Unlabelled: Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma (NPC) is one of the leading cancers in India's north-eastern (NE) region affecting a section of the population each year. A proportion of the NPC cases are observed to recur even after therapy, indicating the involvement of other factors. We aimed to explore the NPC and Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) burden in the NE region and investigate the prognostic factors for the NPC patients' poor survival and recurrence.

Background: The association of BAX -248 G>A and BCL2 -938 C>A with different cancers created conflicts.  We studied the correlation and the effect of these polymorphisms in patients with Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma (NPC).  Methods: PCR-RFLP and Sanger sequencing were used to detect polymorphisms.

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is a rare malignancy in most parts of the world, but is endemic in some ethnic groups. The association of NPC with the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is firmly established; however, the mechanism is still unclear. TLR9 is well known for its essential role in viral pathogen recognition and activation of innate immunity.

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is one the most confusing and rare malignancy in most part of the world with significantly high occurrence in some populations of Southeast Asia, North Africa and Alaska. Apart from the dietary and environmental factors, NPC is well-associated with Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection in these ethnic groups. However, the internal molecular mechanism(s) for such association in specific populations is not known till date.

Background: We hypothesized that crestal bone loss (CBL) and peri-implant soft tissue inflammation are increased when conventionally-loaded dental implants are placed in cigarette and waterpipe smokers compared to nonsmokers.

Purpose: The present 8-years' follow-up retrospective clinical study evaluated the stability of the conventionally-loaded dental implants placed in cigarette- and waterpipe (narghile) smoking and nonsmoking population group.

Materials And Methods: Self-reported cigarette-smokers, waterpipe users along with never-smokers have been included.

Comparison between the minimum margin defined on preoperative imaging and the final surgical margin after hepatectomy for cancer: how to manage it?

Ann Surg Oncol

March 2008

Department of Oncological Surgery, Institut Gustave Roussy, Tertiary Cancer Center, 39 Rue Camille Desmoulins, 94805, Villejuif, Cédex, France.

Background: The liver surgeon's decision to operate is based on imaging studies. However, no clear practical guidelines are available enabling surgeons to safely predict tumor-free margins after a partial hepatectomy. The aim of this retrospective study is to provide surgeons with simple and easily applicable practical guidelines.

Background: Peritoneal carcinomatosis (PC) is a major disease, currently treated using complete cytoreductive surgery and intraperitoneal chemohyperthermia (IPCH). Morbidity is a significant limitation of this procedure, usually related to the extent of surgery, and hematological toxicity, which is considered as dependent upon the chemotherapy dosage alone. The aim of our study was to investigate whether surgery alone had an impact on the hematological toxicity associated with the standardized drug protocol that we routinely prescribed.
