that while PFSUP took longer and involved more radiation exposure, it had a significantly lower rate of cement leakage compared to PKP

  • A study conducted in ten Chinese cities from 2013 to 2023 analyzed over 418,000 outpatient visits for conjunctivitis in children, revealing inconclusive evidence regarding the impact of ambient gaseous pollutants on the condition.
  • The research found that higher daily concentrations of carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide, sulfur dioxide, and ozone were associated with increases in pediatric conjunctivitis visits, with boys and younger children being more affected.
  • The study suggests implementing public health interventions to mitigate the risks associated with air pollution, especially during the summer months when associations were stronger.

Projections from the ventral tegmental area to zona incerta regulate fear generalization in a mouse model of PTSD.

Brain Res Bull

October 2024

Jiangsu Province Key Laboratory of Brain Disease and Bioinformation, Research Center for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Xuzhou Medical University, 209 Tongshan Road, Xuzhou, Jiangsu 221004, China. Electronic address:

Generalized fear is a maladaptive behavior in which non-threatening stimuli elicit a fearful response. The ventral tegmental area (VTA) has been demonstrated to play important roles in fear response and fear memory generalization, but the precious neural circuit mechanism is still unclear. Here, we demonstrated that VTA-zona incerta (ZI) glutamatergic projection is involved in regulating high-intensity threatening training induced generalization and anxiety.
