Interleukin-37 protects against acinar cell pyroptosis in acute pancreatitis.

JCI Insight

November 2022

Department of Critical Care Medicine, Research Institute of General Surgery, Affiliated Jinling Hospital, Medical School of Nanjing University, Nanjing, China.

Acute pancreatitis (AP) is a local and/or systemic inflammatory disease that starts with acinar cell injury and necrosis; it has no effective medical treatment and thus remains a life-threatening condition. Interleukin-37 (IL-37), a natural immunomodulator, has demonstrated an antiinflammatory effect; however, the role of IL-37 in AP remains unknown. The serum IL-37 levels of 39 healthy controls and 94 patients with AP were measured.

Role of Exosomes in Pharyngucutaneous Fistula After Total Laryngectomy.

Int J Nanomedicine

September 2022

Department of Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery, Clinical Medical College, Yangzhou University, Yangzhou, 225001, People's Republic of China.

Pharyngocutaneous fistula is the most common complication after total laryngectomy and is difficult to heal. Although conservative treatment and surgical repair are effective, they often take longer and additional trips to the operating room, which undoubtedly increases the financial burden on patients. Especially in combination with diseases such as diabetes and hypertension, which affect the efficacy of surgery.

Background: Abnormal lipid metabolism is one of the most prominent metabolic changes in cancer. Studies have shown that lipid metabolism also plays an important role in neuroblastoma. We recently discovered that the insulinoma-associated 2 gene (INSM2) could regulate lipid metabolism in neuroblastoma (NB) and is improperly controlled by super enhancers, a mammalian genome region that has been shown to control the expression of NB cell identity genes.

State Key Laboratory of Natural Medicines, NMPA Key Laboratory for Research and Evaluation of Pharmaceutical Preparations and Excipients, and Department of Pharmaceutics, School of Pharmacy, China Pharmaceutical University, 24 Tong Jia Xiang, Nanjing 210009, China. Electronic address:

Oxidative stress is a distinguishing feature in atherosclerosis disease. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) can increase the oxidized low density lipoprotein (ox-LDL) and oxidative damage to macrophages in the plaque. Although antioxidant agents such as N-acetylcysteine are used to treat atherosclerosis, but provide a poor clinical benefit to the majority of patients with atherosclerosis.

Sorafenib resistance is often developed and impedes the benefits of clinical therapy in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients. However, the relationship between sorafenib resistance and tumor immune environment and adjuvant drugs for sorafenib-resistant HCC are not systemically identified. This study first analyzed the expression profiles of sorafenib-resistant HCC cells to explore immune cell infiltration levels and differentially expressed immune-related genes (DEIRGs).

A review on chiral metal-organic frameworks: synthesis and asymmetric applications.

Nanoscale

September 2022

Department of Pharmacy, The Affiliated Hospital of Yangzhou University, Yangzhou University, Yangzhou, Jiangsu Province 225000, People's Republic of China.

Chiral metal-organic frameworks (CMOFs) have the characteristics of framework structure diversity and functional tunability, and have important applications in the fields of chiral identification, separation of enantiomers and asymmetric catalysis. In recent years, the application of CMOFs has also been extended to other research fields, such as circularly polarized fluorescence and chiral ferroelectrics. Compared with achiral MOFs, the design of CMOFs only considers the modes of introduction of chirality, and also takes into account the crystallization and purification.

Elevated serum ferritin levels are associated with severity and prognosis of severe acute pancreatitis: a preliminary cohort study.

BMC Gastroenterol

September 2022

Department of Gastroenterology, Pancreatic Center, The Affiliated Hospital of Yangzhou University, Yangzhou University, Yangzhou, 225000, Jiangsu, China.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examines how elevated serum ferritin (SF) levels relate to the severity of acute pancreatitis (AP), noting SF is an indicator of oxidative stress and inflammation.
  • An analysis of 200 AP patients revealed that nearly half had high SF levels, which were linked to a higher severity of the condition and increased systemic inflammatory response.
  • The study concluded that SF levels can effectively predict the severity of AP and the likelihood of organ failure in affected patients.

Breast cancer has a marked recurrence and metastatic trait and is one of the most prevalent malignancies affecting women's health worldwide. Tumor initiation and progression begin after the cell goes from a quiescent to an activated state and requires different mechanisms to act in concert to regulate t a specific set of spectral genes for expression. Cancer stem cells (CSCs) have been proven to initiate and drive tumorigenesis due to their capability of self-renew and differentiate.

Article Synopsis
  • Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs)-derived extracellular vesicles (EVs) have therapeutic potential for treating cardiac disorders, particularly in cases of inflammation and dysfunction triggered by lipopolysaccharide (LPS).
  • The study found that miR-223-3p, which is reduced in LPS-induced cardiomyocytes, targets FOXO3 and downregulates the inflammatory mediator NLRP3, thereby impacting inflammation and pyroptosis.
  • Administering MSC-EVs containing miR-223-3p to LPS-exposed cardiomyocytes and mouse models demonstrated a decrease in inflammation and cardiac dysfunction, confirming the role of miR-223-3p in protecting heart cells from inflammatory damage.
