Purpose: Workforce shortages are observed in many sectors of the economy, including clinical genomics laboratories. Although medical technologists are essential for the primary functions of laboratory operations and many institutions in the United States have reported acute staff shortages, we are unaware of any recent studies that provide concrete data detailing workforce needs. In this report, we summarize the results of a technologist-based survey sent to clinical laboratory directors across the United States.

: Preoperative patient evaluation and optimization in a preoperative evaluation center (PEC) has been shown to improve operating room (OR) efficiency and patient care. However, performing preoperative evaluation on all patients scheduled for surgery or procedure would be time- and resource-consuming. Therefore, appropriate patient selection for evaluation at PECs is one aspect of improving PEC efficiency.

Background: Although treatments have been proposed for calcinosis cutis (CC) in patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc), a standardized and validated method for CC burden quantification is necessary to enable valid clinical trials. We tested the hypothesis that computer vision applied to dual-energy computed tomography (DECT) finger images is a useful approach for precise and accurate CC quantification in SSc patients.
Methods: De-identified 2-dimensional (2D) DECT images from SSc patients with clinically evident lesser finger CC lesions were obtained.

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is one of the most common and effective treatments for substance use disorders (SUD); however, effective delivery of CBT depends on a wide variety of nuanced skills that require practice to master. We created a computer-based simulation training system to support the development of necessary skills for student trainees to be able to apply CBT effectively for clients with SUDs. CBT: Introducing Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is an interactive, role-play simulation that provides opportunities for clinician trainees to hone their skills through repeated practice and real-time feedback before application in a clinical setting.

This consensus statement presents a comprehensive and evidence-based set of guidelines for the care of postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) in both adult and pediatric populations. The guidelines are established by an international panel of experts under the auspices of the American Society of Enhanced Recovery and Society for Ambulatory Anesthesia based on a comprehensive search and review of literature up to September 2019. The guidelines provide recommendation on identifying high-risk patients, managing baseline PONV risks, choices for prophylaxis, and rescue treatment of PONV as well as recommendations for the institutional implementation of a PONV protocol.

Diversion in the workplace can adversely impact the safety of healthcare professionals and patients. The Anesthesia Patient Safety Foundation (APSF) believes that substance use disorder, diversion in the workplace, and their potential adverse effects on patient safety need to be addressed through open discussion, education, research, policy, and possible other interventions. To make progress in this area, the APSF convened a conference entitled "Drug Diversion in the Anesthesia Profession: How Can APSF Help Everyone Be Safe?" in Phoenix, Arizona, on September 7, 2017 (Supplemental Digital Content, Document, http://links.

Objectives Innovative mental health care delivery models have been proposed as a method to address disparities in access and utilization. The aim of this study is to characterize patients' perspectives and experiences of participating in one such innovative delivery model, group cognitive behavioral therapy within a supermarket setting. Methods In this qualitative study, 16 mothers were interviewed to explore their experiences and perspectives of receiving group-based cognitive behavioral therapy in a supermarket setting, as part of their participation in an academic-community research collaborative whose mission is to address mental health needs within low-resourced communities.

The definition of acute-on-chronic liver failure (ACLF) remains contested. In Europe and North America, the term is generally applied according to the European Association for the Study of the Liver-Chronic Liver Failure (EASL-CLIF) Consortium guidelines, which defines this condition as a syndrome that develops in patients with cirrhosis and is characterized by acute decompensation, organ failure and high short-term mortality. One-third of patients who are hospitalized for acute decompensation present with ACLF at admission or develop the syndrome during hospitalization.

Up to half of all postmenopausal women will experience changes in the genitourinary tract induced by the hypoestrogenic state, collectively known as vaginal atrophy. Several LET formulations are available, and choice of therapy is based largely on patient needs and preferences.
