Background: Virtual reality (VR) gaming is considered a safe and effective alternative to standard pain alleviation in the hospital. This study addressed the potential effectiveness and feasibility of a VR game that was developed by our research team for repeated at-home burn dressing changes.

Methods: A randomized clinical trial was conducted among patients recruited from the outpatient burn clinic of a large American Burn Association-verified pediatric burn center between September 2019 and June 2021.

Factors associated with mental health service use among families bereaved by pediatric cancer.

Objectives: We identified types of interventions used by bereaved family members and examined associations with demographic and medical factors. Furthermore, we examined associations between distress and intervention use among bereaved families.

Methods: Bereaved families ( = 85) were recruited from three children's hospitals 3-12 months after their child died of cancer.

Validation of the North Star Assessment for Limb-Girdle Type Muscular Dystrophies.

Objective: The North Star Assessment for limb-girdle type muscular dystrophies (NSAD), a clinician-reported outcome measure (ClinRO) of motor performance, was initially developed and validated for use in dysferlinopathy, an autosomal recessive form of limb-girdle muscular dystrophy (LGMD R2/2B). Recent developments in treatments for limb-girdle muscular dystrophies (LGMD) have highlighted the urgent need for disease-specific ClinROs. The purpose of this study was to understand the ability of the NSAD to quantify motor function across the broad spectrum of LGMD phenotypes.

Association of Pre-procedural Anxiety With Procedure-Related Pain During Outpatient Pediatric Burn Care: A Pilot Study.

The relationship between preprocedural anxiety and pain is not clear but has the potential to change the way pediatric patients need to be cared for prior to burn procedures. Using results from our recent randomized clinical trial among outpatient burn patients (n = 90) aged 6-17 years, the objective of this subsequent analysis was to assess whether preprocedural anxiety was associated with self-reported and researcher-observed pain scores. Anxiety before the dressing change was assessed using an abbreviated State-Trait Anxiety Inventory for Children (range 6-21) and reported with 95% confidence intervals (CI).

Genotype-phenotype correlations in valosin-containing protein disease: a retrospective muticentre study.

Background: Valosin-containing protein (VCP) disease, caused by mutations in the gene, results in myopathy, Paget's disease of bone (PBD) and frontotemporal dementia (FTD). Natural history and genotype-phenotype correlation data are limited. This study characterises patients with mutations in gene and investigates genotype-phenotype correlations.

Mutant CFTR expressed in phagocytic cells such as macrophages contributes to persistent infection, inflammation, and lung disease in CF.

Antibody Titers Against Human Cytomegalovirus gM/gN and gB Among Pregnant Women and Their Infants.

Congenital CMV (cCMV) infection can affect infants born to mothers with preconceptional seroimmunity. To prevent cCMV due to nonprimary maternal infection, vaccines eliciting responses exceeding natural immunity may be required. Anti-gM/gN antibodies have neutralizing capacity and in animal models, but anti-gM/gN antibodies have not been characterized among seroimmune pregnant women.

Neonatal abstinence syndrome: Effectiveness of targeted umbilical cord drug screening.

Objective: This study sought to determine if targeted drug screening of newborns was effective in identifying a positive drug test result.

Study Design: This was a retrospective cross-sectional study. A total of 340 infants met criteria for drug screening.

Mouse Model of Sendai Virus-Induced Lung Disease.

Sendai virus (SeV), also known as the murine parainfluenza virus 1, is an enveloped negative-sense RNA paramyxovirus from the family Paramyxoviridae and genus Respirovirus. The virus was named after Sendai, city in Japan, where it was first isolated (Kuroya, Ishida, Yokohama Med Bull 4:217-233, 1953). Antigenically, SeV is closely related to human parainfluenza viruses 1 and 3.

Implementation of SEEK in a Children's Advocacy Center: A Process Improvement Initiative.

Unlabelled: Risk factors for child maltreatment are well-described, but clinicians may overlook these risk factors. The Safe Environment for Every Kid (SEEK) model is an evidence-based approach to identifying psychosocial risk factors for child maltreatment. This article describes a quality improvement initiative to implement the SEEK model in a unique pediatric setting, a Children's Advocacy Center.

Sex differences in vascular aging and impact of GPER deletion.

Aging is a nonmodifiable risk factor for cardiovascular disease associated with arterial stiffening and endothelial dysfunction. We hypothesized that sex differences exist in vascular aging processes and would be attenuated by global deletion of the G protein-coupled estrogen receptor. Blood pressure was measured by tail-cuff plethysmography, pulse wave velocity (PWV) and echocardiography were assessed with high-resolution ultrasound, and small vessel reactivity was measured using wire myography in adult (25 wk) and middle-aged (57 wk) male and female mice.

The identification of biomarkers such as salivary miRNAs that detect concussed children at increased risk of PPCS has received growing attention in recent years. Internal Temperatures of Packaging for Overnight Cross-country Shipping of Zebrafish ().

As the use of zebrafish () as a research model continues to rise, so too will the shipping and sharing of zebrafish strains across collaborating institutions. If done incorrectly, shipping can result in significant mortality, welfare concerns, and loss of valuable resources for researchers and research institutions. Here we introduce a novel method to track temperatures of zebrafish containers during shipping and show that internal packaging temperatures are directly affected by the external temperatures.

Predictors of substance use disorder treatment initiation and engagement among adolescents enrolled in Medicaid.

Adolescents with substance use disorders (SUD) should receive timely access to treatment to improve lifelong outcomes. The Healthcare Effectiveness Data and Information Set (HEDIS) initiation and engagement in treatment (IET) performance measure was intended to promote quality improvement for patients with SUD. Yet, few studies have assessed predictors of measure performance among adolescents or other engagement in mental health services, which is critical to understanding disparities in treatment quality or opportunities for targeted improvement strategies.

Linking the Perinatal Environment to Neonatal Cardiovascular Outcomes.

Cases of high-risk pregnancies continue to rise throughout the United States and globally, increasing rates of maternal and neonatal morbidity. Common pregnancy complications and morbidities include preterm birth, hypertensive disorders, fetal growth restriction, diabetes mellitus, and chorioamnionitis. Exposure to these perinatal conditions contributes to cardiac morbidities in the fetus and neonate, including altered cardiac growth, congenital heart disease, and cardiac dysfunction.

Prematurity and Pulmonary Vein Stenosis: The Role of Parenchymal Lung Disease and Pulmonary Vascular Disease.

Pulmonary vein stenosis (PVS) has emerged as a critical problem in premature infants with persistent respiratory diseases, particularly bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD). As a parenchymal lung disease, BPD also influences vascular development with associated pulmonary hypertension recognized as an important comorbidity of both BPD and PVS. PVS is commonly detected later in infancy, suggesting additional postnatal factors that contribute to disease development, progression, and severity.

Functional outcome measures in young, steroid-naïve boys with Duchenne muscular dystrophy.

The purpose of this study was to quantitate motor performance in 196 genetically confirmed steroid-naïve boys with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD), to evaluate the test-retest reliability of measures of motor performance in young DMD boys, and to assess correlations among the different functional outcomes including timed tests. Boys aged 4-7 years were recruited in the FOR-DMD study, a comparative effectiveness study of different steroid regimens in DMD. Eligible boys had to be able to rise from the floor independently and to perform pulmonary function testing consistently.

A translatable RNAi-driven gene therapy silences PMP22/Pmp22 genes and improves neuropathy in CMT1A mice.

Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease type 1A (CMT1A), the most common inherited demyelinating peripheral neuropathy, is caused by PMP22 gene duplication. Overexpression of WT PMP22 in Schwann cells destabilizes the myelin sheath, leading to demyelination and ultimately to secondary axonal loss and disability. No treatments currently exist that modify the disease course.
