Purpose: Technology-enabled care, including the use of mobile health (mHealth), is emerging as a viable hearing health care delivery method. While the integration of mHealth with adult populations currently supports a wide array of hearing services, a better understanding of the implementation across the lifespan is needed. Literature surrounding the unique population of adolescent hearing aid users is currently lacking.

Background And Aims: Caregiver-delivered programs are a recommended best practice to support young autistic children. While research has extensively explored children's outcomes quantitatively, minimal qualitative research has been conducted to understand caregivers' perspectives of program outcomes for themselves and their children. Hearing directly from caregivers is an important step in ensuring these programs are meeting the needs of those who use them.

Purpose: More Than Words® (MTW) is a caregiver-mediated intervention program led by a speech-language pathologist (SLP) who teaches caregivers strategies to support their autistic child's early social communication and play development. The program includes group sessions composed of multiple families with children of varying profiles. We explored whether caregiver experiences and perceived outcomes of the virtual MTW program differed depending on the child's age and social communication stage.

Programs Promoting Virtual Social Connections and Friendships for Youth with Disabilities: A Scoping Review.

Phys Occup Ther Pediatr

October 2023

Department of Occupational Science and Occupational Therapy, University of Toronto, Toronto, Canada.

Aims: This scoping review explores what is known about programs that support youth with physical and developmental disabilities to create virtual social connections as a means toward friendships.

Methods: Peer-reviewed studies were searched in six electronic databases: CINAHL, EMBASE, ERIC, MEDLINE, PsycINFO, and Scopus. Two reviewers screened articles that described programs in which participants, ages 8-20, interacted with others online, and reported outcomes related to virtual social connections and friendships in their personal social networks.

Purpose: The COVID-19 pandemic required most pediatric rehabilitation programs to shift to a virtual delivery format without the benefits of evidence to support this transition. Our study explored families' experiences participating virtually in , a program for parents of autistic children, with the goal of generating new evidence to inform both virtual service delivery and program development.

Method: Twenty-one families who recently completed a virtual program participated in a semistructured interview.

Patient and surgical factors that affect the development of velopharyngeal insufficiency.

J Plast Reconstr Aesthet Surg

October 2022

Associate Professor, Division of Plastic Surgery, Department of Surgery, Western University, London, ON, Canada. Electronic address:

Velopharyngeal insufficiency (VPI) is a complication that occurs following cleft palate (CP) repair, and the patient/surgical factors that contribute to the development of VPI have not been completely described. The objectives of this study were to identify patient and surgical factors that may increase the risk of development of VPI and to identify whether there are any factors that predispose patients to the development of VPI that requires surgery versus VPI that resolves with non-operative management. Data was prospectively collected for all non-syndromic patients with a CP undergoing primary CP repair by a single surgeon between 2002 and 2018.

Surgical interventions in velopharyngeal dysfunction: comparative perceptual speech and nasometric outcomes for three techniques.

J Otolaryngol Head Neck Surg

February 2022

Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, Children's Hospital, London Health Sciences Centre, Victoria Hospital, Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry, University of Western Ontario, 800 Commissioners Road East, London, ON, N6A 5W9, Canada.

Background: The aim of this study was to evaluate speech outcomes following surgical intervention for velopharyngeal dysfunction (VPD). Perceptual speech outcome data were subsequently analyzed in conjunction with patient factors such as congenital abnormalities, presence of cleft lip and/or palate, and age of repair. We hope to aid in the eventual creation of treatment algorithms for VPD, allowing practitioners to tailor surgical technique selection to patient factors.

Purpose: To explore solution-focused coaching (SFC) as a means to enhance pediatric rehabilitation practitioners' development of listening skills.

Methods: Six clinicians each participated in two SFC sessions with an experienced coach who used a practice model developed for pediatric rehabilitation (SFC-peds). The transcribed interviews were analyzed by inductive content analysis to identify the coach's use of relational strategies and the nature of what was being co-constructed in the sessions.

The purpose of this evidence-to-practice commentary is to provide strategies for sustaining solution-focused coaching (SFC) training outcomes and changes to clinical practice at person, team, and organizational levels. In the original study of focus, the research team conducted qualitative interviews with 13 clinical service providers 6 months after completing 2 days of SFC training and used a thematic analysis to explore the benefits and challenges of implementing a SFC approach. The findings indicated that clinicians found the SFC training to be effective and valuable to practice.

This qualitative descriptive study explored perceived impacts of solution-focused coaching in pediatric rehabilitation (SFC-peds) from the viewpoint of experienced therapists. Semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted with six participants (four occupational therapists and two physical therapists) who had incorporated SFC-peds into their practice for three years or longer. Participants were asked to describe perceived differences SFC-peds has made to their clinical practice, service provision, and relationships with clients and families.

Velopharyngeal dysfunction from intranasal substance abuse: Case series and review of literature.

Laryngoscope

December 2018

Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, London Health Science Centre, Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry, Western University.

Objective: Intranasal substance abuse with cocaine or opioids can result in complications involving the midline nasal and oral structures. When the defect involves the velopharyngeal musculature, this leads to velopharyngeal dysfunction (VPD). This article aims to illustrate this clinical entity through a series of four patients and a review of the literature.

Studies have investigated the use of eye-tracking technology to assess cognition in individuals with Rett syndrome, but few have looked at this access method for communication for this group. Loss of speech, decreased hand use, and severe motor apraxia significantly impact functional communication for this population. Eye gaze is one modality that may be used successfully by individuals with Rett syndrome.

While optimizing quality of life (QOL) is a key goal of rehabilitation care, no previous study has reported on what 'QOL' means to youth with chronic health conditions. In addition, no qualitative studies have explored the relationship between QOL and self-determination (SD). Objectives of this qualitative study were to examine: what the terms 'quality of life' and 'self-determination' mean to youth with chronic conditions; the factors these youth think are linked with these concepts; the relationship they see between concepts, the types of future goals youth have and how they view the connection between their SD and these goals.

Purpose: Objectives of this longitudinal study were to examine 3-year trajectories of global perceived quality of life (QOL) for youth with chronic health conditions, as obtained from youth and parent reports, and to identify personal and environmental factors associated with the trajectory groups for each perspective.

Methods: Youth with various chronic conditions aged 11-17 years and one of their parents were recruited from eight children's treatment centers. Latent class growth analysis was used to investigate perceived QOL trajectories (separately for youth and parent perspectives) over a 3-year period (four data collection time points spaced 12 months apart).
