Different types of digital modalities are currently available for frozen section (FS) evaluation in surgical pathology practice. However, there are limited studies that demonstrate the potential of whole slide imaging (WSI) as a robust digital pathology option for FS FS diagnosis. In the current study, we compared the diagnostic accuracy achieved with WSI to that achieved with Light Microscopy (LM) for evaluating FSs of axillary sentinel lymph nodes (SLNs) and clipped lymph nodes (LNs) from breast cancer patients using two modalities.

The trait-specific timing of accelerated genomic change in the human lineage.

Cell Genom

January 2025

Department of Integrative Biology, The University of Texas at Austin, Austin, TX, USA; Department of Statistics and Data Science, The University of Texas at Austin, Austin, TX, USA. Electronic address:

Humans exhibit distinct characteristics compared to our primate and ancient hominin ancestors. To investigate genomic bursts in the evolution of these traits, we use two complementary approaches to examine enrichment among genome-wide association study loci spanning diseases and AI-based image-derived brain, heart, and skeletal tissue phenotypes with genomic regions reflecting four evolutionary divergence points. These regions cover epigenetic differences among humans and rhesus macaques, human accelerated regions (HARs), ancient selective sweeps, and Neanderthal-introgressed alleles.

Untargeted metabolomics analysis as a potential screening tool for 3-methylglutaconic aciduria syndromes.

Mol Genet Metab

December 2024

Department of Molecular and Human Genetics, Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, TX, USA; Texas Children's Hospital, Houston, TX, USA; BCM-CUHK Center of Medical Genetics, Prince of Wales Hospital, Hong Kong, China.

The 3-methylglutaconic aciduria (3-MGA-uria) syndromes comprise a heterogeneous group of inborn errors of metabolism defined biochemically by detectable elevation of 3-methylglutaconic acid (3-MGA) in the urine. In type 1 (or primary) 3-MGA-uria, distal defects in the leucine catabolism pathway directly cause this elevation. Secondary 3-MGA-uria syndromes, however, are unrelated to leucine metabolism-specific defects but share a common biochemical phenotype of elevated 3-MGA.

Introduction: Molecular alterations in the PI3K/AKT and Ras/Raf/MEK/ERK pathways are frequently observed in patients with endometrial cancers. However, mTOR inhibitors, such as temsirolimus, have modest clinical benefits. In addition to inducing metabolic changes in cells, metformin activates AMPK, which in turn inhibits the mTOR pathway.

Many aspects of human performance require producing sequences of items in serial order. The current study takes a multiple-case approach to investigate whether the system responsible for serial order is shared across cognitive domains, focusing on working memory (WM) and word production. Serial order performance in three individuals with post-stroke language and verbal WM disorders (hereafter persons with aphasia, PWAs) were assessed using recognition and recall tasks for verbal and visuospatial WM, as well as error analyses in spoken and written production tasks to assess whether there was a tendency to produce the correct phonemes/letters in the wrong order.

Dr. Valencia is from the Department of Internal Medicine, John Hopkins Bayview Medical Center, Baltimore, Maryland. Fabiola Ramirez is from the Paul L. Foster School of Medicine, Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, El Paso. Claudia Dubocq-Ortiz is from the University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine, Medical School Campus, San Juan. Dr. Vasquez is from the Department of Dermatology, UT Southwestern Medical Center, Dallas.

Despite having an overall lower lifetime risk for skin cancer, Latine/Hispanic individuals experience increased morbidity and mortality in skin cancer outcomes compared to non-Hispanic White individuals. The reasons for these disparate outcomes are multifactorial, but challenges in early skin cancer detection, limited awareness of risks, and inequitable access to care and/or treatment among this patient population likely are contributory. In this article, we review cutaneous malignancies in the Latine/Hispanic population and explore factors that impact overall prognosis, including unique clinical features, inadequate health coverage, medical mistrust, language barriers, differing cultural perspectives, and inadequate research.
