Article Synopsis
  • Sleep apnea (SA) and both subjective (SSD) and objective sleep durations (OSD) are linked to atrial fibrillation (AF), but their combined effects and the discrepancies between SSD and OSD haven't been thoroughly examined.
  • A study using polysomnography and actigraphy found that a significant portion of participants had moderate-to-severe SA and that those with longer OSD had fewer hours of SSD, potentially indicating poor sleep quality.
  • Findings revealed that those with higher SA severity and longer OSD were more likely to experience AF recurrence, suggesting that long exposure to oxygen fluctuations during sleep contributes to this risk.

Article Synopsis
  • - This study identifies an ancient SVA_D retrotransposon as the novel cause of occipital horn syndrome (OHS), a genetic disorder linked to copper metabolism due to ATP7A dysfunction.
  • - Researchers detected a 2.8 kb insertion in the patient's gene that disrupted normal mRNA splicing, which was confirmed using long-read sequencing techniques.
  • - Treatment with antisense oligonucleotides restored proper gene expression and reduced copper accumulation in patient cells, highlighting the SVA_D retrotransposon's unexpected role in rare genetic diseases.

We report the case of a 26-year-old male patient with chronic myelogenous leukemia in the chronic phase with the e13a3 (b2a3) variant of BCR-ABL1 fusion. Despite the presence of Philadelphia chromosome and fluorescence in situ hybridization-detectable BCR-ABL1 fusion signals, quantitative measurement of BCR-ABL1 on the ABL1 using a reverse primer in exon 2 of ABL1 failed to detect the fusion transcripts. PCR direct sequencing analysis with a sense primer for exon 13 of BCR and an antisense primer for exon 3 of ABL1 revealed the e13a3 variant of BCR-ABL1 fusion.

Article Synopsis
  • * Results show that 21.6% of patients with PA have diabetes, significantly higher than the general population's 12.1%, with suspected subclinical hypercortisolism (SH) being a major factor contributing to diabetes.
  • * The research also indicates that while bilateral PA has higher rates of prediabetes compared to unilateral PA, PA laterality does not affect diabetes prevalence, hinting at distinct metabolic mechanisms in different types of PA.
