Linking orthodontic treatment and sleep apnea among adult Indian patients.

Bioinformation

April 2024

Department of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopaedics, Terna Dental College and Hospital, Navi Mumbai, Maharashtra, India.

The differences in the effects of orthodontic treatment on airway and craniocervical posture in patients with OSA (obstructive sleep apnea) having skeletal class II high-angle malocclusion is of interest. Hence, 48 individuals with OSA and skeletal class II high-angle malocclusion were chosen from among all patients in need of orthodontic therapy. Every patients had CBCT (cone beam computed tomography) taken both before and after receiving orthodontic therapy.

Background: When it comes to orthodontic diagnosis and treatment planning, the structures of the upper and lower airway space are crucial because of the role they play in craniofacial development.

Aim: The major objective of this study was to evaluate the accuracy of lateral cephalogram in the evaluation of upper and lower pharyngeal space by comparing it to clinical usage of cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) in quantifying the 3D morphology of the pharyngeal airway.

Methods And Materials: In total, 70 patients were included in the study.

Frequently, adolescents exhibit instances of immature necrotic teeth, which are identifiable by their slender root walls and unclosed root tips. The lack of a natural narrowing near the root's end creates difficulty when using standard endodontic procedures, making the effective sealing of the immature root canal difficult or impractical. Revascularization therapy surfaces as a prospective strategy for addressing the management of undeveloped, non-vital, immature, necrotic teeth.

Apical root resorption, which is characterised as a biological or abnormal phenomenon that shortens the length of the root apex, is additional typical iatrogenic impact of orthodontic tooth movement that may jeopardise the effectiveness of treatment and tooth lifespan. The main goals of the current retrospective investigation were to assess the dimensions of alveolar bone alterations that come along with orthodontic movement and to look into the frequency and extent of resorption of root in maxillary incisors across categories that were similarly managed with clear aligners (OCA) and fixed appliances (OFA) using CBCT. The study included 50 subjects who were divided into two categories with 25 study subjects in each category.

Article Synopsis
  • This study investigates the effectiveness of adding 1% metformin to demineralized freeze-dried bone allograft (DFDBA) in treating intrabony defects in patients with chronic periodontitis.
  • 20 sites were evaluated, with 10 receiving DFDBA alone and 10 receiving DFDBA with metformin, showing significant improvements in clinical parameters over 9 months for both treatments.
  • However, there were no significant differences between the two groups, indicating that metformin does not provide additional benefits over DFDBA alone for periodontal regeneration.

Concentrated growth factor (CGF) is a newer form of autologous platelet concentrate with an extra fibrin matrix and more growth factors than that observed with platelet-rich fibrin, due to its different centrifugation process. This case series evaluates the early wound healing with CGF membrane as a periodontal bandage after depigmentation. Three individuals were selected for a split-mouth study.

Background: Abnormal angiogenesis hamper blood vessel proliferation implicated in various biological processes. The current method available to clinically treat patients to enhance angiogenesis is administering the angiogenic growth factors. However, due to a lack of spatiotemporal control over the substantial release of these factors, numerous drawbacks are faced such as leaky vasculature.

Background: Successful outcome of endodontic treatment depends on chemomechanical preparation of the tooth. However, during canal preparation, debris may extrude through the apical foramen causing postoperative complications. The aim of this study is to evaluate and compare the amount of apically extruded debris during the pulpectomy procedure in primary molar teeth using two different rotary files and hand files.

Plasmacytoma is a neoplastic proliferation of monoclonal plasma cells, which can present clinically as solitary bone neoplasm, extramedullary plasmacytoma, and multiple myeloma. The biological behavior of these tumors is variable from periods of clinical latency to rapid growth and progression from localized forms to more disseminated multiple myeloma. We present the case of solitary plasmacytoma of the mandible with rare bilateral involvement in a 65-year-old female patient.
