Skin cancer, particularly melanoma, poses significant challenges due to the heterogeneity of skin images and the demand for accurate and interpretable diagnostic systems. Early detection and effective management are crucial for improving patient outcomes. Traditional AI models often struggle with balancing accuracy and interpretability, which are critical for clinical adoption.

The value and welfare of a performance horse are closely tie to locomotor behaviors, but we lack objective and quantitative measures for these characteristics, and qualitative approaches for assessing gait do not provide measures suitable for large-scale biomechanical research studies. Digital video analysis utilizing artificial intelligence-based strategies promise to meet the need for an economical, accurate, repeatable and objective technique for field quantification of equine locomotion. Here we describe pilot work using a consumer-level digital video camera to capture high-resolution and high-speed videos of horses moving at the trot during mandatory inspections for international-level eventing competitions.

Wildlife species are routinely captured for translocation, general health monitoring, and research-based pursuits to guide wildlife management. Mule deer () were captured for various research projects and management actions in the Trans-Pecos and Panhandle regions of Texas from 2015 to 2019. The objective of this study was to develop hematologic and biochemical parameters for free-ranging mule deer in Texas and to develop a health monitoring system for current and future mule deer population management.

Background: Mammography for the diagnosis of early breast cancer (BC) relies heavily on the identification of breast masses. However, in the early stages, it might be challenging to ascertain whether a breast mass is benign or malignant. Consequently, many deep learning (DL)-based computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) approaches for BC classification have been developed.

Huanglongbing (HLB), also known as citrus greening disease, is a devastating disease of citrus. However, there is no known cure so far. Recently, under Section 24(c) of the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA), a special local need label was approved that allows the trunk injection of antimicrobials such as oxytetracycline (OTC) for HLB management in Florida.

Citrus canker, a highly transmissible bacterial disease, has three major types, with Asiatic canker (Canker A), caused by pv. ( A), being the most widespread and severe, affecting most citrus varieties. A has two mild variants, A* and A with a limited host range, reported in Southwest Asia and Florida, respectively.

Exosomes or so-called natural nanoparticles have recently shown enormous potential for targeted drug delivery systems. Several studies have reported that exosomes as advanced drug delivery platforms offer efficient targeting of chemotherapeutics compared to individual polymeric nanoparticles or liposomes. Taking structural constituents of exosomes, , proteins, nucleic acids, and lipids, into consideration, exosomes are the most promising carriers as genetic messengers and for treating genetic deficiencies or tumor progression.

The prevalence of depression has increased dramatically over the last several decades: it is frequently overlooked and can have a significant impact on both physical and mental health. Therefore, it is crucial to develop an automated detection system that can instantly identify whether a person is depressed. Currently, machine learning (ML) and artificial neural networks (ANNs) are among the most promising approaches for developing automated computer-based systems to predict several mental health issues, such as depression.

Defensive traits are hypothesized to benefit prey by reducing predation risk from a focal predator but come at a cost to the fitness of the prey. Variation in the expression of defensive traits is seen among individuals within the same population, and in the same individual in response to changes in the environment (i.e.

Local adaptation may facilitate range expansion during invasions, but the mechanisms promoting destructive invasions remain unclear. Cheatgrass (), native to Eurasia and Africa, has invaded globally, with particularly severe impacts in western North America. We sequenced 307 genotypes and conducted controlled experiments.

Pronghorn () are considered a keystone species of North American grasslands and an important economic source for many landowners in Texas. Pronghorn restoration projects routinely capture and translocate individuals from surplus populations to restoration areas. The objective of this study was to generate normal hematological and biochemical reference intervals (RI) for free-ranging pronghorn populations in Texas as a health monitoring tool for pronghorn restoration efforts.

Migratory shorebirds are one of the fastest declining groups of North American avifauna. Yet, relatively little is known about how these species select habitat during migration. We explored the habitat selection of Buff-breasted Sandpipers (Calidris subruficollis) during spring and fall migration through the Texas Coastal Plain, a major stopover region for this species.

Despite recent advances in cancer diagnostics and treatment, the mortality associated with lung cancer is still the highest in the world. Late-stage diagnosis, often accompanied by metastasis, is a major contributor to the high mortality rates, emphasizing the urgent need for reliable and readily accessible diagnostic tools that can detect biomarkers unique to lung cancer. Circulating factors, such as circulating tumor DNA and extracellular vesicles, from liquid biopsy have been recognized as diagnostic or prognostic markers in lung cancer.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFDuring spring, migratory birds are required to optimally balance energetic costs of migration across heterogeneous landscapes and weather conditions to survive and reproduce successfully. Therefore, an individual's migratory performance may influence reproductive outcomes. Given large-scale changes in land use, climate, and potential carry-over effects, understanding how individuals migrate in relation to breeding outcomes is critical to predicting how future scenarios may affect populations.

Rural communities have unique mental health needs and challenges which are often related to the uniqueness of the community itself. On a per-capita basis, the investment in rural mental health research is far less than that in urban communities. Added to this, rural communities are often at risk of researchers, based in large urban universities, visiting, conducting the research with minimal engagement with local stakeholders and limited understanding of the community's social-service-environmental context.

Introduction: Citrus is one of the most important fruit crops worldwide, and the root-associated microbiota can have a profound impact on tree health and growth.
Methods: In a collaborative effort, the International Citrus Microbiome Consortium investigated the global citrus root microbiota with samples collected from nine citrus-producing countries across six continents. We analyzed 16S rDNA and ITS2 amplicon sequencing data to identify predominant prokaryotic and fungal taxa in citrus root samples.

Basic data related to population sizes, survival, reproduction, and recruitment are needed throughout their range to inform management and conservation decisions. We collected nilgai fetuses from 3 ranches in southern Texas, including East Foundation's El Sauz and Santa Rosa ranches, and the Norias Division of the King Ranch from 2018-2021.
