August 2024

Department of Pharmacology and Neuroscience, Garrison Institute on Aging, Center of Excellence for Translational Neuroscience and Therapeutics, Texas Tech University Health Science Center, Lubbock, TX 79424, USA.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a condition in the brain that is marked by a gradual and ongoing reduction in memory, thought, and the ability to perform simple tasks. AD has a poor prognosis but no cure yet. Therefore, the need for novel models to study its pathogenesis and therapeutic strategies is evident, as the brain poorly recovers after injury and neurodegenerative diseases and can neither replace dead neurons nor reinnervate target structures.

January 2025

School of Biological Sciences, Georgia Institute of Technology, Emory Children's Cystic Fibrosis Center, and Center for Microbial Dynamics and Infection, Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, GA, USA.

Biofilms are complex microbial communities that have a critical function in many natural ecosystems, industrial settings as well as in recurrent and chronic infections. Biofilms are highly heterogeneous and dynamic assemblages that display complex responses to varying environmental factors, and those properties present substantial challenges for their study and control. In recent years, there has been a growing interest in developing improved biofilm models to offer more precise and comprehensive representations of these intricate systems.

Drug reactions with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms (DRESS) syndrome and Stevens-Johnson syndrome-toxic epidermal necrolysis (SJS-TEN) are reactive entities of aberrant cytotoxic immunologic reactions to exogenous medications. While they are conventionally seen as distinct, separate conditions, we present a case of a rare evolution of DRESS syndrome into SJS-TEN in the setting of simultaneous amoxicillin-clavulanate initiation and long-term sildenafil use in a 66-year-old South Asian female with a known history of prior DRESS syndrome and pulmonary arterial hypertension. We discuss the conditions leading to her unique clinical presentation and provide considerations for future clinical encounters.

Redox Regulation of K Channel: Role of Thioredoxin.

Antioxid Redox Signal

November 2024

Department of Internal Medicine, Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, Lubbock, Texas, USA.

Potassium channels regulate the influx and efflux of K ions in various cell types that generate and propagate action potential associated with excitation, contraction, and relaxation of various cell types. Although redox active cysteines are critically important for channel activity, the redox regulation of K channels by thioredoxin (Trx) has not been systematically reviewed. Redox regulation of K channel is now increasingly recognized as drug targets in the pathological condition of several cardiovascular disease processes.

Background And Hypothesis: Osteochondral allograft (OCA) transplantation is a well-described technique for the treatment of large, engaging Hill-Sachs lesions (HSLs). Traditionally, OCAs are size-matched to the defect, which can be expensive and time-consuming, and the majority of described techniques require an open approach. Recently, an all-arthroscopic approach to Hill-Sachs OCA transplantation using premade plugs was described, eliminating the need for size-matching and graft harvest.
