Background And Aims: Epicardial adipose tissue (EAT) is associated with cardiovascular disease, and sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 inhibitors (SGLT-2I) have been reported to reduce the occurrence of cardiovascular events. This study was designed to investigate the effect of an SGLT-2 inhibitor (dapagliflozin) on EAT and left ventricular (LV) systolic function in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients during a 6-month follow-up.

Methods: Twenty-seven T2DM patients who received dapagliflozin for the first time were enrolled in this study to measure EAT thickness and evaluate LV function before and after 6 months of SGLT-2 administration.

Intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC) is the second common primary hepatic malignancy tumor. In this study, an integrative analysis of differentially expressed genes (DEGs) and miRNAs from the ICC onset and adjacent normal tissues were performed to explore the regulatory roles of miRNA-mRNA interaction. A total of 1018 DEGs and 39 miRNAs were likely involved in ICC pathogenesis, suggesting the changes in cell metabolism in ICC development.

Objective: Camrelizumab combination therapy for advanced or metastatic esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) has considerable survival benefits. This study investigated the cost-effectiveness of camrelizumab combination therapy versus chemotherapy alone as a first-line treatment for patients with ESCC from the perspective of the Chinese healthcare system.

Methods: A three-state partitioned survival model was developed to estimate total costs, life years (LYs), quality-adjusted life years (QALYs), incremental cost-effectiveness ratios (ICERs) and incremental net health benefits (INHBs) over a 20-year time horizon.

Background: Oxidative stress (OS) is a key pathophysiological mechanism in Crohn's disease (CD). OS-related genes can be affected by environmental factors, intestinal inflammation, gut microbiota, and epigenetic changes. However, the role of OS as a potential CD etiological factor or triggering factor is unknown, as differentially expressed OS genes in CD can be either a cause or a subsequent change of intestinal inflammation.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the relationship between the microRNA miR-20b and asthma-related airway inflammation, focusing on how it regulates proteins TXNIP and NLRP3 inflammasome.
  • Researchers used an ovalbumin-induced asthmatic mouse model to analyze the effects of miR-20b on various inflammatory markers and structural changes in the lungs.
  • Results showed that overexpression of miR-20b reduced inflammation and pyroptosis by inhibiting TXNIP, which in turn decreased its interaction with NLRP3, suggesting a potential therapeutic mechanism for asthma treatment.

An Update on Adipose-Derived Stem Cells for Regenerative Medicine: Where Challenge Meets Opportunity.

Adv Sci (Weinh)

July 2023

Department of Orthopaedics, The First Affiliated Hospital of Soochow University, Orthopaedic Institute, Medical College, Soochow University, Suzhou, Jiangsu, 215006, China.

Over the last decade, adipose-derived stem cells (ADSCs) have attracted increasing attention in the field of regenerative medicine. ADSCs appear to be the most advantageous cell type for regenerative therapies owing to their easy accessibility, multipotency, and active paracrine activity. This review highlights current challenges in translating ADSC-based therapies into clinical settings and discusses novel strategies to overcome the limitations of ADSCs.

Diabetic wound healing has become a serious healthcare challenge. The high-glucose environment leads to persistent bacterial infection and mitochondrial dysfunction, resulting in chronic inflammation, abnormal vascular function, and tissue necrosis. To solve these issues, we developed a double-network hydrogel, constructed with pluronic F127 diacrylate (F127DA) and hyaluronic acid methacrylate (HAMA), and enhanced by SS31-loaded mesoporous polydopamine nanoparticles (MPDA NPs).

Background: The incidence of chondrosarcoma is increasing every year, and the treatment and prognosis of patients with high-grade chondrosarcoma are becoming more and more important. Nomogram is a tool that can quickly and easily predict the overall survival of tumor patients. Therefore, the development and validation of a nomogram to predict overall survival in patients with high-grade chondrosarcoma was desired.

Apigenin Inhibits the Progression of Osteoarthritis by Mediating Macrophage Polarization.

Molecules

March 2023

Jiangsu Key Laboratory of New Drug Research and Clinical Pharmacy, Xuzhou Medical University, Xuzhou 221004, China.

Objective: The overall purpose of this study was to investigate the mechanism of macrophage polarization on chondrocyte injury in osteoarthritis and the protective effect of apigenin on chondrocytes in osteoarthritis.

Method: Primary chondrocytes were isolated from the knee cartilage of three-day-old mice, and cells positive for Alsine blue staining and type II collagen immunocytochemical staining were identified and used in followup experiments. Transwell coculture was performed.

Current studies have found that low-dose irradiation (IR) can promote bone regeneration. However, mechanism studies of IR-triggered bone regeneration mainly focus on the effects of osteoblasts, neglecting the role of the surrounding immune microenvironment. Here in this study, in vitro proliferation experiments showed that low-dose IR ≤2 Gy could promote the proliferation of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs), and qRT-PCR assay showed that low-dose IR ≤2 Gy could exert the M2 polarization of Raw264.
