Objective: To examine sociodemographic differences in concussion symptom reporting, among young children by race/ethnicity, sex, and age at initial presentation to guide potential interventions for children from different backgrounds.
Method: Participants were elementary-age children (ages 5 to 12 years; = 392) who sustained a concussion within 30 days of specialty concussion clinic visit. Independent variables were self-defined race/ethnic group, participants' sex, and age.

Case: This is a case of a 6-year-old patient diagnosed with Gorham-Stout disease (GSD), a rare lymphangiogenic skeletal disorder, localized to the left femur. Initial nonoperative treatment with pharmaceuticals and bracing was unsuccessful. We describe a definitive operative treatment with radical femoral resection and a modified rotationplasty technique through a tibiopelvic rotational hip arthroplasty.

Background: Osteochondritis dissecans (OCD) of the knee is a focal idiopathic alteration of subchondral bone and/or its precursor with risk for instability and disruption of adjacent cartilage. Treatment options focused on preventing premature osteoarthritis vary depending on multiple patient and lesion characteristics, including lesion mobility.
Purpose: To differentiate lesion mobility before arthroscopy using a multivariable model that includes patient demographic characteristics and physical examination findings.

Background: The incidence of severe adverse events in children with SARS-CoV-2 undergoing anaesthesia has not been well established. We examined the relationship between SARS-CoV-2 infection and severe perioperative adverse events in children.
Methods: This multicentre (21 North American institutions), retrospective cohort study included children <18 years old, with American Society of Anesthesiologists physical status (ASA PS) of 1-4 and non-severe SARS-CoV-2, who underwent general anaesthesia between April 1, 2020, and March 31, 2021.

Background: It is unclear how levels of sport participation have changed among adolescents in the United States (US) in recent years, particularly considering evidence of increasing sport professionalization and attrition.
Purpose: To evaluate the differences and trends in single- and multiple-team sport participation among US high school students between 1999 and 2019.
Study Design: Descriptive epidemiology study.

Purpose: The pathomorphology of Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease (LCPD) is a key contributor to poor long-term outcomes such as hip pain, femoroacetabular impingement, and early-onset osteoarthritis. Plain radiographs, commonly used for research and in the clinic, cannot accurately represent the full extent of LCPD deformity. The purpose of this study was to develop and evaluate a methodological framework for three-dimensional (3D) statistical shape modeling (SSM) of the proximal femur in LCPD.

Osteoclasts are bone resorbing cells that are essential to maintain skeletal integrity and function. While many of the growth factors and molecular signals that govern osteoclastogenesis are well studied, how the metabolome changes during osteoclastogenesis is unknown. Using a multifaceted approach, we identified a metabolomic signature of osteoclast differentiation consisting of increased amino acid and nucleotide metabolism.

Background: Severity of illness determination for children with acute hematogenous osteomyelitis should be accomplished during the earliest stages of evaluation to guide treatment and establish prognosis. This study objectively defines an outcome of complicated osteomyelitis and explores an illness severity-based model with an improved ability to predict this outcome as soon and accurately as possible, comparing it to existing models.
Methods: Children with Staphylococcus aureus acute hematogenous osteomyelitis (n = 438) were retrospectively studied to identify adverse events and predictors of severity.

Background: Previous literature suggests that lingering concussion symptoms may be influenced by psychological factors. The relationship of posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) during recovery with pre-existing/injury related factors and concussion symptomology is not fully understood. Identification of factors contributing to symptoms of posttraumatic stress may provide guidance to improve treatment following concussion.

Background: A recent study has reported that the radiographic measurement of posterior tibial slope (PTS) is larger in male pediatric patients with tibial spine fractures (TSF) than in controls. However, they found no difference in PTS between female patients and controls.
Purpose: (1) To identify whether PTS is larger in female pediatric patients with TSF than in female controls and (2) to validate the relationship between PTS and pediatric TSF in male patients.

Purpose: To determine whether preservation of blood supply to the index metacarpophalangeal joint decreases the rate of physeal arrest.
Methods: A retrospective review of 41 pollicized digits in 35 patients with 2-year minimum radiographic follow-up was conducted at a single institution. Other complications evaluated included nonunion at the pollicized digit base and clinical instability at the new carpometacarpal joint.

Background: Shortening of midshaft clavicle fractures has been described as a critical fracture characteristic to guide treatment. The degree to which shortening may change in the initial weeks following injury has not been well studied. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the change in shortening of adolescent clavicle fractures in the first 2 weeks following injury.

Background: Optimal treatment of completely displaced midshaft clavicular fractures in adolescents remains controversial, with some favoring surgical management and others favoring a nonoperative approach. Few studies have comprehensively assessed longer-term nonoperative outcomes.
Purpose: To prospectively assess patient-reported outcomes (PROs) and radiographic remodeling ≥5 years after injury in teenagers undergoing nonoperative treatment of completely displaced clavicular fractures.

Background: Periacetabular osteotomy (PAO) is an effective surgical procedure for managing acetabular dysplasia. The purpose of this study was to analyze the biomechanical properties of novel PAO constructs that incorporate orthopaedic trauma techniques. We hypothesize that these fixation methods will create a stiffer construct that tolerates higher loads to failure.

Background: Spondylothoracic dysostosis (STD), also known as Jarcho-Levin syndrome (JLS), is a rare autosomal recessive disorder affecting the formation of the spine, characterized by a complete bilateral fusion of the ribs at the costovertebral junction, producing a "crablike" appearance of the thorax. Despite being declared a core indication for a V-osteotomy vertical expandable prosthetic titanium rib (VEPTR) expansion thoracoplasty of the posterior thorax, the natural history of STD in untreated subjects remains poorly documented. In this study, we report radiographic and pulmonary function findings and Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System (PROMIS) and 24-Item Early Onset Scoliosis Questionnaire (EOSQ-24) scores for untreated adult subjects with STD to gain insights into the natural history.

The prevalence of valgus alignment in the pediatric and adolescent PFI population is largely unknown.
Purpose: The aim of this study was to report the prevalence of valgus alignment in adolescent patients presenting with PFI; with secondary assessment of high-grade valgus (zone II or III), coronal asymmetry, and associations of these findings with body mass index (BMI).

Background: As the incidence of childhood obesity continues to rise, so too does the number of obese children who undergo foot surgery. As the childhood obesity epidemic rolls on, pediatric orthopaedic surgeons will encounter obese patients with even greater frequency. Therefore, a comprehensive understanding of the risks associated with obesity is valuable to maximize patient safety.

We generated single haplotype assemblies from a hinny hybrid which significantly improved the gapless contiguity for horse and donkey autosomal genomes and the X chromosomes. We added over 15 Mb of missing sequence to both X chromosomes, 60 Mb to donkey autosomes and corrected numerous errors in donkey and some in horse reference genomes. We resolved functionally important X-linked repeats: the DXZ4 macrosatellite and ampliconic Equine Testis Specific Transcript Y7 (ETSTY7).

Background: Severe adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) can be treated with instrumented fusion, but the number of anchors needed for optimal correction is controversial.
Methods: We conducted a multicenter, randomized study that included patients undergoing spinal fusion for single thoracic curves between 45° and 65°, the most common form of operatively treated AIS. Of the 211 patients randomized, 108 were assigned to a high-density screw pattern and 103, to a low-density screw pattern.
