Patients who develop acute myeloid leukemia (AML) after having received treatment for myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) or related conditions have particularly poor outcomes. This study analyzed adult patients with newly diagnosed AML who previously had MDS, chronic myelomonocytic leukemia (CMML), or MDS/myeloproliferative neoplasm (MPN) overlap syndrome, and who had received hypomethylating agents, chemotherapy, and/or allogeneic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) for these antecedent disorders. From January 2012 to August 2023, we included 673 patients with a median age of 70 years (range, 19-94); 536 (80%) had transformed from MDS, and the remainder from CMML or MDS-MPN.

The central nervous system (CNS) comprises membranes and barriers that are vital to brain homeostasis. Membranes form a robust shield around neural structures, ensuring protection and structural integrity. At the same time, barriers selectively regulate the exchange of substances between blood and brain tissue, which is essential for maintaining homeostasis.

While extensive work has examined the mechanisms of mitochondrial fission, it remains unclear whether internal mitochondrial proteins in metazoans play a direct role in the process. Previously, the yeast inner membrane protein Mdm33 was shown to be required for normal mitochondrial morphology and has been hypothesized to be involved in mitochondrial fission. However, it is unknown whether Mdm33 plays a direct role, and it is not thought to have a mammalian homolog.

Analytical solutions for acoustic vortex beams radiated by sources with uniform circular amplitude distributions are derived in the paraxial approximation. Evaluation of the Fresnel diffraction integral in the far field of an unfocused source and in the focal plane of a focused source leads to solutions in terms of an infinite series of Bessel functions for orbital numbers ℓ>-2. These solutions are reduced to closed forms for 0≤ℓ≤4, which correspond to orbital numbers commonly used in experiments.

The applications of polymeric membranes have grown rapidly compared to traditional separation technologies due to their energy efficiency and smaller footprint. However, their potential is not fully realized due, in part, to their heterogeneity, which results in a "permeability-selectivity" trade-off for most membrane applications. Inspired by the intricate architecture and excellent homogeneity of biological membranes, bioinspired and biomimetic membranes (BBMs) aim to emulate biological membranes for practical applications.
