Background: The common occurrence of atrial fibrillation (AF) as a cardiac arrhythmia, along with its link to sleep deprivation (SD), is gaining more acknowledgment. Even with progress in comprehending the development of AF, the molecular connections between SD and AF are still not well-defined. The objective of this research was to pinpoint the shared molecular routes responsible for SD-induced AF and investigate possible treatment targets.

Sepsis-induced myocardial dysfunction (SIMD) involves reversible myocardial dysfunction. The use of inotropes can restore adequate cardiac output and tissue perfusion, but conventional inotropes, such as dobutamine and adrenaline, have limited efficacy in such situations. Levosimendan is a novel inotrope that acts in a catecholamine-independent manner.

Hypersensitivity pneumonitis (HP), including pigeon breeder's lung (PBL), often progresses from acute inflammation to fibrosis, impairing lung function and limiting targeted therapeutic strategies. Mechanistic studies on PBL progression are limited by the lack of preclinical animal models and a predominant focus on patient data. This study explores the immunopathological characteristics of all stages of PBL in mice and evaluates the therapeutic potential of human umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stem cells (UC-MSCs) during the non-fibrotic stage.

Malnutrition substantially contributes to adverse clinical outcomes. However, no national survey has been conducted to characterize its epidemiology in hospital settings in China. We conducted the China Nutrition Fundamental Data 2020 project among a multistage stratified cluster sample of adult inpatients from 291 study sites across 30 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities (except for Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan Province, and the Xizang Autonomous Region, please see MATERIALS AND METHODS for details of the causes) of China to generate reliable data on the prevalence of malnutrition and explore the associated risk factors.

Previous studies have shown that serum albumin levels are associated with a greater risk of metabolic syndrome (MetS). However, it is unclear whether this association is causal or only influenced by confounding factors, so further investigation is needed to determine the causal relationships. Researchers selected participants with serum albumin, metabolic syndrome, and related covariates from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) database for a total of 14,036 individuals, including 5483 individuals with MetS and 8553 individuals without MetS.

Background: Bacteremia is sometimes observed in patients with prosthetic joint infection (PJI), and it is associated with a lower likelihood of infection control. However, the prevalence and association of bacteremia in chronic PJI remain unknown.

Questions/purposes: (1) What percentage of patients are diagnosed with bacteremia at the time of hospital admission and before surgery for chronic PJI? (2) What clinical factors are associated with positive blood cultures? (3) To what degree are positive blood cultures associated with infection-free implant survival in patients with chronic PJI?

Methods: This prospective study was conducted at a single academic institution from June 2021 to August 2022.

Background: The antiarrhythmic effect of melatonin(MLT) has been demonstrated in several studies; however, this hypothesis has recently been contested. Our research seeks to determine if exogenous MLT supplementation can reduce atrial fibrillation (AF) susceptibility due to sleep deprivation (SD) by addressing Ca mishandling and atrial mitochondrial oxidative stress.

Methods: Adult rats received daily MLT or vehicle injections and were exposed to a modified water tank.

Prognostic nutritional index as a predictor of cardiovascular and all-cause mortality in American adults with hypertension: results from the NHANES database.

Front Cardiovasc Med

January 2025

State Key Laboratory of Pathogenesis, Prevention and Treatment of High Incidence Diseases in Central Asia, Department of Cardiology, First Affiliated Hospital of Xinjiang Medical University, Urumqi, China.

Background: Few studies have examined the relationship between nutritional status, as assessed by the Prognostic Nutrition Index (PNI), and incident cardiovascular mortality and all-cause mortality, particularly in hypertensive patients. This study aimed to examine the association between PNI and cardiovascular mortality and all-cause mortality in Americans with hypertension.

Methods: Data from this retrospective cohort study were obtained from the National Health and Nutrition Examination (NHANES) 1999-2016.

TransferBAN-Syn: a transfer learning-based algorithm for predicting synergistic drug combinations against echinococcosis.

Front Genet

January 2025

Key Laboratory of Intelligent Computing and Signal Processing, School of Artificial Intelligence, Anhui University, Hefei, China.

Echinococcosis is a zoonotic parasitic disease caused by the larvae of echinococcus tapeworms infesting the human body. Drug combination therapy is highly valued for the treatment of echinococcosis because of its potential to overcome resistance and enhance the response to existing drugs. Traditional methods of identifying drug combinations via biological experimentation is costly and time-consuming.

Aim: The aim of our study was to assess the impact of high body mass index (BMI) on type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in different Socio-Demographic Development Index (SDI) regions using data from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2021 study.

Methods: Using data from the GBD study, the burden of disease for T2DM was measured by analyzing the age-standardized disability-adjusted life year rate (ASDR) and age-standardized mortality rate (ASMR) for type 2 diabetes due to high BMI and the associated estimated annual percentage change (EAPC). Decomposition analyses, frontier analyses, and predictive models were used to analyze changes and influencing factors for each metric.
