Purpose: Aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) is accompanied by cerebral perfusion changes. We aimed to measure the parenchymal blood volume (PBV) maps acquired by C-arm flat-panel detector CT (FDCT) to assess the cerebral blood volume at an early stage in aneurysmal SAH and to explore the correlation with the outcomes at discharge.

Methods: Data of 66 patients with aneurysmal SAH who underwent FDCT PBV examination were retrospectively analyzed.

Structural and Functional Basis of JAMM Deubiquitinating Enzymes in Disease.

Biomolecules

June 2022

Department of Cardiology, The Affiliated Hospital of Yangzhou University, Yangzhou University, Yangzhou 225000, China.

Deubiquitinating enzymes (DUBs) are a group of proteases that are important for maintaining cell homeostasis by regulating the balance between ubiquitination and deubiquitination. As the only known metalloproteinase family of DUBs, JAB1/MPN/Mov34 metalloenzymes (JAMMs) are specifically associated with tumorigenesis and immunological and inflammatory diseases at multiple levels. The far smaller numbers and distinct catalytic mechanism of JAMMs render them attractive drug targets.

TM4SF1 promotes esophageal squamous cell carcinoma metastasis by interacting with integrin α6.

Cell Death Dis

July 2022

Division of Regulatory Glycobiology, Institute of Molecular Biomembrane and Glycobiology, Tohoku Medical and Pharmaceutical University, Sendai, Miyagi, 981-8558, Japan.

Transmembrane-4 L-six family member-1 (TM4SF1) is a member of the L6 family and functions as a signal transducer to regulate tumor cell behaviors. However, the function and mechanism of TM4SF1 in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) metastasis remains unclear. Here, we find that TM4SF1 expression is increased and positively correlated with clinical TNM stage, N classification, differentiation, tumor size, and poor prognosis in ESCC patients.

Background: Sexual dimorphism with critical diseases has been documented. However, the role of serum sex hormones for the presence of acute kidney injury (AKI) in moderately or severe acute pancreatitis (MSAP and SAP) patients remains controversial. Here we set out to evaluate whether early (first 48 h) serum estradiol level is associated with AKI in patients with MSAP and SAP.

Probiotic Cocktail Alleviates Intestinal Inflammation Through Improving Gut Microbiota and Metabolites in Colitis Mice.

Front Cell Infect Microbiol

July 2022

Department of General Surgery, Jinshan Branch of Shanghai Sixth People's Hospital, Shanghai University of Medicine and Health Sciences, Shanghai, China.

The modulation of the gut microbiome has been widely suggested as a promising therapeutic strategy for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Here, we established a novel probiotic cocktail to investigate its therapeutic role in acute colitis mice. During dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced colitis, the mice were treated with the probiotic cocktail, fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) from a healthy mice donor, or 5-aminosalicylic acid (5-ASA), respectively.

National Urological Cancer Center, Department of Urology, Institute of Urology, Clinical Research Cooperation Network of Urology of the Peking University First Hospital, The Peking University First Hospital, Peking University, Beijing and the Affiliated Hospital of Yangzhou University, Yangzhou University, Yangzhou, China.

Early detection and precise prognostic evaluation of clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) are crucial for patient life expectancy. Ion channel-related genes (ICRGs) are of great diagnostic and prognostic value as components that maintain the normal structure of the kidney. Therefore, we systematically explored the diagnostic, prognostic, and therapeutic value of ICRGs in ccRCC using the multi-database.

NF-κB-dependent secretome of senescent cells can trigger neuroendocrine transdifferentiation of breast cancer cells.

Aging Cell

July 2022

Centre de Recherche en Cancérologie de Lyon, Inserm U1052, CNRS UMR 5286, Centre Léon Bérard, Université de Lyon, Lyon, France.

Article Synopsis
  • Cellular senescence leads to a stable halt in cell division and the release of the senescence-associated secretory phenotype (SASP), which includes inflammatory and growth factors that can influence surrounding cells and tissues.
  • * The SASP can cause changes in neighboring cells, such as promoting immune responses and contributing to conditions like fibrosis and cancer through a process known as paracrine senescence.
  • * New findings reveal that SASP can induce neuroendocrine transdifferentiation (NED) in certain epithelial cancer cells by altering calcium signaling, particularly in older patients with specific tumor characteristics.

Effect of TDP43-CTFs35 on Brain Endothelial Cell Functions in Cerebral Ischemic Injury.

Mol Neurobiol

July 2022

Department of Pharmacological & Pharmaceutical Sciences, College of Pharmacy, University of Houston, Houston, TX, 77204-5000, USA.

Pathological changes in the brain endothelium play an important role in the progression of ischemic stroke and the compromised BBB under ischemic stroke conditions cause neuronal damage. However, the pathophysiological mechanisms of the BBB under normal conditions and under ischemic stroke conditions have not been fully elucidated. The present study demonstrated that knockdown of TAR DNA-binding protein 43 (TDP-43) or overexpression of TDP43-CTFs35 inhibited tight junction protein expression, and mammalian sterile-20-like 1/2 (MST1/2) and YES-associated protein (YAP) phosphorylation in brain ECs and suppressed brain EC migration in vitro.

Article Synopsis
  • Cell cycle arrest is a key feature of cellular senescence that acts as a barrier to cancer progression, often induced by stress factors like telomere shortening or cancer treatments.
  • Analysis of breast cancer data reveals that tumors with senescent characteristics are linked to better short-term survival and lower tumor grades, along with negative hormone receptor status.
  • The study suggests that the low expression of PCK2 in senescent breast tumors may improve prognosis by promoting a senescent phenotype and inhibiting epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT).

Despite tremendous efforts devoted to research in pancreatic cancer (PC), the mechanism underlying the tumorigenesis and progression of PC is still not completely clear. Additionally, ideal biomarkers and satisfactory therapeutic strategies for clinical application in PC are still lacking. Accumulating evidence suggests that long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) might participate in the pathogenesis of diverse cancers, including PC.

Background: Percutaneous endoscopic lumbar discectomy (PELD) has become a favorable surgical approach for lumbar radiculopathy caused by intervertebral disc herniation. Studies have revealed patients with type II Modic change may suffer from unrelieved low back pain and higher lumbar disc herniation (LDH) recurrence after herniated nucleus pulposus removal. Therefore, in this study, we aim to evaluate how PELD performed in management of LDH patients with type II Modic change.
