Background: The incidence of microscopic colitis has increased over time. To date, there is no specific biomarker for microscopic colitis, and the diagnosis relies on histopathological tissue obtained during colonoscopy which is an invasive and costly procedure. Unlike Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, the utility of fecal calprotectin in diagnosing or monitoring microscopic colitis has not been established, and studies on the role of fecal calprotectin in microscopic colitis are limited.

The diagnosis of solitary mastocytoma is usually made clinically, however, atypical presentations may obscure the diagnosis. We present a unique case of solitary cutaneous mastocytoma in an 11-month-old male initially misdiagnosed as atopic dermatitis; the diagnosis was obscured due to the development of an allergic contact dermatitis most likely secondary to topical medications that were being applied to the lesion. The diagnosis of solitary cutaneous mastocytoma is made based on lesion morphology, Darier's sign, and lack of systemic involvement.

Key Clinical Message: Infective endocarditis should be considered in any febrile individual with acute onset neurological symptoms. If suspicion is high, a negative brain computed tomography does not virtually exclude embolism, and magnetic resonance imaging is warranted.

Abstract: A diagnosis of infective endocarditis (IE) is often delayed, particularly in those infected with unusual organisms.

The foramen ovale is a structure that allows for the extracranial passage of multiple significant intracranial structures, most notably the mandibular branch of the trigeminal nerve (CN V). Here we report the case of a 12-year-old male who presented to the emergency department (ED) with a two-day history of nausea and emesis and a one-day history of altered mental status. Prior to presentation, he started speaking only Spanish, which was unusual because he primarily speaks English.

Pulmonary artery catheterization is a diagnostic procedure in which a catheter is inserted through a central vein and advanced toward the pulmonary artery to measure right atrial, right ventricular, and pulmonary artery pressures, estimate cardiac output, identify intracardiac shunts, and measure pulmonary vascular resistance. Hemodynamic measurements can provide a better understanding of the pathophysiology of heart failure and pulmonary hypertension, but their proper assessment and optimal use can be challenging due to differences in techniques that can lead to differences in conclusions and therapeutic management strategies. In this review, we will discuss right heart catheterization and its role in clinical practice (e.

Unlabelled: This study hypothesized that elevated glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) levels are associated with abnormal right heart catheterization (RHC) hemodynamic parameters in patients with heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) and no prior diagnosis of diabetes.

Methods: Retrospective cohort study of adult patients with HFrEF and no prior diagnosis of diabetes who underwent RHC and had HbA1c levels measured 30 days before or after the RHC. This study excluded patients who had received blood transfusions within 90 days prior to HbA1c measurement and patients with known diabetes.

Restrictive cardiomyopathy secondary to cardiac amyloidosis is an underdiagnosed, but treatable, cause of heart failure involving an extracellular deposition of misfolded protein. Hereby, we report a case of a female patient with history of nephrotic syndrome for 1 year who subsequently presented with symptoms of heart failure. The findings on cardiac imaging supported the suspicion of cardiac amyloidosis.

Detergents are extensively used for membrane protein manipulation. Membrane proteins solubilized in conventional detergents are prone to denaturation and aggregation, rendering downstream characterization of these bio-macromolecules difficult. Although many amphiphiles have been developed to overcome the limited efficacy of conventional detergents for protein stabilization, only a handful of novel detergents have so far proved useful for membrane protein structural studies.

Background The mechanisms linking menopausal age and heart failure (HF) incidence are controversial. We investigated for heterogeneity by obesity on the relationship between menopausal age and HF incidence. Methods and Results Using postmenopausal women who attended the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities Study Visit 4, we estimated hazard ratios of incident HF associated with menopausal age using Cox proportional hazards models, testing for effect modification by obesity and adjusting for HF risk factors.
