Catalytic aerobic oxidation of phenyl hydroxycarbamate 1 and 1-hydroxy-3-phenylurea 2 using CuCl2 and 2-ethyl-2-oxazoline in methanol gave acyl nitroso species in situ, which were trapped in nitroso-Diels-Alder (NDA) reactions with various dienes to afford the corresponding cycloadducts in high yields (90-98%). Competing ene products were also present for dienes containing both alkene π-bonds and allylic σ-bonds, and the ene yields are higher with 1 than with 2. The use of the chiral hydroxamic acid, (R)-1-hydroxy-3-(1-phenylethylurea) 3 (same conditions) gave NDA cycloadducts in high yields (97-99%) with no ene product from 2,3-dimethyl-1,3-butadiene.

The purpose of this clinical trial was to evaluate the effect of 1 year of daily application of 10% w/v CPP-ACP (casein phosphopeptide-amorphous calcium phosphate) paste in addition to regular toothbrushing with fluoridated toothpaste on the remineralization of enamel carious lesions in preschool children using quantitative light-induced fluorescence (QLF). A total of 103 Thai children (aged 2(1)/2-3(1)/2 years) with high caries risk who had at least 1 enamel carious lesion (ICDAS 1-3) on the labial surface of the upper anterior teeth were assigned to receive either CPP-ACP paste (n = 53) or placebo control (n = 50) following toothbrushing with fluoridated toothpaste after lunch at school. QLF measurement was performed at baseline, 6 months and 1 year.

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to develop a new compound to overcome influenza epidemics and pandemics as well as drug resistance.

Methods: We synthesized a new compound carrying: (i) Neu5Acα2-6Galβ1-4GlcNAc (6SLN) for targeting immutable haemagglutinins (HAs) unless switched from human-type receptor preference; (ii) an acyl chain (lipo) for locking the compound with the viral HA via hydrophobic interactions; and (iii) a flexible poly-α-L-glutamic acid (PGA) for enhancing the compound solubility and for coating the viral surface, precluding accessibility of the PGA-coated virus to the negatively charged sialic acid on the host cell surface.

Results: 6SLN-lipo PGA appears to subvert binding of pandemic H1 and seasonal H3 HAs to receptors, as assessed by using guinea pig erythrocytes, which is critical for virus entry into host cells for multiplication.

CYP2A6, CYP2B6, and UGT1A9 genetic polymorphisms and treatment response after a three-day course of artesunate-mefloquine was investigated in 71 Burmese patients with uncomplicated Plasmodium falciparum malaria. Results provide evidence for the possible link between CYP2A6 and CYP2B6 polymorphisms and plasma concentrations of artesunate/dihydroartemisinin and treatment response. In one patient who had the CYP2A6*1A/*4C genotype (decreased enzyme activity), plasma concentration of artesunate at one hour appeared to be higher, and the concentration of dihydroartemisinin was lower than for those carrying other genotypes (415 versus 320 ng/mL).
