Despite its growing popularity, the implementation of Trauma-Informed Care (TIC) in standard medical practices remains insufficient. A workshop, featuring role-playing scenarios and individual self-reflection exercises, was developed to enhance compassion among health care providers. The workshop was created by a multidisciplinary team of community pediatricians, pediatric intensivists, psychologists, and palliative care physicians, was structured around key elements and principles of TIC, and was based on actual patient encounters.

Polyarteritis nodosa (PAN) is a connective tissue disease that affects arteries, causing necrotizing inflammation that can weaken the arterial walls, dilatation into aneurysms, and rupture in some cases. We present a case of a male with acute abdomen from aneurysmal rupture. The 48-year-old patient with a history of polysubstance use including cocaine and methamphetamines was admitted for acute hypoxic respiratory failure secondary to coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pneumonia and treated with broad-spectrum antibiotics and steroids.

Mixed connective tissue disease (MCTD) is a systemic autoimmune disease with features overlapping multiple autoimmune disorders. One study found that over 55% of patients with MCTD experienced neuropsychiatric symptoms, the most common of which was an "aseptic meningitis-like syndrome." We present a case of a 17-year-old adolescent girl presenting with abnormal speech and behavior, auditory hallucinations, and paranoid delusions after an isolated episode of fever.

Congestive heart failure (CHF) is associated with significant morbidity and mortality. There has been renewed interest in using thrombo-inflammatory markers as prognostic tools in patients with CHF. To determine if thrombo-inflammatory markers are independent risk factors for 28-day mortality in hospitalized CHF patients, we retrospectively analyzed admission data extracted from 2008 consecutive patients admitted with a diagnosis of CHF to Zigong Fourth People's Hospital.

Background: This study aimed to determine the clinical impact of wound management technique on surgical site infection (SSI), hospital length of stay (LOS), and mortality in emergent colorectal surgery.

Methods: A prospective observational study (2021-2023) of urgent or emergent colorectal surgery patients at 15 institutions was conducted. Pediatric patients and traumatic colorectal injuries were excluded.

The goal of this study was to inform standards of best practice in the use of cultured epidermal autograft (CEA), manufactured in the United States, for the treatment of patients with severe burns. The study was designed using the modified Delphi technique, a method for structuring group communication among experts to promote the development of consensus-based recommendations. Known areas of variability related to the stages of CEA treatment were identified by literature review prior to the study and were confirmed through qualitative interview with the experts.

Rotational atherectomy (RA) is used to address complex calcified coronary lesions but data regarding the association between gender and outcomes of patients who underwent RA remain uncertain. We aimed to investigate the short- and long-term outcomes of patients who underwent RA based on gender. A systematic literature search was performed in PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane databases from its inception until August 2023 for relevant studies.

Article Synopsis
  • The study analyzed the human microbiome from four body sites in 86 participants over six years to understand its relationship with health and disease.
  • It found that microbiome stability varies by body site, with stool and oral microbiomes being more stable than those from skin and nasal areas, primarily influenced by host interactions.
  • The research highlights that individual-specific bacterial taxa are more stable and that changes in microbiome dynamics, especially in insulin-resistant individuals, can indicate disruptions related to metabolic diseases.

Introduction: Increasing age is known to be associated with increased risk for postoperative morbidity and mortality, however, the goal of this study was to determine if an increase in age correlates to differences in surgical outcomes for elective ventral hernia repair.

Methods: Retrospective cohort study using American College of Surgeons NSQIP database from 2016 to 2020. Included diagnosis codes were laparoscopic or open incisional or ventral hernia repairs, categorized into three age groups: 18-64y, 65-74y, and ≥75y.

The advantages of long-acting injectable antipsychotics (LAIs) in schizophrenia are well studied. However, forensic involvement is common in schizophrenia, and incarcerated individuals are often excluded from clinical trials. Nonadherence and oral medication diversion in forensic populations with schizophrenia, and the relationship between antipsychotic nonadherence and crime support LAI utilization in this subset of patients.

Article Synopsis
  • A study was conducted on male and female rats to investigate how diabetes medications interact with nicotine consumption after being placed on a high-fat diet (HFD) or regular diet (RD) for 4 weeks, followed by insulin resistance testing.
  • The rats that were on the high-fat diet displayed higher nicotine intake compared to those on the regular diet, and both female and male rats showed similar insulin resistance after receiving a low dose of the diabetes medication streptozotocin (STZ).
  • The findings indicated that insulin administration normalized nicotine intake in HFD-fed rats, suggesting that insulin may effectively manage excessive nicotine consumption in individuals with diabetes.

A 14-year-old male patient was successfully treated with the reamer irrigator aspirator for femur intramedullary rod preparation after sustaining right and left closed femur fractures because of an all-terrain vehicle accident. In patients already categorized as high risk for fat embolism syndrome, such as those with bilateral femur fractures, reaming both femora greatly increases the likelihood of this complication. The reamer irrigator aspirator provides an effective tool that potentially mitigates the risk of fat embolism syndrome in pediatric patients with this type of orthopedic trauma.
