The objective of the present study was to investigate acute kidney injury (AKI) induced by myocardial ischemia/reperfusion (MIR) in diabetic rats and elucidate its underlying mechanism. A rat model of MIR was established by left anterior descending coronary artery occlusion for 30 min, followed by reperfusion for 2 h. Rats were randomly divided into four groups: i) Sham group, ii) sham + MIR group, iii) diabetic group and iv) diabetes + MIR group.

Gases such as nitric oxide (NO) and carbon monoxide (CO) play important roles both in normal physiology and in disease. Recent studies have shown that hydrogen sulfide (H2S) protects neurons against oxidative stress and ischemia-reperfusion injury and attenuates lipopolysaccharides (LPS) induced neuroinflammation in microglia, exhibiting anti-inflammatory and antiapoptotic activities. The gas H2S is emerging as a novel regulator of important physiologic functions such as arterial diameter, blood flow, and leukocyte adhesion.

Sirtuin 2 (SIRT2) is a strong protein deacetylase, which is highly expressed in central nervous system. Recently, an association between SIRT2 rs10410544 polymorphism and late-onset Alzheimer's disease (LOAD) was found in the APOEε4-negative Caucasian population. To investigate the potential association between the rs10410544 C/T polymorphism of SIRT2 and the risk of LOAD, we conducted an independent replication case-control study in a Northern Han Chinese population comprising 1133 cases and 1159 healthy controls being matched for age and gender.

Epilepsy is a syndrome characterized by recurrent spontaneous seizures due to neuronal hyperactivity in the brain. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small, non-coding RNAs that regulate post-transcriptional expression of protein-coding mRNAs, which may have key roles in the pathogenesis of neurological disorders. Evidence indicates that miRNAs are emerging as a critical new layer of gene expression regulation with implications for the cause and treatment of epilepsy.

Increasing evidence suggests that IL-1 β (C-511T) and IL-1 α (C-889T) genes polymorphisms are associated with the susceptibility to cardiocerebral vascular disease. In this paper, we investigated the relationships between these polymorphisms and the risk of ischemic stroke (IS) classified by TOAST criteria in the north Chinese Han population. 440 cases of IS and 486 age- and gender-matched controls of Chinese Han population were enrolled.

The present study aimed to investigate the expression of aldosterone synthase (CYP11B2), adrenocorticotropic hormone receptor (ACTH-R) and their regulating transcription factors in adrenal incidentalomas (AIs) from normotensive and hypertensive patients to distinguish subclinical or atypical primary aldosteronism (PA) from AIs. Total RNA was extracted from 8 normal adrenal cortices (NAs), 46 AIs, 15 aldosterone-producing adenomas (APAs) and 6 idiopathic hyperaldosteronisms (IHAs). Real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and immunohistochemistry were performed to determine the mRNA and protein expression of CYP11B2, ACTH-R, steroidogenic factor-1 (SF1) and dosage-sensitive sex reversal, adrenal hypoplasia congenita, critical region on the X chromosome, gene-1 (DAX-1) in the different tissues.

Background: Vertebral artery dissection (VAD) is often associated with trauma or occurs spontaneously, inevitably causing some neurological deficits. Even though acute infection can be related to the development of spontaneous VAD (sVAD), VAD associated with viral meningitis has never been reported in the literature.
Case Presentation: A 42-year-old man with fever, sore throat, and runny nose developed sudden onset of occipital headache, vertigo, transient confusion, diplopia, and ataxia.
