The secondary screwworm, Cochliomyia macellaria (Fabricius) (Diptera: Calliphoridae), is a carrion-breeding species of veterinary, medical, and forensic importance. It is very abundant in the Nearctic and Neotropical regions and is one of the most common colonizers of vertebrate remains in the southern United States. Therefore, it is of great evidential value in estimating the minimum time of colonization (TOC) of remains related to forensic investigations.

Extracellular signaling in Dictyostelium.

Int J Dev Biol

July 2020

Department of Biology, Texas A∧M University, College Station, Texas, USA.

In the last few decades, we have learned a considerable amount about how eukaryotic cells communicate with each other, and what it is the cells are telling each other. The simplicity of Dictyostelium discoideum, and the wide variety of available tools to study this organism, makes it the equivalent of a hydrogen atom for cell and developmental biology. Studies using Dictyostelium have pioneered a good deal of our understanding of eukaryotic cell communication.

Species delimitation attempts to match species-level taxonomy with actual evolutionary lineages. Such taxonomic conclusions are typically, but not always, based on patterns of congruence across multiple data sources and methods of analyses. Here, we use this pluralistic approach to species delimitation to help resolve uncertainty in species boundaries of phrynosomatid sand lizards of the genus Holbrookia.

One benefit of Mohs micrographic surgery (MMS) is maximal tissue sparing compared to standard excisional surgery techniques. It also has the highest statistical cure rate for appropriately selected nonmelanoma skin cancers (NMSCs) in cosmetically sensitive areas, making it a preferred choice for many self-referred patients or their referring physicians. Patients and nondermatologist physicians may be unaware of how frequently Mohs surgeons perform complex surgical repairs compared to other specialists.

Nuclear receptor 4A1 (NR4A1) antagonists induce ROS-dependent inhibition of mTOR signaling in endometrial cancer.

Gynecol Oncol

July 2019

Department of Veterinary Physiology and Pharmacology, Texas AM University, College Station, TX 77843, USA. Electronic address:

Objectives: NR4A1 is overexpressed in many solid tumors, and the objectives of this study were to investigate the expression and functional role of this receptor in endometrial cancer cells and demonstrate that NR4A1 antagonist inhibit mTOR.

Methods: Ishikawa and Hec-1B endometrial cells were used as models to investigate the parallel effects of NR4A1 knockdown by RNA interference (siNR4A1) and treatment with bis-indole-derived NR4A1 ligands (antagonists) on cell growth and survival by determining cell numbers and effects on Annexin V staining. Western blot analysis of whole cell lysates was used to determine effects of these treatments on expression of growth promoting, survival and apoptotic genes and mTOR signaling.

Flavonoids as aryl hydrocarbon receptor agonists/antagonists: effects of structure and cell context.

Environ Health Perspect

December 2003

Department of Veterinary Physiology and Pharmacology, Texas AM University, College Station 77843-4466, USA.

Chemoprotective phytochemicals exhibit multiple activities and interact with several cellular receptors, including the aryl hydrocarbon (Ah) receptor (AhR). In this study we investigated the AhR agonist/antagonist activities of the following flavonoids: chrysin, phloretin, kaempferol, galangin, naringenin, genistein, quercetin, myricetin, luteolin, baicalein, daidzein, apigenin, and diosmin. We also investigated the AhR-dependent activities of cantharidin and emodin (in herbal extracts) in Ah-responsive MCF-7 human breast cells, HepG2 human liver cancer cells, and mouse Hepa-1 cells transiently or stably transfected with plasmids expressing a luciferase reporter gene linked to multiple copies of a consensus dioxin-responsive element.
