Previous studies have demonstrated that patients with schizophrenia (SZ) have greater rate of metabolic disorder as compared with the control population, which likely be the consequence of use of atypical antipsychotics. Olanzapine is a widely used antipsychotic, which increases the weight of SZ patients. However, the underlying mechanism remains poorly understood.

Background: A diagnosis of dementia in middle-aged and elder people is often complicated by physical frailty and comorbid neuropsychiatric symptoms (NPSs). Previous studies have identified NPSs as a risk factor for dementia. The aim of this study was to figure out to what extent individual NPS and certain demographic factors increased the risk of dementia in middle-aged and senior psychiatric inpatients.

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is one of the most prevalent psychiatric disorders in children. The orexigenic hormone ghrelin is important in neuroprotection and neurodevelopment, which may play an important role in psychopathogenesis of ADHD. This study aimed to systematically investigate the genomic and pharmacological manipulations of ghrelin functioning in ADHD-like symptoms in zebrafish models and validated the effects of ghrelin polymorphisms in human subjects with ADHD.

Previous studies consistently showed the interaction between Sirtuin 1 (SIRT1) and immune inflammation is significantly related to metabolic abnormalities, but their role in the pathogenesis of metabolic syndrome caused by second-generation antipsychotics (SGAs) in schizophrenia patients largely remains unknown. Hence, the present study aimed to fill this gap. A total of 54 schizophrenia patients with olanzapine or clozapine monotherapy [metabolic syndrome (MetS)/non-MetS patients, 27/27] and 67 healthy subjects were recruited in the present study.

Background: Aminosulpiride is a benzamide used to treat acute or chronic schizophrenia Some researchers believe that early improvement of depression symptoms in patients has a certain predictive effect on the recovery of symptoms after drug treatment for schizophrenia. This study is aimed to explore whether the improvement of depression symptoms is a predictive factor for the amelioration of the schizophrenia symptoms by amisulpride treatment.
Methods: A total of 383 patients with schizophrenia admitted to 15 hospitals in Fujian and Zhejiang from July 1, 2018 to March 31, 2019 were included in the study.

As a form of artificial intelligence, artificial neural networks (ANNs) have the advantages of adaptability, parallel processing capabilities, and non-linear processing. They have been widely used in the early detection and diagnosis of tumors. In this article, we introduce the development, working principle, and characteristics of ANNs and review the research progress on the application of ANNs in the detection and diagnosis of gastrointestinal and liver tumors.

Depressive symptoms could be considered a mutual manifestation of major depressive disorder and schizophrenia. Rs3758391 is a functional locus of Sirtuin (SIRT1) involving depression etiology. In this study, we hypothesized that the SIRT1 SNP rs3758391 might be a hazard for schizophrenia pathogenesis, especially related to the appearance of depressive symptoms.

Genetic analyses for bipolar disorder (BD) have achieved prominent success in Europeans in recent years, whereas its genetic basis in other populations remains relatively less understood. We herein report that the leading risk locus for BD in European genome-wide association studies (GWAS), the single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) rs9834970 near TRANK1 at 3p22 region, is also genome-wide significantly associated with BD in a meta-analysis of four independent East Asian samples including 5748 cases and 65,361 controls (p = 2.27 × 10, odds ratio = 1.

Background: 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) is a common chemotherapy drug for gastric cancer. Human antigen R (HuR) is an RNA-binding protein that is also known as ELAV like RNA binding protein 1 (ELAVL1) regulates gene expression by binding to target genes 3' UTR region and is highly expressed in tumor tissues. However, the regulatory mechanisms of HuR in 5-FU mediated chemotherapy in stomach cancer are not well understood.

Our previous study showed that metabolic abnormalities reduced the levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and deteriorated cognitive performance in patients with schizophrenia. Inflammation may play a key role in this process. Omega-3 fatty acids have been documented to ameliorate inflammation.

Objective: Patients with opioid use disorder (OUD) have impaired attention, inhibition control, and memory function. The aldehyde dehydrogenase () gene has been associated with OUD and gene polymorphisms may affect aldehyde metabolism and cognitive function in other substance use disorder. Therefore, we aimed to investigate whether genotypes have significant effects on neuropsychological functions in OUD patients undergoing methadone maintenance therapy (MMT).

Toxic cyanobacterial blooms often coincide with metal pollution in a freshwater environment because of surface run-off enriched with nutrients and metals. However, the joint toxic effects of cyanobacterial toxins and metals on aquatic animals remain unknown. In this study, single and joint toxic effects and mechanisms of microcystin-LR (MCLR) and copper (Cu) were investigated in the early development of zebrafish (Danio rerio).

Background: The outcome of methadone maintenance therapy (MMT) varies in each patient with opioid use disorder (OUD). Opioid abuse activates proinflammatory processes by increasing cytokine production and impairing neurotrophic factor expression, and possibly leads to a vicious cycle that hinders recovery. Therefore, we investigated whether markers of inflammation and neurotrophic expression correlate with the MMT outcomes in OUD patients.

The endothelial cell (EC) barrier disruption has been implicated in vascular leakage and pulmonary edema. Many reports have shown that the EC barrier dysfunction is regulated by the sphingosine-1-phophate (S1P)/S1P receptor-1 (S1PR1) axis. Identifying downstream effectors for the S1P/S1PR1 axis in pulmonary vasculature has been limited by mixed populations in vitro cultures that do not retain physiological EC phenotype and complex of tedious proteomics.

A batch culture experiment was conducted to study the interactive effects of ocean acidification (OA) and solar ultraviolet radiation (UVR, 280-400 nm) on the harmful dinoflagellate Karenia mikimotoi. Cells were incubated in 7-days trials under four treatments. Physiological (growth, pigments, UV) and toxicity (hemolytic activity and its toxicity to zebrafish embryos) response variables were measured in four treatments, representing two factorial combinations of CO (400 and 1000 μatm) and solar irradiance (with or without UVR).
