Racialization and Reproduction: Asian Immigrants and California's Twentieth-Century Eugenic Sterilization Program.

During the twentieth century, state health authorities in California recommended sterilization for over 20,000 individuals held in state institutions. Asian immigrants occupied a marginalized position in racial, gender, and class hierarchies in California at the height of its eugenic sterilization program. Scholars have documented the disproportionate sterilization of other racialized groups, but little research exists connecting the racist, gendered implementation of Asian immigration restriction to the racism and sexism inherent in eugenics.

Hydroxycinnamic Acids and Their Related Synthetic Analogs: An Update of Pharmacological Activities.

Developmental hypoxia has been shown to result in significant changes in cardiovascular development of American alligators and common snapping turtles. These include similar effects on cardiac mass and aspects of cardiovascular function. However, given the distant phylogenetic relationship between crocodilians and chelonians, we hypothesized that snapping turtles would also exhibit differences in the effects of developmental hypoxia on cardiovascular regulation.

Soxhlet (SE), microwave-assisted (MAE) and ultrasound-assisted (UAE) extraction were compared using ten extraction solvents for their efficiency to extract phenolic and flavonoid antioxidants from Eastern Canada propolis. Extracts were compared for total phenolic (TPC) and total flavonoid (TFC) content, and radical scavenging activities. HPSAs are designations that indicate health care provider shortages in primary care, dental health or mental health. Undergraduate research is an emerging focus across campus with limited faculty funding.

Coping and Pre-Licensure Registered Nursing Students: An Integrative Literature Review.

Despite a wealth of information and growing diversity among nursing students, little is known about coping behaviors employed by these students or students educated in diverse environments. The aim of this integrative literature review was to examine what is known about stress, coping, measures of coping, and interventions to enhance coping, and in pre-licensure nursing students. Twenty-six peer-reviewed research articles were included.

Context Matters: Distinct Disease Outcomes as a Result of Crebbp Hemizygosity in Different Mouse Bone Marrow Compartments.

Perturbations in CREB binding protein (CREBBP) are associated with hematopoietic malignancies, including myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS). Mice hemizygous for Crebbp develop myelodysplasia with proliferative features, reminiscent of human MDS/myeloproliferative neoplasm-unclassifiable (MDS/MPN-U), and a proportion goes on to develop acute myeloid leukemia (AML). We have also shown that the Crebbp+/- non-hematopoietic bone marrow microenvironment induces excessive myeloproliferation of wild-type cells.

Teams of unlicensed personnel and registered nurses have provided hospital-based nursing care for decades. Although ineffective teamwork has been associated with poor patient outcomes, little is known of the perspectives of nursing assistive personnel (NAP). The purpose of this study was to gain insights into the perceptions of NAP and professional registered nurses (RNs) on teamwork in acute care.

Antecedent blood pressure as a predictor of cardiovascular disease.

Elevated blood pressure (BP) is associated with greater risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD), and evidence suggests that prior BP levels may be at least as important as current BP in prediction models. We analyzed the determinants of CVD risk in Offspring Framingham Heart Study participants (n = 3344). The baseline Cox model included the traditional risk factors and current systolic BP to predict 20-year risk of CVD (643 events).

Comparison of Academic and Behavioral Performance between Athletes and Non-athletes.

The Toronto Charter for Physical Activity (2010) and several national physical activity plans advocate sports participation as an important part of population targeted physical activity for youth. Emerging research evidence also suggests that sports participation during adolescents is linked to significant positive correlations with academic and behavioral performance. The purpose of this study was to compare academic and behavioral performance between male and female public school athletes (Total N=11,139; 38% Female) and non-athletes (Total N=23,891; 52% Female) in a convenient, ethnicity diverse, sample (grades 7-12) from the state of Texas (USA).

Improving Condom Self-Efficacy and Use among Individuals Living with HIV: The Positive Choices Mapping Intervention.

Few interventions have been designed to improve behavioral outcomes and reduce risk of HIV transmission of individuals living with HIV, most focusing on preventative efforts directed at individuals who are HIV-negative. However, people living with HIV present individual and public health risks (infection with a different strain of HIV, health complications from contracting STD's, continued sexual activity with individuals with unknown HIV status) that have become the focus of intervention efforts. The current paper explores a promising new intervention, The Positive Choices Mapping intervention (PCM), designed to increase condom self-efficacy and use among African American crack cocaine smokers who are living with HIV.

What determines limb selection for reaching?

While motor dominance appears to drive limb selection for reaching movements at the midline and ipsilateral (dominant) side, this study examined the possible determinants associated with what drives the programming of movements in response to stimuli presented in contralateral space. Experiment 1 distinguished between object proximity and a hemispheric bias for using the hand on the same side as the stimulus by comparing imagined and actual reaching with arms uncrossed and crossed. Experiment 2 examined the role of comfort in limb selection via participants reaching for a cube under two conditions: 1- and multiple-df movements.
