Background: Predicting burn-related mortality is vital for family counseling, triage, and resource allocation. Several of the burn-specific mortality prediction scores have been developed, including the Abbreviated Burn Severity Index (ABSI) in 1982. However, these scores are not tested for accuracy to support contemporary estimates of the global burden of burn injury.

Immune checkpoint inhibitors can lead to 'exceptional', durable responses in a subset of persons. However, the molecular basis of exceptional response (ER) to immunotherapy in metastatic clear cell renal cell carcinoma (mccRCC) has not been well characterized. Here we analyzed pretherapy genomic and transcriptomic data in treatment-naive persons with mccRCC treated with standard-of-care immunotherapies: (1) combination of programmed cell death protein and ligand 1 (PD1/PDL1) and cytotoxic T lymphocyte-associated protein 4 inhibitors (IO/IO) or (2) combination of PD1/PDL1 and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) receptor inhibitors (IO/VEGF).

Bioinspired self-flowing wood chemical treatment.

Nat Commun

January 2025

Department of Mechanical Engineering, Advanced Materials and Manufacturing Process Institute (AMMPI), University of North Texas, Denton, TX, USA.

Wood has complex composition and structure, which make it difficult to achieve consistent and controllable treatment. A self-flowing process presented for the chemical treatment of wood is inspired by liquid transportation in trees during photosynthesis and tree growth, whereby liquid in the soil is brought through the natural vessels and/or fiber tracheids. In this process, wood lumbers are placed in a tank containing treatment chemicals such as preservatives, fire retardants, or reactive agents.

Objectives: Drawing on the socioecological model of sleep health, we formally examine the association between neighborhood disorder and sleep efficiency. While most studies focus on direct associations with neighborhood context, we also consider whether the relationship between religious attendance and sleep efficiency varies as a function of neighborhood disorder.

Design: We use ordinary least squares regression to model cross-sectional survey data.

Microscopic polyangiitis (MPA) is a small-vessel vasculitis characterised by systemic infiltration, with a primary focus on the renal and pulmonary systems. One of its more lethal pulmonary manifestations is diffuse alveolar haemorrhage (DAH), although the spectrum of lung pathology in MPA is vast and calls for immediate immunosuppressive therapy. Our case looks at an older woman initially presenting with MPA-induced rapid progressive glomerulonephritis.

EMERGENT RELATIONS AND COMPETING BEHAVIOR: EFFECTS ON INTERRUPTIONS, ACCURACY AND REACTION TIME.

Behav Processes

January 2025

University of North Texas, Department of Behavior Analysis, Neurobehavioral EEG Lab. Electronic address:

This study investigated the impact of engaging in concurrent behaviors on the emergence of untrained stimulus-stimulus relations, specifically examining interruptions, accuracy, and reaction times during test. Six participants completed a computerized matching-to-sample task under three conditions: a baseline condition, a singing condition hypothesized to be incompatible with covert verbal behavior, and a foot tapping condition hypothesized to be compatible with covert verbal behavior. The tempo was kept consistent across both singing and foot tapping tasks.

Department of Radiation Oncology, University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, Dallas, TX, USA; Medical Artificial Intelligence and Automation Laboratory, Department of Radiation Oncology, University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, Dallas, TX, USA. Electronic address:

Background And Purpose: Daily online adaptive radiotherapy (DART) increases treatment accuracy by crafting daily customized plans that adjust to the patient's daily setup and anatomy. The routine application of DART is limited by its resource-intensive processes. This study proposes a novel DART strategy for head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC), automizing the process by propagating physician-edited treatment contours for each fraction.

Many aspects of human performance require producing sequences of items in serial order. The current study takes a multiple-case approach to investigate whether the system responsible for serial order is shared across cognitive domains, focusing on working memory (WM) and word production. Serial order performance in three individuals with post-stroke language and verbal WM disorders (hereafter persons with aphasia, PWAs) were assessed using recognition and recall tasks for verbal and visuospatial WM, as well as error analyses in spoken and written production tasks to assess whether there was a tendency to produce the correct phonemes/letters in the wrong order.

Disparities in Skin Cancer Outcomes in the Latine/Hispanic Population.

Cutis

November 2024

Dr. Valencia is from the Department of Internal Medicine, John Hopkins Bayview Medical Center, Baltimore, Maryland. Fabiola Ramirez is from the Paul L. Foster School of Medicine, Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, El Paso. Claudia Dubocq-Ortiz is from the University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine, Medical School Campus, San Juan. Dr. Vasquez is from the Department of Dermatology, UT Southwestern Medical Center, Dallas.

Despite having an overall lower lifetime risk for skin cancer, Latine/Hispanic individuals experience increased morbidity and mortality in skin cancer outcomes compared to non-Hispanic White individuals. The reasons for these disparate outcomes are multifactorial, but challenges in early skin cancer detection, limited awareness of risks, and inequitable access to care and/or treatment among this patient population likely are contributory. In this article, we review cutaneous malignancies in the Latine/Hispanic population and explore factors that impact overall prognosis, including unique clinical features, inadequate health coverage, medical mistrust, language barriers, differing cultural perspectives, and inadequate research.
