Objective: To examine the epidemiology and outcomes of in-hospital cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) among patients with cirrhosis.
Methods: We used the Texas Inpatient Public Use Data File to identify hospitalizations aged ≥ 18 years with and without cirrhosis during 2009-2014 and those in each group who have undergone in-hospital CPR. Short-term survival (defined as absence of hospital mortality or discharge to hospice) following in-hospital CPR was examined.

Objective: To examine the hospital-level variation in intensive care unit (ICU) utilization and quantify the relative contribution of patient and hospital characteristics versus individual hospital factors to the variation in ICU admission rates among pediatric hospitalizations with diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA).
Methods: The Texas Inpatient Public Use Data File was used to identify hospitalizations of state residents aged 1 month to 19 years with a primary diagnosis of DKA between 2005 and 2014. Multilevel, mixed-effects logistic regression modeling was performed to examine the association of patient- and hospital-level factors with ICU admission.

Poor nutrition during pregnancy is a worldwide public health problem. Maternal nutrient reduction (MNR) is associated with maternal and fetal stress and a sex-dependent decrease in nonhuman primate (NHP) cognitive performance. Early life stress potentiates epileptogenesis in a sex-specific manner, and temporal lobe (TL) epilepsy is associated with neurocognitive disorders.

Objectives: To examine population awareness of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) hepatitis C virus (HCV) testing recommendation for the 1945 to 1965 birth cohort and explore the factors associated with awareness of the testing recommendation, its association with HCV testing, and respondents' data sources about the recommendation.
Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted to assess awareness of the CDC birth cohort testing recommendation among adults born 1945-1965 who were managed at a single academic center's internal medicine clinics or by visiting a local health fair. Data were collected on respondents' demographics and HCV-related domains, including risk factors, awareness, data sources, prior testing, and interest in information about testing.

Aims: Ectopic fat is a recognized contributor to insulin resistance and metabolic dysfunction, while the role of fat deposition inside intestinal wall tissue remains understudied. We undertook this study to directly quantify and localize intramural fat deposition in duodenal tissue and determine its association with adiposity.
Methods: Duodenal tissues were collected from aged (21.

Imaging of placental tissues is a difficult task, because of specific for this organ complex multicellular and 3D tissue structure. The tissue clearing systems (X-CLARITY) system is a valuable tool for the examining the expression of molecular pathways in whole tissues and organs, originally developed for brain imaging. In the present report, we utilized this technology for the examination of placental vasculature and protein expression in perfused human placental tissue.

Purpose: To investigate the patterns and predictors of palliative care (PC) utilization across ICU- and non ICU-managed patients with end-stage liver disease (ESLD) during end-of-life hospitalization.
Materials And Methods: The Texas Inpatient Public Use Data File was used to perform a retrospective, population-based cohort study of patients with ESLD and end-of-life hospitalization during 2005-2014. PC use among ICU- and non ICU-managed patients was examined.

Introduction: Gut microbial communities are critical players in the pathogenesis of obesity. Pregnancy is associated with increased bacterial load and changes in gut bacterial diversity. Sparse data exist regarding composition of gut microbial communities in obesity combined with pregnancy.

Background: The short-term outcomes of patients with cystic fibrosis (CF) surviving critical illness were not examined systematically.
Objectives: To determine the factors associated with and variation in rates of routine home discharge among ICU-managed adult CF patients.
Methods: Predictors of routine home discharge and its hospital-level variation were examined in ICU-managed adults with cystic fibrosis in Texas during 2004-2013.

Background: The population-level demand for critical care services among the homeless (H) remains unknown, with only sparse data on the characteristics and outcomes of those managed in the ICU.
Methods: The Texas Inpatient Public Use Data File and annual federal reports were used to identify H hospitalizations and annual estimates of the H population between 2007 and 2014. The incidence of ICU admissions in the H population, the characteristics of ICU-managed H, and factors associated with their short-term mortality were examined.

Oral contraceptives have long been associated with liver injury. However, very little attention is paid to the metabolic side effects of hormone-releasing intrauterine devices (IUDs). These devices are generally considered safe and commonly used.

The Old World non-human primates (NHP) - baboons (Papio spp.) share similarities with humans regarding fetal and placental development and some pregnancy-related complications. Information about the mechanism of birth and complications arising during parturition in these species is relatively sparse.

Introduction: Hemophagocytic syndrome or hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis is a rare condition characterized by excessive inflammation that is thought to be caused by the absence of normal downregulation of activated macrophages and lymphocytes. The treatment of hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis can depend on whether it is primary or secondary. In secondary hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis, the treatment can be directed according to the cause.

BACKGROUND Opportunistic infections may occur when patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) are treated with tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha inhibitors. With the increasing use of new immunosuppressant drugs, the incidence of opportunistic or atypical infections is also increasing, including with Nocardia spp. A high level of awareness of atypical infections is warranted in immunosuppressed patients.

Objective: Available reports on critically ill adults with cystic fibrosis (CF) suggest improving short-term outcomes. However, there is marked heterogeneity in reported findings, with studies mostly based on single-centered data, limiting generalizability. We sought to examine population-level patterns of demand for critical care resources, and the characteristics, resource utilization, and outcomes of ICU-managed adults with CF.

Background: The condition termed cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome (CHS) was characterized a decade ago by Allen et al. and includes cyclic episodes of nausea and vomiting and the learned behavior of hot bathing in individuals with chronic cannabis abuse. During pregnancy, the differential diagnosis of this syndrome is challenging, since it can be masked by typical symptoms of early pregnancy or by hyperemesis gravidarum, a complication of early pregnancy associated with excessive nausea and vomiting.
