Background: To explore the prognostic role of FDG PET/CT maximal standard uptake values of metastatic lesions (SUVmax-M) in patients with de novo metastatic nasopharyngeal carcinoma (mNPC) following palliative chemotherapy and locoregional radiotherapy (LRRT).

Methods: We retrospectively collected the information of 86 eligible patients between Jan 2012 and Oct 2020. All the parameters involving SUVmax and serum lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) at diagnosis were evaluated and cutoff values were determined by the maximum log-rank statistic method.

Glucoraphanin, rich in broccoli seed extract (BSE), is generally inert but can be biotransformed into active sulforaphane by gut bacteria. This study aimed to screen probiotics with glucoraphanin-metabolizing ability and explore the effect of a combination of strain and BSE on colitis induced by dextran sulfate sodium (DSS) in mice. CCFM1206 was isolated from healthy adult feces.

Different Effects of Different Strains on DSS-Induced Colitis.

Int J Mol Sci

November 2022

State Key Laboratory of Food Science and Technology, Jiangnan University, Wuxi 214122, China.

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a worldwide chronic intestinal inflammatory immune-related disease. In this study, mice with dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced colitis were used to evaluate the effect of on colitis. The results revealed that CCFM137 and FAHWH11L56 show potential for relieving colitis symptoms, while FGSYC48L79 did not show a protective effect.

Background: Broccoli has received widespread attention because of its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. The present study aimed to explore the composition of broccoli seed extract (BSE) and its effect on colitis induced by dextran sulfate sodium (DSS).

Results: BSE mainly comprises glucoraphanin and polysaccharides composed of arabinose, galactose, glucose and mannose.

Background: NF-κB signaling is widely linked to the pathogenesis and treatment resistance in cancers. Increasing attention has been paid to its anti-oncogenic roles, due to its key functions in cellular senescence and the senescence-associated secretory phenotype (SASP). Therefore, thoroughly understanding the function and regulation of NF-κB in cancers is necessary prior to the application of NF-κB inhibitors.

Background: Clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) is characterized by the accumulation of lipid-reactive oxygen species. Ferroptosis, due to the lipid peroxidation, has been reported to be strongly correlated with tumorigenesis and progression. However, the functions of the ferroptosis process in ccRCC remain unclear.

Patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) have been found to have decreased immune function. Selenium (Se) is an essential trace element that is beneficial for human health, which has a significant stimulating effect on immune function. We compared the effects of different Se forms on the alleviation of colitis in DSS-induced mice.

Submucosal Tunneling Endoscopic Resection for Submucosal Tumors in the Proximal Esophagus.

J Am Coll Surg

June 2022

From the Endoscopy Center, Department of Gastroenterology (Chen, Lian, A-P Xu, Leng, M-D Xu), Shanghai East Hospital, Tongji University School of Medicine, Shanghai, China.

Background: Submucosal tunneling endoscopic resection (STER) is widely applied for treatment of gastrointestinal submucosal tumors (SMTs) originating from the muscularis propria layer. However, the tumor location within the proximal esophagus makes STER a challenge for the endoscopists. The aim of this study was to summarize the technique skill and evaluate the outcomes of proximal esophageal STER.

Background: Recently, increasing evidence has indicated that platelet-activating factor acetylhydrolase 1b catalytic subunit 3 (PAFAH1B3) plays an important role in several cancers. However, its role in lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) has not been reported until now.

Methods: The expression of PAFAH1B3 in LUAD was determined by using the Gene Expression Profiling Interactive Analysis (GEPIA) database and real-time PCR (RT-PCR), western blot and immunohistochemical (IHC) analyses.

Introduction: We aimed to explore the real-world clinical application value and challenges of metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) for pulmonary infection diagnosis.

Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the results of mNGS and conventional tests from 140 hospitalized patients with suspected pulmonary infections from January 2019 to December 2020. The sample types included bronchoalveolar lavage fluid, lung tissue by transbronchial lung biopsy, pleural effusion, blood, and bronchial sputum.

Increasing researches have confirmed the relationship between slow-transit constipation and gut microbiota dysbiosis. Many population and animal experiments have identified probiotics as effectors for the relief of constipation symptoms, but the specific mechanism remains unclear. In this intervention study, strains isolated from five different sources were administered to mice with loperamide-induced constipation, and the impacts of these strains on constipation-related indicators were evaluated.

mir-100-let-7a-2-mir-125b-1 cluster host gene (MIR100HG), which is located on chromosome 11q24.1, is a polycistronic microRNA host gene. MIR100HG overexpression in colorectal cancer (CRC) has been demonstrated to be associated with cetuximab resistance; however, the role of MIR100HG in CRC metastasis remains unclear.

Dietary supplementation with conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) has been reported to alleviate the effect of colitis in mice, but the mechanisms involved need further exploration. The study aimed to investigate how orally administered CLA alleviates dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced colitis in mice. CLA was administered in five different doses: 40, 20, 10, 5, and 2.

Human serum albumin (HSA) is an intrinsic protein and important carrier that transports endogenous as well as exogenous substances. It is demonstrated in this study that the regional accumulation of albumin in the ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) brain may lead in the application of HSA based nanoparticles in the study of cerebral I/R injury. Resveratrol (RES) is potential in the treatment of cerebral I/R injury but is restricted for its water insolubility and short half-life .

Objective: To analyze the risk factors of carcinogenesis of large colorectal polyps (diameter ≥ 10 mm) found by colonoscopy.

Methods: Clinicopathological and follow-up data of 418 consecutive patients who were diagnosed as colorectal polyps with diameter≥10 mm by colonoscopy at two endoscopy centers of the Affiliated Wuxi Second People's Hospital, Nanjing Medical University (n=207) and Zhongshan Hospital, Fudan University (n=211) from January 2015 to December 2016 were retrospectively collected. High-grade intraepithelial neoplasia and cancer were defined as malignancy in this study.

Background: Although the main treatments of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) aim at the induction and maintenance of clinical remission, several studies have demonstrated inflammation still present in clinical remission. The goal of this study was to analyze the gene expression profiles between the pediatric IBD and control samples, aiming to further investigate the underlying therapeutic target in remission.

Methods: Gene expression profiles data of GSE33943 were downloaded from Gene Expression Omnibus, which included 45 pediatric IBD samples and 13 control samples.

The circadian clock has been demonstrated playing important roles in human tumorigenic process; however, the detailed clinical implications of circadian disruption on tumors have not been well understood. In this study, we investigated the expression pattern of Bmal1, the core component of the circadian system, in human pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDA). Our immunohistochemistry analysis showed that the protein level of Bmal1 was significantly decreased in tumor tissues from 87 patients with PDA compared with adjacent non-cancerous tissues.
