Purpose: To monitor the intraocular proangiogenic and profibrotic cytokine profiles within 7 days after intravitreous injection of conbercept (IVC) for patients with proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR).
Methods: This prospective, randomized controlled, consecutive, comparative study included 157 eyes with PDR. Participant eyes underwent sham IVC or IVC and subsequent vitrectomy at days 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 postinjection.

Background: Accumulating evidence supports the importance of noncoding RNAs and exosomes in coronary heart disease (CHD). However, exosomal-associated competing endogenous RNA- (ceRNA-) mediated regulatory mechanisms in CHD are largely unexplored. The present study aimed to explore exosomal-associated ceRNA networks in CHD.

Aim: To investigate the incidence and clinical characteristics of paracentral acute middle maculopathy (PAMM) and its relationship with prominent middle limiting membrane (p-MLM) sign in eyes with retinal artery occlusion (RAO) or retinal vein occlusion (RVO) in a Chinese clinical setting.
Methods: In this retrospective observational study from January 2015 to May 2020, multimodal imaging data of 807 eyes including 555 consecutive patients with RVO or 252 consecutive patients with RAO were reviewed. All patients were scanned using the spectrum-domain optical coherence tomography (OCT), and some of them underwent color fundus photography, fundus fluorescence angiography, en face OCT, and OCT angiography.

The nuclear estrogen‑related receptor‑α (ERRα) is an orphan receptor that has been identified as a transcriptional factor. Peroxisome proliferator‑activated receptor‑γ (PPARγ) coactivator‑1‑α (PGC‑1α) and PPARγ coactivator‑1‑β (PGC‑1β) act as the co‑activators of ERRα. Our previous study reported that activated ERRα promoted the invasion and proliferation of gallbladder cancer cells by promoting PI3K/AKT phosphorylation.

A humanized anti‑Toll‑like receptor 4 (TLR4) monoclonal antibody (mAb) was previously produced using phage antibody library technology, and it was found that the mAb could effectively ameliorate lipopolysaccharide (LPS)‑induced damage in macrophages. The present study investigated the protective effects exerted by the humanized anti‑TLR4 mAb against LPS‑induced acute kidney injury (AKI), as well as the underlying mechanisms. Female C57BL/6 mice were randomly divided into four groups (n=8 per group): i) Control; ii) LPS; iii) LPS + humanized anti‑TLR4 mAb (1 µg/g); and iv) LPS + humanized anti‑TLR4 mAb (10 µg/g).

Serine palmitoyltransferase (SPT) plays the key role on catalysing the formation of 3-ketodihydrosphingosine, which is the first step of the biosynthesis of sphingolipids. SPT is linked to many diseases including fungal infection, making it a potential therapeutic target. Thus, a logical docking-based virtual screening method was used to screen selective SPT inhibitor against fungi, not human.

Increasing evidence suggest that pleckstrin-2 (PLEK2) acts as an oncogene in several malignancies. The present study aimed to investigate the effects of PLEK2 on osteosarcoma (OS) tumorigenesis and metastasis. PLEK2 expression in OS was analyzed via bioinformatics, reverse transcription-quantitative PCR, western blot and immunohistochemistry analyses.

This paper was aimed to analyze the microRNA (miRNA) signatures in Alzheimer disease (AD) and find the significant expressions of miRNAs, their target genes, the functional enrichment analysis of the confirmed genes, and potential drug treatment. The miRNA expression information of the gene expression profile data was downloaded from the Gene Expression Omnibus database. The total data sample size is 1309, including 1021 AD samples and 288 normal samples.

Ischemic stroke remains a major cause of death, and anti-inflammatory strategies hold great promise for preventing major brain injury during reperfusion. In the past decade, stem cell-derived extracellular vesicles (EVs) have emerged as novel therapeutic effectors in immune modulation. However, the intravenous delivery of EVs into the ischemic brain remains a challenge due to poor targeting of unmodified EVs, and the costs of large-scale production of stem cell-derived EVs hinder their clinical application.

Background: Renal cyst is a common benign disease which is rare to progress from simple renal cyst to renal cell carcinoma.
Case Presentation: A 62-year-old woman who suffered a simple renal cyst for over 20 years complained intermittent lumbar in recent 2 years. At her latest admission, the cyst lesion displayed enhancement in the cystic wall by CT scan and cystic to partially solid change by ultrasound, so we did a partial nephrectomy and found that the cystic lesion had become a cyst-solid transition.

Sepsis-induced acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) remains a major threat to human health without effective therapeutic drugs. Previous studies demonstrated the power of gene expression profiling to reveal pathological changes associated with sepsis-induced ARDS. However, there is still a lack of systematic data mining framework for identifying potential targets for treatment.

Background: Nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) is an inflammatory disease with severe outcomes. Hepatocyte death, including apoptosis, necrosis, and pyroptosis, has been implicated in pathophysiology of NASH. Pyroptosis is mediated by inflammasome activation pathways including caspase-1-mediated canonical signaling pathway and caspase-11-mediated noncanonical signaling pathway.

Background: Preclinical studies and epidemiologic data had indicated statins had antineoplastic properties in breast cancer patients. Since breast cancer treatment is based on its phenotype, it is important to explore influence of post-diagnosis statin usage on breast cancer patients with different phenotypes.
Methods: We searched the related studies between inception and August, 2019 from MEDLINE and EMBASE.

Pathologically, blood-spinal-cord-barrier (BSCB) disruption after spinal cord injury (SCI) leads to infiltration of numerous peripheral macrophages into injured areas and accumulation around newborn vessels. Among the leaked macrophages, M1-polarized macrophages are dominant and play a crucial role throughout the whole SCI process. The aim of our study was to investigate the effects of M1-polarized bone marrow-derived macrophages (M1-BMDMs) on vascular endothelial cells and their underlying mechanism.

Objective: To evaluate the efficacy of transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS) and non-TIPS therapy (endoscopy and/or nonselective beta-blockers [NSBB]) in patients with cirrhosis and active variceal hemorrhage who did not respond to high-dose vasoactive drugs and required balloon tamponade for hemostasis.
Methods: Medical records of cirrhotic patients who did not respond to high-dose vasoactive drugs and required balloon tamponade for hemostasis at five university hospitals in China between January 2011 and December 2018 were reviewed. Treatment outcomes were compared between the TIPS and the non-TIPS groups.

Rationale: Half-dose or reduced-fluence photodynamic therapy (PDT) with verteporfin has been well acknowledged to be the most effective and permanent treatment with very low rates of complications. However, we report a case of chronic central serous chorioretinopathy (CSC) who developed choroidal neovascularization (CNV) secondary to half-dose PDT within only 3 weeks. Such an occurrence following this short a course of treatment has not been reported previously.

Background: Increasing evidence suggests that microglia experience two distinct phenotypes after acute ischemic stroke (AIS): a deleterious M1 phenotype and a neuroprotective M2 phenotype. Promoting the phenotype shift of M1 microglia to M2 microglia is thought to improve functional recovery after AIS. Minocycline, a tetracycline antibiotic, can improve functional recovery after cerebral ischemia in pre-clinical and clinical research.
